yea? are there any other neat tricks you've learned?

Bearzy 01-05-2016 03:47 AM

OK so:
Never eat less than an hour before bed, but always make sure you aren't hungry at that point.
Stop drinking anything caffeinated a minimum of four hours before you need to be asleep.
Develop a consistent time of night to go to bed and to wake up - even in the weekends. Force yourself to do this for a couple of weeks and it will just start happening.
Don't spend time under a blanket unless you're going to sleep.
And develop a night time routine like "every day before bed I shower, make a cup of peppermint tea and sit in the dark for twenty minutes before I turn on my white noise and go to sleep" <- that's my actual routine.

There are other things as well but these are the easiest ones to do consistently. Other stuff is harder.

Linnea 01-05-2016 04:30 AM

those all seem like pretty doable things. the hardest part would be the waking up early on days i don't have to work lol i have no will power about sleep of food. those are two of my favorite things! i think perhaps i'll try some of these methods.

would you mind sharing one or two of the harder things? like is it just you find that you don't want to do it? i'm very curious now

Bearzy 01-05-2016 04:44 AM

So the harder things are really just things I don't like doing like not spending any time in or on a bed unless you're sleeping, keeping a clean room, doing regular exercise, cutting down on sugar. Things that take concentrated effort on my part. And I've found that the things I listed are enough to keep me going so I don't do the rest unless I'm having a really hard time of it, which can happen when I get stressed out about something.

Linnea 01-05-2016 04:50 AM

ah i see, yea that's a huge lifestyle change. i'm glad you are able to still make it work with the less extreme and less misery making routines [yes]

Bearzy 01-05-2016 04:57 AM

I mean, I still have cut down on sugar, and I have a pretty active job, but I'm a student, and student housing isn't exactly the most comfortable. I don't even know if the house I'll be living in this year has a couch so bed is about the only place to sit. And keeping a non-cluttered habitat takes more time than I've got, really.
But thanks, and I hope this stuff helps you too.

Haha hello!

The_Crow 01-06-2016 01:55 AM

I'm in a group callled "Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for people with Sleep Disorders". I've been tracking my sleep for five weeks. Everyone is a little different, and my sleep has become a little less scattered and more grouped, but I'm still not able to reliably function in the AM hours which is a huge barrier to me doing stuff in the "real world"... I can't even take AM appointments let alone actually drive or work then =/ I have to have white noise, avoid caffeine at night, and all that as well. What sucks is I often do need to lay down horizontally to aleviate some back pain and that often turns into an accidental nap that screws me up.

Bearzy 01-06-2016 02:49 AM

Oh do you have that sleep disorder that changes your pattern to be just a few hours out from normal - like a midday to 4 am function rather than a sunup to sundown function?

perhaps there is a place for one of those comfy round chairs or the butterfly ones. they both typically fold up for easy storage and that way you don't have to sit on your bed!
and thanks again. i am drinking tea as we speak... err as i type i mean, and i'm going to go and try to relax in the quiet with no technology a bit before attempting to sleep. you've inspired me!

And I like to spread myself out when I sit, I don't like seats much in general. If I could have a couch that would be great, and I wouldn't use my bed, but just a seat I find uncomfortable.

Well has it been good Kirin? Or are you too tired to be able to tell?

Linnea 01-06-2016 12:34 PM

hahaha i knew you'd get a kick out of that, bearzy :P

and i hear ya, that's why i often like to sit on the floor. although, i was doing that last night so that i wouldn't get too comfy while trying to read from my text book aaaaaand i fell asleep, face down in my book hahaha... for like almost two hours!

TaiyoTsuki 01-06-2016 07:54 PM

I've done that...granted not very often with textbooks, but other books (such as Harry Potter, Eragon, Lord of the Rings....).

Bearzy 01-07-2016 01:53 AM

You fell asleep? On the floor?? By Accident??? While reading???? This is not a thing that is even remotely possible for me.

Linnea 01-07-2016 02:13 AM

and apparently i was snoring a bit too, or so says my roommate. i usually don't snore, but i have in the past when i'm either sick or exhausted completely. i am making myself stay awake today/tonight and doing well so far! i didn't change into comfy clothes when i got home from work and i have been sitting in a not-so-comfy chair for my homework so i don't fall asleep in my book again hahaha i even played 'just dance' for a few songs to pep me up and keep me going. my goal is to stay up until 11 and that's in one more hour!

if the book is preferred and it's good, than i stay up late to read. my text book is on a somewhat dry subject sooooo i got so bored a passed out in it [oops]

Bearzy 01-07-2016 02:55 AM

I think I have only fallen asleep by accident once, and I was 13 and hadn't slept in nearly thirty hours. [lol]. Oh except the time I was sick and I slept for 14 hours but that occasion is an outlier and should not be counted.

Linnea 01-07-2016 03:39 AM

outlier eh? that's statistic talk! i like statistics [yes] anyways, i can't even imagine not sleeping for thirty hours. how much do you sleep a night on average?

Bearzy 01-07-2016 05:25 AM

Usually I can sleep six-eight hours. It's getting to sleep that's the issue, and I can function pretty well as long as I get more than 4. The longest I've been awake is around 50 hours?
