that has actually happened to me in real life. i was at work and i though this woman was a man because her voice was so deep and then i noticed she has breasts! i never felt so bad.

on a website though... i thought jeanie was a male avatar.... and i was totally wrong! it surprised the hell out of me. lol. but she forgave me. and now were friends! ^.^

I do that all the time. I'm really bad at telling if somebody is a girl or a boy by the way they write, so I just call them by their avatar gender unless they say otherwise, or say something on their profile or in their signature.

And I am a girl. :]

Ehheh, I've done that before (on both ends). Its fun being the opposite sex and letting ppeople assume....and well I've a personality that can make it seem like I'm a guy. XXDDD But yes, I find it stranger when the person who is purposely using an avatar of the opposite sex get offended by the mistake. Its like, really? You set the person up for the mistake, and then you get ad? Maybe people just like conflict.

I haven't had it happen to me (.... yet) but I did have a friend of mine mistake a boy for a girl. XD;; I thought that He was a She to at first. We felt so bad when we found out our mistake.

the other way around actually. but then on other avi sites i prefer to have male avis. XD girls on gaia always send me random "you're cute will you be my online boyfriend?" pms.

Well, I don't like to assume gender by avatars...especially since I've been called "he" or "him" by various people on here, despite actually having a female base avatar...XD;;;

Granted, I'll admit I look pretty masculine. I'm trying to dress my avatar in the closest thing I can find to my own stage clothes. Yet despite being the main "male" presence of my band (we're all girls by the way), I am...well, amused, yet annoyed when people mistake me for actually being a man.

Though I have had a few surprises. Usually when someone has a male avatar, I'll admit I do at first think they're male...since usually the gender-benders have female avatars, as female items tend to look better and have more variety on most avatar sites. But as I said, I really prefer not to assume. I start using gender pronouns before I know someone's true gender, and I do start mentally kicking myself.

Maybe I'm just weird. :sweat:

I think that unless you're looking at a someone's profile and they indicate their gender, it's really difficult to assume that they're anything but male or female based on what their avatar looks like. I usually keep my main as my gender (female) and my mule as a male so I can collect items for both genders. I also usually make it pretty clear that I'm female.

Voices over the phone frequently mess me up. When I worked in customer service, it was always a shock to find out that someone I thought was male/female was the opposite. That got a bit embarrassing at times!

I always go by the gender of the avatar they use unless they have stated differently in their signature. I cannot read minds and no one should be upset by the confusion they cause when they use an avatar that does not portray their real gender and give no hint to their real gender.

I make assumptions all the time.
Hence my signature.

I generally assume that the ava's gender and the person's gender are the same, mostly because I see online avatars as being extensions/representations of myself, so I usually think that they're doing what I'm doing: Making an avatar that mirrors their gender. I am a lady myself, by the way.

I'm new to these avatar sites. I've noticed that there are quite a few "genderless" avis... probably on purpose.

Um, that has not happened to me before. xD I'm a guy by the way. Whenever I talk to someone their gender or sex is the same as their avatar.

There was the one person on Gaia who I remember vaguely from a forum. He was completely covered in a bunch of stuff like a chicken mask, gloves, everywhere was covered. There was no skin showing. And on his profile there weren't any hints about his gender either but he was willing to pay people who guessed his gender right. Send him a PM and if you were right he'd give you either an item or gold. If you were wrong though he wouldn't even reply and you'd totally forget about the whole thing...I never guessed so I don't know what gender he was....

lol I alwasy assume people are the gender of their avatar, but then there are so many people that have an avatar of the opposite sex, and I just end up really confused. >_<

@ Thoth - I think it's the face that is the tricky part. Looks feminine.

Until today, I thought that Mr. Mayor's avatar was female because of his eyebrows and ponytail (the cravat concealed any possible breastage, so I couldn't get a good look at his chest), but I fail at gender identification. I thought he and Viktoria Valentine were lesbians after reading the thread made by him in the memorable thread section, which I found both very sweet and progressive of Menewsha.

I hope that Mr. Mayor isn't offended. :sweat:

XD there are female gender benders. just not as many of us as guys for some reason.
