Where do you live?

My mom worked in an area that was close to the riot, so I was fairly freaked out because the media kept speculating that it would spill into her area. She and her co-workers were allowed to leave before that happened - but this was before everyone had cell phones. I basically had to wait by the phone at home to hear from her. Even now, I can remember how scary that whole week was, but think I can handle watching it now.

I recall that he doesn't work weekends, but figured that the shift still had an effect on him during the weekend. Still trying to figure out about socks to send via UPS to you. I don't have any ancient ones from when I was in the Navy. Not even a shoestring.

I'll accept scones, too. X3

It's a good thing you guys don't live here then, because the weather is sooo sporadic lately, he'd never get a good night's rest.

It went from four to five inches of snow and bitter wind and temperatures in the twenties and teens to a few days later being in the fifties, and then at the end of the week it was in the seventies.

It was seventy-three yesterday and today it's forty. And we had thunderstorms last night.

This weather is killing my joints. And it's fucking up Brandon's sleep schedule really badly, too.

Kierys 03-08-2009 06:40 PM

Sounds like typical Minnesota weather. Missouri gets it bad too, it looks like. Well, I gotta go to work. See you lovelies tonight, with any luck.

Elmira Swift 03-08-2009 06:47 PM

Hope you enjoy your day, Kierys!

Cricket - do you have problems with wheat also?

Insane Cricket 03-08-2009 06:50 PM

Oh, we get it really bad. Even in the summer time. There have been summers where it got below freezing at night. The news stations never report about it, but the thermometer in the back yard sure did.

The summer I met Brandon was so cool/cold that you had to wear a jacket. It felt like a mild winter. I remember wearing my coat most of the summer and being comfortable in it. Then come the end of July and it started to warm up. Got pretty hot, but not to the point that it was excruciating, just uncomfortable. The day I met Brandon I got the worst sunburn of my life. When my skin peeled off it was in flakes about a sixteenth of an inch or thicker.

I was also wearing a Pokemon shirt. ;;>.>...

Almost two years later there was an instance where it snowed in June. It was around the upper seventies, then suddenly it became a little chilly, though not uncomfortable. And snow started falling. Fluffy flakes of snow, and they melted instantly upon touching the ground. This lasted for about ten minutes or so.

We've also had temperatures in the fifties, sixties, and seventies, and the day afterward we get a huge ice storm that knocks out a lot of power and lasts for a week or two and then suddenly all of he snow and ice are gone and it's in the fifties, sixties, or seventies again.

Weather in Missouri is insane.

Elmira: Eh, yes and no. I've noticed that it's started to give me a runny nose, like milk and Heinz ketchup do. It's nothing bad, though.

Potatoes are starting to do that to me, too. At least from fast food and french fries that I don't make myself. Though maybe it's the oils they're made in instead. Corn chips are starting to bother me, too... >.<;; -Practically lives off of bread, potatoes, ketchup, and corn-

Just nothing with strawberries or bananas. They make my mouth itch. @[email protected]

We were actually in a tornado watch/warning when I woke up this morning.

I think most fast food places use canola oil, but I'm not sure. I can't eat a lot of fried foods because I had my gallbladder removed, but when oil is needed, I usually use olive, peanut or canola.

Used to have a good source for organically-grown, whole wheat pastry flour. I'll check to see what else they have. Wheat is good, but a lot of people of Northern European descent find it hard to tolerate.

Insane Cricket 03-08-2009 08:22 PM

See, I don't think they use canola oil, because I use that at home and the potatoes won't bother me, just the ketchup. (I'm only allergic to Heinz, but no other ketchup tastes as good to me so I continue eating it.)

I think they must add things other than just salt to their fries at McDonald's. The oil at McDonald's hurts my stomach, but there's something about Burger King's fries that's starting to make my nose run and cause drainage in the back of my throat. And I'm pretty sure they don't use canola oil, either.

Maybe their potatoes are boiled before cut into fries and fried... That might explain it. I never boil my potatoes before frying them, I cook from raw. It gives them this slightly sticky texture which I much more prefer over the softer (not to say that fried from raw isn't soft, but it's also a little sticky), non-sticky texture of the pre-boiled potatoes.

It might have something to do with starch or something.

Pasta has started giving me trouble, too. Which is one of the things that I live off of. I think because what I can stomach is so limited, I've badly overexposed myself to what I normally eat and I'm therefore becoming allergic to it.

It's a horrible idea, but I'm afraid it might be reality for me.

Elmira Swift 03-08-2009 08:30 PM

Have you looked into pastas made of other types of flour than wheat? I've seen some made of rice and even oat flour. Tried some Japanese noodles, Udon or buckwheat I think, but the preparation for them is a pain. I've tried variations on macrobiotic diets - I like meat and the diet is totally vegan - but some of the components are expensive because they're either made in limited quantities in the US and available through internet/mail order or you have to find a supplier in Japan. Must say that when I even do a modified version of it, I feel better. Rested, more energy, fewer stomach problems and skin irritations.

I spoke with a friend who is a doctor of Oriental medicine, and he is skeptical about the diet as a whole - sees it as a fad - but can see benefits to adopting some of the foods and recipes. I also went onto this whole foods kick ages ago and have some recipes left over. My nephew has allergies gluten, so I will ask my sister what she uses as a substitute. I developed an allergy to strawberries. Mangoes and some other fruits bother me at times as well.

