Stop being so damn PC around me.

I just hate it. Ever since I... like... came out, people have been trying so hard to be PC around me to the point that it's just not PC anymore.

I mean seriously, I like guys. Big whoop. It doesn't bug me that you use gay as a synonym for stupid. Heck, I do it to, and I do it a lot. But yeah. I appreciate the effort, but yeah. Stop trying so hard.

It's like when someone uses the word gay as an insult around me, people would look liek someone died. o_o

Discussion:
Why do people feel the need to be so damn PC?
Do you want them to stop?
Are you one of the people who are in the minority, but hate it when people try to be TOO PC around you?

thoughtlessamaya 02-23-2009 01:51 PM

"PC"? I've never heard this term, it'd help if you could throw the definition of it out there..

tigerangel 02-23-2009 01:55 PM

Political correctness (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term applied to language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to gender, racial, cultural, disabled, aged or other identity groups. Conversely, the term "politically incorrect" is used to refer to language or ideas that may cause offense or that are unconstrained by orthodoxy.

I work with a boy who is openly gay. I be nothing but his friend in terms of his sexual orientation.
He's a great person and a lot of fun to work with.
What more could a girl ask for in a friend. :)

Alexandrus Gambino 02-23-2009 02:01 PM

I generally confuse people around me because of the concept of PC, because I constantly call things that I don't like "gay" or "faggy".

tigerangel 02-23-2009 02:06 PM

I could see how that might confuse people who do not know you a bit.

Alexandrus Gambino 02-23-2009 02:09 PM

I know. And it's probably the reason why I don't have a girlfriend or a boyfriend yet.

tigerangel 02-23-2009 02:10 PM

Well, I hope you find someone who will love and want you for who you are, rather than someone who will try and change you.

Alexandrus Gambino 02-23-2009 02:17 PM

Doubtless. Too bad I have a horrible IRL personality. Just ask Elsa.

jellysundae 02-23-2009 02:40 PM

People being excessively PC pisses me off no end. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably use terms like "gay" all the more just to make them uncomfortable xD

People need to get the sticks from out of their asses about stuff like this and get over themselves.

AllAnimeFreak 02-23-2009 02:43 PM

I'm bi, though most people here irl still think I'm gay.
(Thought I was for a while, long story. >.>;;)
And most people act the same way around me.
Generally the way I can break it is joke about it.
Like my friend Amanda and I use the word straight as a synonym for stupid, we'll go "Oh my god that was so straight."
Or "God, you're such a breeder"
And people realize that we just don't care, and loosen up a little bit.
Though I have to say, while "gay" used in situations where it means "stupid" is not that bad I really dislike use of the word "faggot" in any sense, and I do fuss at people for that.

Stardragon 02-23-2009 02:44 PM

You mean doubtful.I don't like it when they go to far with the Political Correctness.

tigerangel 02-23-2009 03:02 PM

I think you're being overly critical of yourself.
Elsa seems to enjoy the time you two spend together.

Sayhn 02-23-2009 03:12 PM

i do agree, it gets so annoying when people are too pc, but then i hate it when they have no sense of decency to watch what they way at all.

My father inlaw is like that. "gay" has become more of a slang term for stupid, and it doesnt bother me when used occassionally, but he uses it ALL the time to EVERYONE, calling everything he cant stand gaygaygaygay, and calls his son and other guys gay boy, fag and all sorts of other things, and it really gets old. I remember watching the amazing race with the two older women that were a couple, like a year ago, and he would not shut up about how disgusting it was, and gay and what not

No one else in the room had any problems AT ALL, he was just spouting off all on his own. And this lack of internal filter flows everywhere in his life, i dont think ive met a person that could be so offensive while trying to NICE, he will compliment you vaguely and then frame that with something that you suck at, or whatever

His unusual use of gay,fag and whatnot and then his anger towards real people is starting me make me think he is secretly gay lmao

amyrex2 02-23-2009 04:45 PM

Smiles, when your friends do this let them know it bothers you. When people you don't know do this try to be cool about it, after all they are only trying to be nice. Trust me it would be a lot worse if they went out of their way to be mean to you because of liking guys. This is one of those instances where you need to just take things in the spirit in which they were given, after a while, people will calm down and you can go back to just being someone at work.

PC is getting out of hand, but with out people going overboard about it a lot of other people wouldn't give a shit about what they were saying and to who.

