Thoughts on this most recent episode, guys?
|
I actually thought that it was pretty good. It felt like Doctor Who. Like proper Doctor Who, which is something that has been missing for a while.
|
I so wish I had BBC America.
|
I don't have it either Kirin. I watch on the BBC website.
|
The two "big reveals" (Missy's identity and the other enemy) I had guessed already... however the smaller details and interactions of the episode were very enjoyable. I liked it and am greatly anticipating the final episode.

Psh, I just watch it illegally online. [ninja]
I had seen some people speculate about Missy's identity and my reaction was "yeah no." I was pretty surprised that it turned out to be true! It explains her, ah, eccentric behavior, though. As for the enemy reveal, weren't they in the previews from last week? It's a little bumpy, but I'm enjoying this season. I really love Capaldi as the Doctor, and I'm guessing he's having a lot of influence behind the scenes. It's feeling more like the Doctor Who I love. [:)] I still won't be completely happy until Moffat is gone, but at least I can watch now! [lol] |
Some things (like the way the Doctor talks to Clara) are still really making me wince, but I'm mostly enjoying this season as well.

Bearzy is in new zealand though, right? If it's on iPlayer, it will work there, but not in the US.

Hey people going to bed, just posting so I can find this tomorrow, G'night.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention *makes a very decisive mental note*

It's like a vaguely illegal way of doing things legally?? It's a confusing situation.

I felt like this episode was the best one for... a good while.

But 12 keeps making very specific, personal digs at Clara's appearance, calling her fat, commenting on her appearance in negative ways without any back and forth. If she gave as good as he did, then I would be less annoyed. But she doesn't. She just... takes it. Like "yes he has every right to comment on my appearance like that". It's also the fact he comments on how she looks at least once an episode, not just when she changes into a period appropriate costume or her appearance is otherwise noteworthy (just woke up, drenched, etc. etc.). It places a weird amount of importance on Clara's looks. As if they were relevant to the narrative, when they usually aren't. I ranted, sorry. |

Good points. 11 was pretty mean in his first season, though. But I don't think it was nearly as targeted or, well, misogynistic.
|
Yeah I spent season 5 sulking because it wasn't David Tennant so I must have missed it. This is what I get for marathoning seasons 2-7 in a month.

Season 5 is probably among Moffat's most watchable, but there are a lot of omens of what's to come in it (many of which I only see in hindsight).
First one being, like I said, the Doctor being downright mean to Amy at times. I don't recall too many specifics at the moment (just many times in which I was cringing and uncomfortable), but I do remember one time in which Amy made some negligible error out of good intentions and the Doctor flipped his shit and started going on about how he was taking her home and she wasn't to travel with him anymore. Second being how Amy treated Rory, which was a long-standing problem for me, in addition to that really uncomfortable love triangle they tried to play for... well, Amy's entire time on the show. Except here she and Rory aren't even married - she's just dragging around with her and her Space Boyfriend, making fun of him and generally... forgetting about him. Right up until she literally actually forgets about him when he's written out of history because he's the ultimate Buttmonkey of the show. And of course he returns to be the extremely self-sacrificing Centurion who really just needs to love himself and move on, this isn't healthy, c'mon, bro. It's a fun season but ugh, Moffat. |
I recall the Christmas episode, ... (Was it the Christmas special? I forget now..) where he's working with the Silurian detective and the Sontauran that serves in a butler kind of fashion..
The Sontauran expressed a thought as to how he thought something should work, and the Doctor says, "I'm the clever one, and you're the potato one." Pretty mean, I'd say. Shooting down someone else's thoughts in such a derogatory fashion for no good reason. I really didn't like him in that moment, and felt so bad for the Sontauran. |
I don't see why you couldnt both be clever and potatoey. He's really limiting himself there.
|
I've had to rationalize Eleven's behavior as a kind of regressive, petulant, childish stage in his personal development, brought on by the grief of everything and everyone he lost as Nine and Ten. I still did not like his behavior at all, but viewing it that way at least made it bearable.
|
My favorite Doctor is Four.
|
That's certainly one way to look at it, Chex. Unfortunately, I don't think it was intended that way. [:(] Or else it would have been portrayed as more of a "dark and troubled" thing (see nine's anger) rather than played for laughs ("you're the potato one.")
