The calico ears pivoted softly toward the new sound of speech, and then back up at the man who brought her in, before she coughed quietly, "Thank you..."
She tried to sit up, wincing a bit and realizing it was a bad idea, "I think I'm bleeding... I'm scared..." she whimpered quietly. |
Ian nodded and did as he was told, going down the hall and to the door. He came back with the items, holding them stacked across his forearms. “Where do you want them?”
"Here," he said, reaching up and taking one of the pillows from the boy and slipping it behind the injured woman. "Being scared is a perfectly natural reaction..." he told the woman quietly. Athena emerged from the hallway, followed a by a man with brown hair and emerald eyes.
He crouched down beside the injured woman, looking her over. "Your wounds will have to be cleaned and treated," he told her, though she should know it was the obvious. "But we need to stop the bleeding first." |
The woman looked at the young man, then at the one who brought her in, before hr eyes moved to the one she guessed must be Itami, "Alright... I'm not sure if I can get my coat off..." She tried again to push herself up, taking a deep breath and barely managing to get herself upright.
Ian began to feel dizzy, staggering a bit. He shook his head and knelt down, setting the blankets and things on the floor. “I’m sorry, but is there any place I can rest?” he asked hopefully, feeling pretty exhausted.
"I'll help you," Magnus told her, gently easing her coat off.
Athena looked at the boy and nodded, stepping behind the bar to grab a key, then headed back to the dark hallway. "Of course, right this way," she told Ian, leading him towards the stairs. |
Ian got himself to his feet, following the woman down the hall and to the stairs. “Thanks,” he said. Once he was shown his room, he flopped on the bed and fell asleep.
She winced and nodded gratefully, finally pulling back the bloody sleeve of her sweater to reveal a sizeable gash on one of her forearms. The cut was accompanied by a few burns and bruises as well, quietly attesting to what the rest of her tiny body might look like, "What could have caused this?..." She paled, staring at the blood on her arm. It was horrifying, but she couldn't pull her eyes away, and instead just sat there trembling.
"Any number of things," Itami replied, opening up his medicine case and pulling two trays to reveal the deeper bottom. Taking out a brown glass bottle and a linen cloth, he dabbed some of the dark liquid onto the cloth and took her arm. "This is going to burn, but it will help ward off infection," he told her.
She whimpered, then nodded, coughing quietly. Her throat was sore from what she could only assume was smoke inhalation. Preparing herself for the medication, she looked at the man with the medicines, "Do you think it's all going to scar?"
"Most wounds like this do, but if I treat it properly and mix a few extra balms to put on your burns, scarring should be minimal." He wiped the cloth over her burns, putting down a fair amount of pressure to make sure he removed any loose skin and debris from the wounds.
She gasped then squeaked quietly, folding back her ears and failing in her effort not to cry. It was an effort to even breathe properly. The small woman's singed and once fluffy tail wrapped up in front of her as she tried to think of anything other than how much this all hurt.
"Shh..." Magnus gave her a gentle, reassuring squeeze of her upper arms. "You'll be okay. What's your name?"
Itami finished cleaning that arm and dabbed it dry with another piece of linen, then began applying a cream, very gently massaging it into her entire arm. "This will help with the pain, it'll make your arm go numb for a few hours." |
She whimpered, the pressure on her arm hurting a little as well, but the arm Itami was working on was enough to drown that one out, "T-..Tobias..." She sniffled quietly, then raised her head slightly to glance back, "What's yours? I... I don't know any of your names, really, I guess..."
"My name is Magnus, and the man tending to you is Itami." He glanced at Itami's hands for a moment, then smiled gently at her. "You gave us quite the start. Do you know where you come from?"
Itami had finished with the medication and was now wrapping Tobias' arm in bandages. |
She glanced over at Itami wrapping the bandages, breathing a few quick deep breaths, as if she might cry again, before turning back to Magnus, "No... I'm sorry I don't... I just know my name, really... I don't even know anyone at all... I don't remember anything..."
Itami moved over to her other side, beginning to treat that arm as he had the first. Magnus scooted over to one side to stay out of the way, but to still remain close to Tobias.
"Well, you know two people now," he told her. "Me and Itami." |
Tobias pulled her numbing arm to her and nodded, inhaling sharply as Itami started work on her other arm, which was blessedly less damaged than the first. She kept her tail close, though, even though it smelled of singed fur and smoke, "I wish it were under better circumstances, though..."
After having treated and dressed all of Tobias' wounds and making her drink some water, Itami turned her are over to Magnus. Collecting all of the soiled linens, Itami took his leave back to his bedroom.
Magnus carried Tobias up to the second floor and laid her in a bed, placing the key to the room on the nightstand. Leaving the room, he went into the residents' kitchen on that floor and retrieved a lightweight but clear plastic pitcher, filling it with ice water, and a glass, then took them back to Tobias' room. "You have to stay hydrated, you lost a lot of blood and you have a lot of burns." He put filled the glass with ice water then sat it and the pitcher down on the nightstand. "If you wake up, be sure to drink as much as you can. If you need me, my room is the last door on the left before the bar when you're coming from down the hall. I'll have Athena come check on you in the morning." |
Tobias perked her ears softly, managing a small smile, "Thank you... " She sighed quietly, already feeling tired from everything, "I'm really lucky I turned up where I did, I guess... Otherwise I don't know... I'm not sure whether I'd have made it or not... Thank you for everything..." She lay her head down, blinking up at Magnus for a moment, before sleep decided to overtake the exhausted woman and she drifted away.
He smiled a little smile at her, then went to the door. "Sleep well," he said quietly, pulling the door closed behind him. Once in the hallway he sighed and stood there a moment, before heading back downstairs to see if Athena had left any cake for him in the kitchen.
Romeo woke up. He didn't even remember when he fell asleep. But his boots were off and his jacket was laying on top of them in the corner of the room. He stretched and yawned. He hadn't felt this refreshed in a long time. He rubbed his eyes and got the rest of his clothes back on before heading out the door and into the main room. He dropped to the floor and did ten military style push-ups before stretching out his legs and shaking his long, untamed ebony hair around his face. He looked around to see if anyone was awake.
The bar was silent. If anyone was in fact awake, they weren't outside of their rooms. Except Gavin. Gavin had woken up about an hour previous and had gone down to the first floor library again. He'd left the door to the otherwise hidden hallway open, allowing light to stream out into the bar from the rooms the hallway led to.
Gavin laid on a large couch in the lounge by the fireplace near the drape-covered glass doors that opened up to the patio. There were several piles of books all around him, and his nose was currently buried in an impressively thick reference book. |
Romeo, intrigued by the light, followed the path like a child on a quest to discover something new. He peeked in the doorway and noticed a man laying on a couch surrounded by books. Romeo's breath caught and then he mentally slapped himself. He repeated the words this is not my Juliet, don't fall in love at first sight over and over again and walked smootly to the first set of bookshelves. He looked over the rows and rows of books and started to become a little overwhelmed.
"So I saw you here yesterday when I showed up with a lot of books in your arms. It seems you read enough to know what's good. Do you have any recomendations? There are so many choises I'm starting to feel a little dizzy just looking at them." |
"You should see the upper floors," he said quietly, blinking and turning the page. "Each library is bigger than the last, and the seventh floor is a giant maze of books. I'd recommend anything here, to be honest. Though there are books in strange languages that I don't recognize. So anything in English really..."
