It's a wonderful place, it's a nonprofit organization for women. It started for adults, so women had a place to express themselves with words, but since then it's expanded so it has classes for teen girls, younger girls, and adult men. They're working on getting this together for younger men as well, but thus far have only women volunteering to run those classes, and they would like for a man to.

Everybody feels they have the "next best novel" inside of them just waiting to emerge. `laughs` The rest of us are content with little chats.

Iltu 04-18-2009 06:31 PM

Haha, many of us do fell that way, I fear. XD I myself lost that feeling in fifth grade, when I finally realized I simply can't finish anything I try to write. :P That doesn't stop me from trying, though, or from liking to write short stories. ^^

Do you write at all, Granny?

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 06:36 PM

Very little.

I dearly love to read good writing. My favorite author is Jane Austen. I just love the way she uses the language.

I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do well, so I don't try.

Another favorite is actually Stephen King. He is a master at character generation. He makes you *feel* his characters. And then he kills them off.

Iltu 04-18-2009 06:40 PM

Oh yes, I prefer readin to writing any day! I have yet to read any Jane Austen, but I am taking a women in literature class next year, and will be reading some of her novels for that. ^^

I need to read more Stephen King, heavens! I started Cujo, but then my mom decided she wanted to read it, and took it. And by the time she was done, I had to take it back to the libarary! I do plan to read Lissey's Story soon, though. Have you read either of those?

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 06:53 PM

Yes, I've read them both. Lissa's story is very moving in many ways.

My favorite Stephen King is "The Stand".
It is his absolute best novel.

fairywaif 04-18-2009 06:57 PM

I'm actually working on a new story now! It's about a girl who can control temperatures. It's pretty cool.

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 07:02 PM

You've changed outfits, fairy! Very nice.

Have you written many things?

Iltu 04-18-2009 07:10 PM

Granny- It's one of my friend's favorite book. I decided I had to read it because of that! Even though she hates my favorite book, which she's only read several pages of. *sigh*

The Stand? I will look for that one!

Fairy- That sounds interesting!

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 07:12 PM

As for Jane Austen - I love every one of her books.

Of course, Pride and Prejudice is the one everybody thinks of, but in college we read Emma first.

Sense and Sensibility is very good also. The movie is very good too!

Iltu 04-18-2009 07:19 PM

I really want to read Pride and Prejudice sometime, moreso than any of her others! And I'd also like to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but that's not quite the same. :P *laughs*

I had a classmate do a report on Sense and Sensibility, she said it was very good!

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 07:22 PM

Emma Thompson is a lovely actress. She does that time period so very well.
Hugh Grant is also very very good in the movie.

fairywaif 04-18-2009 08:13 PM

I have only finished one, but I need to completely revise it since I did it during NaNoWriMo. You have to do 50,000 words in a month.

Dream_and_Die 04-18-2009 08:17 PM

:pokes head in: I smelled talk of books. xD
I keep wanting to read P&P but I never get around to it. >>;

GrannyJ 04-18-2009 08:29 PM

It's a very entertaining read, and goes quite quickly.
Nobody can help falling in love with Mr. Darcy!

50,000 words is quite a bit, isn't it, fairy? About how many pages would that be? A short story, a novella, or a novel?

fairywaif 04-18-2009 11:50 PM

It'd be a novella I believe. It sounds like a lot, but some people get 75. I got 35-ish and realized I couldn't continue. It was too many pieces that needed to be tied together first.

GrannyJ 04-19-2009 12:00 AM

I think my problem with writing would be in showing conversations.
I wish I were as witty as many of the main characters in novels seem to be.

Cloudwalker 04-19-2009 12:04 AM

Hello everyone!
It seems like a lot of topics went through today.
So how is everyone doing?

GrannyJ 04-19-2009 12:11 AM

Hello, Cloud dear. We are very well.

Come in and make yourself comfortable! Have a nice cup of tea.

Cloudwalker 04-19-2009 12:19 AM

Thanks Granny
*scooches butt on floor into compfy position*
*takes cup of tea* *sips* Delicious!
So, what is everyone up to?

GrannyJ 04-19-2009 12:24 AM

Fairy is writing a novella.

Cloudwalker 04-19-2009 12:30 AM

*cringe* I'm am really bad at writing.

So, Fairy, what are you writing?
(sorry if you already gave this info, I didnt feel like rereading all the posts from today)

YuenGuon 04-19-2009 01:24 AM

hey guys! I was out all day.
Went to the doctor's.
[just blood work]
and i was in queens and Manhattan all day long.
I'll probably be writing some more of my paper tonight.

So what are we all talking about today?
If anyone is still around

GrannyJ 04-19-2009 01:28 AM

There are quite a few of us around, Yuen dear!
Welcome back.

<hands Yuen a nice cup of tea>

fairywaif 04-19-2009 04:02 AM

Well the thing I'm writing currently (I have trouble finishing things...) features a girl who can control temperatures. The villains are a guy made of shadows and a woman made of water. Or at least they draw power from those things. I haven't even gotten to 5 pages yet. If I get to 20 I will be very happy! I have three right now stuck at 10.
