Lolita - What's your opinion?

I happen to be in love with the Lolita lifestyle and fashion and just wanted to know, what is your opinion?
Do you think it's immature and basically begging for an unfortunate incident to happen?
Or do you think it's elegant and a very nice style?
If you like the style, do you have any lolita clothing?
What is your favorite brand of lolita clothing?

Edit:
Please do take note that Sweet Lolita and Gothic Lolita are not the only types of Lolita, as many people may think. There are many other forms of the style as said in the list here:

Begging for an unfortunaty incident? I am not sure what you mean there.
I personally love the clothing, but I most certainly don't have the money to be living like that! Though I do have a pair of real nice white lolita boots and a pink dress with lots of white lace-frills. :> I don't read about it or anything, so I have no idea what kind of brands there is since I ordered my clothing and stuff from ebay, custom-made. If you're able to, and you find the style is just YOU, then I think you should get in there and go totally lolita. :P

destructoPop 04-05-2009 07:00 PM

I'm slowly saving up for a lolita outfit right now. I've found several extremely cheap contributions (100 yd crinoline for $30! Big poofy detailed skirt to fit over... ONE PENNY!!) so I guess you could say I'm a fan. A pooooor fan. xD

Morbid 04-05-2009 07:03 PM

I ordered a dress from eBay too, but some of the brands are
Baby The Stars Shine Bright
Immortal World
and
BodyLine
And for the unfortunate incident, such as rape, or other such things down that alley. I know that several people have said I look like I'm begging to be raped when I walk around in such clothing where I live. ._.;
Edit:
Yes, it is very expensive. xD But I still love it and manage to drive myself to the point of no money with my obsession, same with BJD's but I don't have any of them. o3o

I figured she meant mixing sexy with child-like fashion is begging for a child molester's attention. Calling it Lolita is like waving a banner for the perv community even though most outfits I have seen involve a lot of skin coverage.

I think it can look really neat, I love elaborate costumes, but I have not tried it myself.

destructoPop 04-05-2009 07:08 PM

I'm more into the elaborate side than the sexy side. I've only been called sexy once when dressed loli, and that's because I hadn't donned the top yet and my boyfriend was in the room. lol

If anyone tells you you're begging to be raped, you might consider avoiding them. Apparently they have the wrong things in mind for you.

And brand name stuff is way too expensive for me... I've worn one BTSSB outfit that I borrowed, and it doesn't look that much more special than home-made or second-hand stuff. It's really more about the details, and proper accessorizing... So really you don't NEED to buy things for about a million moneys more than you can afford, yano?

Morbid 04-05-2009 07:14 PM

Ah yes, but it's hard to avoid them when you're related to them. xD
I don't really care for the sexy side of Lolita, I just enjoy how elements of a forgotten fashion are mixed with more modern fashion to make something so very beautiful as Lolita.
Yes, it is expensive, but I've found that most of my brand name clothing is better made and lasts longer as opposed to my other clothing.

Slytherclaw 04-05-2009 07:17 PM

Hmm. I like the Lolita style. I think it's very beautiful and elegant. I've never tried to wear it myself, since I don't have the body type to pull that sort of thing off, but I like seeing it, and I don't really see how it would lead to anything bad. It's cute.

I don't actually know any brands myself. If I were to try it myself, I'd probably end up looking for frilly things in regular stores and making what I could find, so it's never really been something I needed to know.

Well, that's the perverts problem, really. And it's just horrible when people say ''you're begging for rape'' or anything like that. Are we all supposed to wear a huge bag over our bodies just because some arseholes are swines enough to rape? No, you know what, you just plant a big hard kick with your big, chunky lolita-boots between their legs. D:

I do have to agree with you, but the way you phrased the last part made me laugh. xD

Well, I don't want this topic to become heavy and dramatic with rapists and stuff. XD Might as well take it lightly! :3

Ah, yes. xD
We wouldn't want that at all

Sho-Shonojo 04-05-2009 08:08 PM

I find the Lolita clothing really cute. If I had the chance to wear any of the clothes, I probably would. This is coming from a girl who despises dresses. Lolita clothing is just too pretty to turn down. If I ever strike rich, I'll definitely start buying some Lolita clothes.

The only brand I know is Baby the Stars Shine Bright. I liked a lot of the stuff I saw by them.

Twilight_Vampiress 04-05-2009 09:13 PM

I love Lolita fashion, I wear it very often. I think it's a very cute and elegant fashion, not immature in the least. I own some Lolita clothing but I'm still building up my wardrobe :D Some of the brand clothes is pretty expensive but for know I'm just sticking to buying off brand clothes. My favorite brand is Angelic Pretty <3

Um, just to be clear, I was saying what I thought she meant by "begging for an unfortunate incident." I wasn't in anyway condoning rape or saying that people shouldn't dress how ever they like. What I was saying is that sometimes the way we dress can attract both wanted and unwanted attention. When I see a 20 something girl in a lacy lolita outfit with thigh high stockings and lace up boots, I think "that outfit's hot." When I see a 12 year old in the same outfit, I'm sorry but I worry about the attention she may draw from the pervs of the world because she may not be able to defend herself if they tried to force themselves on her. I am relieved to see that most lolita girls travel in packs. I think cosplay and fashion in general can be an art form. Keep in mind where the word "Lolita" comes from.
(A movie about a 40 some year old perv having a love affair with a 14 year old girl, when it didn't work out with her alcoholic mother.) The Japanese culture jokes often in anime and manga about older men ogling high school girls, and fantasizing about seducing the little sister type, I think calling it that was a tongue in cheek comment on that.