As a strait white girl, I personally don't like things being called gay. It pisses me off that people use that term as an insult. If you are cool with it that is fine, but please don't use it around me. Because people are learning to not use the word around you, perhaps they will learn to not use it around me. Here is hoping, I have almost thrown people out of my home for their continuing use of it.

Don't even get me started on racial slurs....

Good luck, I am saddened that your being 'out' is an issue, but I truly believe that the more people come out, the more stereotypes will be crushed and then we won't need to be so PC as a country anymore.

juniper_silver 02-23-2009 04:57 PM

I don't like the word gay as an insult and I don't like the word fag at all. I don't use them that way, so I guess I'm one of those annoying politically correct people. I don't change my behavior just in front of people who are or aren't gay though, I can see how that could be annoying to someone who hates political correctness.

And I'm bi, if it matters, but I think I'd feel the same way about it if I were straight.

thoughtlessamaya 02-23-2009 05:28 PM

I'm not used to people saying PC instead of politically correct, my bad.

But yeah, I understand how that feels. Even if you wear certain clothes or hang with certain people, others treat you differently. Its ridiculous.
My brother got the same treatment when he came out of the closet.

Thoth Star 02-23-2009 05:49 PM

I dunno... I don't care about proper terminology. I'm bi but I still mutter under my breath "Fuck thats gay," when someone says something utterly retarded. I think it would be funny if people stopped saying 'gay' so much and started say, "Thats so les." lol.

What I've also notice is when another guy realizes your sexuality he gets that stricken look on his face. xD hilarious. I still bitch and moan about prop. 8 but every time I get shot down by my republican neighbors that are all "marriage this, marriage that." I think straight people's obsession with marriage stems from violent brainwashing...

Risque 02-23-2009 06:15 PM

Lol @ PC people.
I only choose to use the word gay and fag because they're one syllable words, and very easy to pronounce.

Tilly 02-23-2009 06:19 PM

Just be like, fuck you guys, I'm going over there. :/ Why would you tolerate that anyways? That'd piss me off.

If they're real friends, they won't give two shits. My friends don't care, and I mean they really don't care. Why would they? I've known them forever, they'd of known if I was interested by now. :/ They rip on me all the time, but I do it them too.

Idk, only old people are like that to me. But I'd rather that than getting like stoned to death or w/e

jellysundae 02-23-2009 06:42 PM

I think a lot of what Alex is talking about is people just being too uptight as well. It's not so much overly PC, as not knowing how to just be cool about his sexuality, so they get really self-conscious about what they say, then get embarrassed really easily when they accidently throw the G word into the conversation.

so offtopic

omg i want your sig -tummy rumbles-

Guivre 02-23-2009 07:57 PM

^^ (More off topic) Oh, thank god I got moo jello mold instead of something delicious that would drive me nuts for an hour.

@Alex, I don't think it'll take too long for people to get out of that phase. It's just awkward for now. Ye Olde Elephant in the room and then someone by mistake says "Jumbo". Doesn't even have to say "Elephant." But yeah, that would be as annoying as hell.

@Thoth, the marriage thing is really about making babies, which makes sense. Once you get past 30 you need to like go IVF or so it seems these days so it's like making hay while the sun shines.

Sayhn 02-23-2009 08:23 PM

Guiv: i got some amazing looking chocolate desert T_T it looked like a square of cake covered in chocolate with a little shaving of chocolate on top

Alexandrus Gambino 02-23-2009 11:45 PM

I've occasionally thrown around phraces like "Political Correctness is like... So gay." or "Homophobia is so gay" Which really makes sense in a freud sort of way.

Anyway, seriously. Bein PC is okay, but bein too PC is like... so not kosher.

Popcorn Gun 02-24-2009 01:41 AM

It took me a minute to get it, but I see, Pc= politically correct.
Yeah....Political correctness ruins half the fun jokes that go one between friends.
And sometimes it just gets ridiculous.

And yes, I'm a minority, I'm Black.
And I hate hearing people say, you know you should say "African American".
I used, but I've stopped.
I BELIEVE the point of racial identity, is for ME to define myself. And if I no longer feel African American is adequate, I'm going to say Black.
People can be so weird about that.
By Black, it means your roots (somewhere) as far back as you can trace go to Africa. African American can be anyone who moves to Africa, have kids there, and move to America or have children (3rd generation now) in America.