Saelia 03-08-2009 09:03 PM

Hello thread. Are we talking about allergies? Fortunately for me, I've never come across anything I was allergic too. I got pretty lucky, I guess, lol.

Actually, when I was on the stomach medication, pasta didn't bother me at all. But off of it again, and it does. So I think it might just be my stomach hating me.

Psychotic Cricket 03-08-2009 11:47 PM

Almost all restaurants use corn oil when frying things which is why people with corn allergies can't really eat out anywhere. Same with wheat allergies since most everything contains wheat.

As for french fries and McDonalds. They fry them in either canola or corn oil, salt and there is also some sort of preservative. If you ever saw Super Size me you'll know what I'm talking about. French fries from there looked exactly the same after a month...

It could also be the oil itself, not what it's made out of and all. Just the fact that they fry EVERYTHING in that oil. So if you were having a problem with wheat like me you can't really even get french fries without having it contaminated with wheat because of things like chicken nuggets and so forth that are fried in it as well.

Anyway that was just my share on the topic since I have a lot of food allergies and intolerances.

Saelia 03-09-2009 12:04 AM

Well, we don't fry the chicken nuggets in the same vat / container / fryer of oil, in our restaurant. (I work in a McDonald's.) The fries are fried all by themselves in their own separate place. The other stuff, the chicken and fish patties, are fried elsewhere, and the beef patties are also grilled separately from all of them.

Right! So maybe it's not the oil in McDonald's fries, maybe it's the preservative. I totally forgot that they were covered in preservative crap. XD

Burger King fries actually get ugly after a day or two. I think they're safer to eat. XD Even though they're making the drainage in my throat worse.

Saelia: Well, our McDonald's doesn't fry stuff all in the same vats either. But that doesn't mean it's not the same kinda oil. Plus, McDonald's does use some really strong, possibly dangerous preservatives.

I once got McNuggets from McDonald's that I think had been circulating in and out of the fryer for about a month. They were tough as nails and disgusting!

Sorry to hear that. I know that makes things a little more interesting for you than you'd like.

Sae - That's interesting how everything is separated. I had no idea!

Saelia 03-09-2009 12:44 AM

Cricket: Oh, I never said it was not the same kind of oil. It probably all is. I was just explaining that most stuff isn't fried all together in the same place.

Also, we have to throw out our fries after they've been sitting for 7 minutes; that's the rule. So hopefully you'll never get french fries that are more than seven minutes old. Although I don't doubt that all McDonald's food is likely covered in preservatives. *shrug*

Elmira: Well now you do! xD

Oh yes, my stomach is just so incredibly interesting. :sarcasm:

Psh. I've had four hour old fries before. They're nasty. And that really does happen here, a lot. And in a lot of McDonald's.

Elmira Swift 03-09-2009 12:47 AM

See? I hang around on Menewsha and learn more about McDonald's - I love their fries. We don't add a lot of salt to the food at the house, so I feel like I'm going to OD on it when I have my fries. And, I mean that in a happy sense. :)

Insane Cricket 03-09-2009 12:52 AM

Speaking of salt... I've noticed that if I cut back on the salt in my diet and then I go in for my infusion, the saline they use to flush the blood from the IV after taking blood from me burns really badly.

But if I stick with the usual amount of salt, it barely burns at all. If I increase the salt in my diet (which I hate doing because it makes me a little jittery after a few days), it doesn't burn at all.

XD

Cricket is a freak.

Saelia 03-09-2009 01:46 AM

My brother eats tons of salt... He'll stand there with the salt-shaker over his popcorn, and pour it for a minute, look at his watch, and shake it for another minute. xD Practically all he eats is salt.

Anyway, 'tis dinner time now. Delicious spaghetti tonight! See you guys later.

Oxym0r0n 03-09-2009 03:29 AM

Hey everyone! Sorry I didn't meet my post requirement yesterday. I have a lot of trouble getting online on Friday and Saturdays because of my job. I got a few posts in though! That has to count for something eh? Haha, anyways... I'll be around now! How is everyone doing?

Saelia 03-09-2009 03:42 AM

Hey Oxy. ^^ I don't think anyone else is here, haha. Cricket could be around, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm doing pretty good. ^^ How're you?

Of course Cricket is here. Dur. He's always hopping around Menewsha if he's online! Though sometimes he's hopping slowly, but he's still there!

I'm on MSN, aren't I? That means I'm on Menewsha. X3

Saelia 03-09-2009 03:55 AM

Yes, I noticed you were still on MSN, so that's why I didn't completely rule out the possibility that you could be hopping around here. xD (Nice ninja/secret agent moves, there.)

Kierys 03-09-2009 04:06 AM

Michael can't eat a lot of salt, because of his heart condition. And I try not to eat stuff with lots of salt. I can't stand McDonald's fries for that reason. Waaaaay too much salt. And the people who run the places let soooo much stuff go on that shouldn't. Their work code is incredibly lax. Ewww. I don't like eating out unless it's at a fancier place, like Applebees. Mmmm, delicious steak with grilled asparagus. I'm craving some green veggies now. They are supposed to be good for iron.