~Prototipo-Annette~ 04-05-2009 09:42 PM

Lolita is one hundred percent adorable and very conservative too! It makes me somewhat mad when people thing it's "begging for an unfortunate incident", because as I see it, wearing a mini skirt is begging for something much worse! Lolita is an adorable neo-Victorian fashion based on children's clothes for the most part, but whether you look childish or not really depends on how the accessorize or what style you go for. Personally, I think Princess Lolita looks a bit childish, but Classic Lolita tends to look really mature. When it comes to the name, my opinion stands that Lolita means little girl in French, therefor the name of the fashion is very fitting. Just because one perv used the word as a name in his porn novel doesn't mean that the rest of the world should stop using it. That just gives more power to the perverts.

When it comes to favorite style of Lolita, I really really love Sailor Lolita because it's just that adorable. I'm not too into Gothic or Country Lolita, and don't really like them much, but I think Classic and Prince are adorable, even if I'm not a guy and should stick to female fashions. Wa and Qi Lolita's are my second favorites, though Qi beats out Wa anyday. Um... there really isn't any third place. Kuro and Shiro Lolita aren't for me, though, since I prefer bright vibrant colors. Very bright and vibrant colors. I don't mind a bit of Sweet Lolita, though.

On a final note, I would love to live the Lolita lifestyle, but I don't have the money. I'm saving right now for a dress, but my sister already has one and a skirt that she made herself. I don't really take interest in the Japanese brands, though, since my American self can't fit into the tiny waist sizes and awkward measurements. Instead, I buy from American manufactures online, Rakuen mainly. I dream of the day when I can wear Lolita as a daily fashion and attend tea parties on a regular basis, but I'm just too broke for that.

Edit: Oh yeah, and on the topic of Lolita-ish hairstyles, a hime cut would be totally awesome if only my hair was straight enough. If only! >.<

Morbid 04-05-2009 09:47 PM

I had my hair done in the hime-style for a while, then I grew out my bangs and now it's just. . . straight.
Shiro-loli is one of my favorites, so are Qi and Wa, but by far Elegant Gothic Aristocrat is my favorite.

Twilight_Vampiress 04-05-2009 10:09 PM

Hime-hair is adorable. I've been thinking about trying to get a hime-cut but I'm not sure how it would look x3

Panic 04-05-2009 10:29 PM

I love the fashion, but the complex is another thing all together. So it depends. I guess I go both ways. Little girls don't belong with older men, (and visa versa) But I don't see anything wrong with lace and ribbons! :)

Ashi 04-05-2009 10:46 PM

The lolita style soooo darn adorable! Careful guys, I'm one of those perverts who will steal you away if I catch you looking cute in that stuff! Every time I see people in that it makes me squeal! I just wanna steal them and take them home as little pets and feed them cake and stuff.

I realize I'm a huge dork. I personally can't wear that type of thing, it doesn't suit me at all which makes me really sad. :c

amyrex2 04-05-2009 11:22 PM

I have no desire to dress in that manner for myself, but it is fun to watch all the pretty young things dressed up like dolls. I like to dress up my avatars in Gothic Lolita manner, but never can seem to pull the look together as well as everyone else.

Ashi I agree totally with you, I used to know a gothie girl that would let me feed her cupcakes and never thought I wanted anything more than to see her eat a cupcake in her cute outfit. Saddly she fell out of my social group and I have not seen her in years.

Bikuu 04-05-2009 11:26 PM

I like it, but I can stand it on people that can't pull it off.

It's like cosplay to me. Only Asians and certain people can pull it off for it to appeal to me. xD

St_JimmyHavok 04-05-2009 11:29 PM

I think it's adorable but just not ALL THE TIME like I see some Lolitas. I think if you want to dress up and look adorable from time to time that's fine, but don't take it to extremes. Anime conventions and the like- by all means! Go all out! Outside of that though take social norms into consideration. Don't wear little frilly dresses to places you're going to be active, like a ballpark or the zoo. It's all about timing.

jupiter 04-06-2009 01:54 AM

I believe it can be healthy and charming at times.
For instance, someone who, like yourself, is fond of the new-age lolita genre and clothing, dressing up is fine.

Even for someone older, it can play into a fantasy that would lessen the probability of an unfortunate circumstance.

However, the idea that it's alright, socially, ethically, legally, and morally, for an older man to have a sexual relation with a young girl is absurd and abhorrent.

Quantum Angel 04-06-2009 02:22 AM

My honest opinion - it's SERIOUSLY overdone. Everyone and their grandmother seems to either have an interest in it and the clothing to match, no interest in it but the clothing anyway, or an interest in it but no clothing to match...and anyone who doesn't hates it because it's so popular.

Personally, I don't dislike it in the least - in fact, I love it to death when someone really pulls off the look well and has the attitude to match (like my sister for instance *coughhack*completelynotbiased*cough*). But the fact is, so few people actually DO.

Honestly, it gets on my nerves when I see so many dollar-store wannabe Lolita types walking around in some frilly skirt and a shirt that leaves little to the imagination. If you're going to do something, learn what it's really about first.

All in all, it's wonderful...until its sole purpose is as a sexual fantasy. When it's all in good fun, and you're doing it because you like it, great. When you're only doing it because it's what's "hot" and you want to attract someone who would otherwise be a child molester...that's when I have to say no.

That said, I actually do DESIGN some clothing in the EGL style. It's entirely for my sister; designs to be used mainly by my band for lives, videos, and whatnot. I personally don't wear such things (I'm the main "male" [technically gender-neutral, but people assume male first in this field] figure), but I do find the designs very fun to play with.
