I don't think I've ever actually referred to anyone by the wrong gender, but yeah, sometimes I do think someone is the opposite and then find out that they're not that.

I equate bad reactions to people with hard to pronounce or spell names who go into fits when people mispell or mispronounce their names. Especially in something like an online game where you choose your own name, not like your parents chose it for you. Like, once I was in a party with a guy whose character was named "Fng". Someone called him "Fang" and he went absolutely berserk, not to mention acting like the other person was retarded. I mean, come on. You'd have to expect being called "Fang" now and then ...

For the record in RL I have a name, though easy to spell and pronounce, that is ethnic and people make difficult all the time. I don't really care what people call me as long as it's close. I mean I want it spelled correctly on official forms and prescriptions but outside of that ...

People I find usually do it on purpose.
This is a newer account,
but I have a male on another avatar community site.

Sometimes it's just fun to get to try on their items.

But I generally stay true to me being female.

Jack MacGaven 01-05-2009 06:12 PM

hahaha!
Yeah, people assume I'm a guy, but in reality I'm a girl.
But I don't mind it much really.
My OC represents me on Avatar sites. I like it better that way.

Liath 01-05-2009 07:32 PM

That's random. I try to avoid the dilemma usually by saying "dude" for everyone. Instead of "that guy" or "that girl" it's "that dude." Doesn't always work, though. 'cuz if you're saying something like "her last post said..." it's kinda weird to say 'that dude's last post," etc, etc.

Mystic 01-05-2009 07:45 PM

Yeah, I've done that a few times. I guess that's the nice thinga bout avatar sites though. You don't have to let people know who you are unless you want to.

YOU HAVE A GIRL AVATAR? xD !! I always though you had a guy avatar thothy D;

I don't understand why people have guy avatars and they are girls and vice versa D: i've mistaken people multiple times.. but not thothy XD

27UndeadMen 01-05-2009 08:40 PM

xD Yes! There was a male avi in a thread I was in and the person behind it was a girl. I was very confused for awhile o.O

Opera Phantomess 01-05-2009 09:44 PM

You can never tell by an avatar unless the person states somewhere else. I make the mistake myself, but not within posts. If I am confused, I will usually use their username until I know for sure. I have made the mistake in posts on non-avatar sites, though, and usually kick myself for not asking or something. xD

Yeah 01-05-2009 10:02 PM

I've never had that happen to me but, I see a lot of people who have avi's the opposite gender from what the person actually is. I don't get it but, to each his own I guess.

`Kitami 01-06-2009 06:46 AM

Rofl...
Yeah.
When I first met my boyfriend, he had a female avatar.
SO I thought he was a girl in real life as well. 8D

BUT I had a crush on him anyway. >_>
And then I found out he was a guy and I was like "Score! 8D"

;<_<
Yeah.

Anyway, no-one's ever mistaken me for the opposite sex, online, that I know of. I'm typically very girly. XD

Mysteria 01-06-2009 06:59 AM

Cant say this has happened to me *knock on wood*
But I will admit that I have a difficult time telling the difference between male and female characters here on Mene. I dont seem to have that problem on Gaia unless the avi is so cluttered I cannot see the face or body shape. :) Oh, and if I ever do assume the wrong gender here, I apologize in advance. hehe! ;)

Nissa 01-06-2009 02:15 PM

Back when I would go on gaia I had a male avatar. I just went along with it most of the time. I only corrected one or two people the entire time I was there. I think it's probably pretty common for people to use different gendered avatars. You get shock value and you also get a larger sense of escaping reality.

kchan09212 01-06-2009 02:20 PM

Ya...I've had that happen to me on Gaia one too many times. Sometimes it's really hard to tell some male avatar's gender /sweatdrop

Sofa King Carlie 01-07-2009 04:22 PM

That seems to happen to me all the time lately.. it confuses me :sarcasm:

stormiie 01-07-2009 04:53 PM

I haven't really done that.
I have started to talk to a person and started to like them for what there avi looked like and such and then I look at a picture and get life shock because people don't look like there avis at any time.

Michy Lea 01-07-2009 07:09 PM

I've done that when they don't state their true gender in their signature. I don't feel bad about it. They're the ones who are misrepresenting their gender, so they can't be mad when I go by the avatar's gender. How am I supposed to know differently?

Azelf_Rampardos 01-07-2009 07:38 PM

Yup, it has happened. It's really awkward when those kinds of situations happen lol.

Protagonist 01-07-2009 08:17 PM

yes D:
you did that to me nikki D:

Clorissa 01-09-2009 04:18 PM

I've done that so many times x3.
lol, I'm terrible about it.

Ayme 01-09-2009 08:56 PM

I usually don't have a problem with mistaking people's genders, but I usually stick to using a person's screenname anyway. >_> Since I usually go by versions of ladychimera on the sites I'm on I usually don't have problems of people mistaking my own gender. xD

d2hiriyuu 01-09-2009 09:11 PM

people do that to me alot, I don't bother to correct them though, i am whatever gender people want to talk to me as.

Sadistix_Love 01-09-2009 10:56 PM

Yea, I know that feeling! Well, I usually don't mind if the person is a girl using a guy's avatar but vice versa makes me feel weird. That's why I hate to roleplay with people who has an avatar that is opposite gender of the role they are playing.

DJ Mango 01-10-2009 05:31 PM

Sometimes they don't even tell you what they are.
o__o

Jeannesha 01-10-2009 07:04 PM

How often does a person's avi actually look like they do?

(not too many people have those big anime eyes...)

I quite often mistake the gender.

Personally, I stay female. Back when many of the games didn't have female characters I would play male, but I've preferred to stay female.

xSzayel Granz 01-10-2009 09:23 PM

It happens to me on Xbox Live, ALOT!
It's immensly hard telling the difference between a 16 year old girl and a 10 year old boy, thanks to the damn horrible microphones we all use.

I generally have to rely on what words they use.
