Dexter tossed his bag onto the floor and took a seat at the window, sighing heavily now that he could relax.
"Hey, can I sit here?" a boy asked Dexter. "Hm?" he raised his head and opened his eyes. "Oh yeah, sure." "Thanks," the boy said, taking a seat next to Dexter. "So, I heard you finally got a girlfriend. Who is she?" "North, from our English class." |
North raised her head from the crossword puzzle when her cell phone rang. She reached across the bed and grabbed it, flipping it open to answer when she saw it was Dexter calling, "Hello?"
She paused a bit, not hearing anything, then realized that Dexter's phone must have accidentally dialed. She listened quietly and knit her eyebrows together, curious about what might be going on. |
"So, has she made you a man yet?" the boy asked with a grin, elbowing Dexter. "That's what you're with her for, right?"
"I know it might be beyond your comprehension, but I actually have morals. I wouldn't try to weasel my way into a girl's pants like you would." "Ah, so she's not really your type then?" "I don't really have a type." "Well, do you love her or anything? I mean, why are you even with her if you're not in it for sex?" There was the sound of something impacting a human body, and a yelp from the boy. "Quit being an idiot. I'm with her because I like her. A lot, okay? I like spending time with her. She's sweet and I really love the way she smiles." "Ah man, you've turned into a wuss. Guess you just can't get it up, can ya?" There were more impacts heard, before a loud thump and the boy crying out. "Dexter!" a teacher shouted. "What's the meaning of this!?" "I refuse to let such sleaze sit next to me!" Dexter yelled back. "Moral-less filth like him should ride with the luggage!" He sat back down, crossing his arms angrily. He was beyond pissed off at his encounter with the other boy. "Hey Dexter," came a girl's voice as she leaned over the top of the back of his chair to talk to him. "I just want to tell you that I really admire what you're doing, and even more that you shut that guy up. North's lucky, and I'm really glad that there are still guys like you around." |
North blinked her eyes repeatedly as what she heard sunk in. Blushing bright red, she finally started trying to talk into the phone again, hoping maybe Dexter would hear something, but realizing if he was on the bus, he probably wouldn't, "Hello?! Dexter?"

Dexter sighed, deciding to lay across the entire seat and closing his eyes. He had a five hour bus ride ahead of him, might as well use it to get some sleep. He never heard North's voice coming from his cellphone inside his bag.

North waited a moment, then nodded a bit and hung up her phone. She smiled softly, still blushing. She hoped, however, that Dexter was feeling alright.
The next day North came to lunch and started looking around for Thaddeus. She assumed Dexter wasn't going to be around, and instead getting some sleep after his track meet trip. |
"You alright?" Thaddeus asked Dexter, blinking with surprise that Dexter was even conscious.
"No..." Dexter groaned, tiredly and slowly shaking a juicebox. "I'm outta juice..." Thaddeus couldn't help but laugh a little at the sight of Dexter - his friend's shoulders and head lying on the table, while sipping tiredly at a juicebox - that is until, he ran out of juice. "I'll go get you some more. Do you want some pudding, too?" "Don't think I'm coordinated enough for pudding..." Dexter muttered. There were dark circles around his eyes. "Why did you even come to school today? You had a pass just like the rest of the track team did." "Science test today. Don't wanna miss it..." "You're going to flunk it unless you wake up more." "Juice..." "I'm going, I'm going..." Thaddeus shook his head a little and got up, heading for the lunch line to see about getting Dexter another juicebox. |
North raised her eyebrows when she spotted both of the boys. She hurried over to the table and sat down beside Dexter, patting him on the shoulder as Thaddeus left the table briefly, "Dexter? What're you doing here?"

"Science test today... And I have to work tomorrow when I'd be able to make it up. Then work Wednesday and track on Thursday and Friday and I work all day Saturday..."
"Doofus was the only member of the track team to come to classes today," Thaddeus said, shaking his head as he returned. He placed the juicebox just out of Dexter's reach. "C'mon, sit up and wake up a bit." "Says the guy who falls asleep outside and gets sick..." Dexter groaned and closed his eyes, not even having the energy to reach for the juice. "What happened to those energy shots you drink sometimes?" "There might be one left in my locker... Doubt it though. I think I drank them all this weekend." "You're not supposed to drink more than two every twenty-four hours..." Thaddeus said, his voice full of concern. "Yeah, well, if I croak from it you can blame my track coach, 'kay? Thanks... Night." What few muscles in his body that were tense relaxed as he fell asleep. |
North knit her eyebrows together and looked at Dexter, "Oh dear... I think coming to school today was a bad idea..."
She leaned her elbow on the table and then glanced at Thaddeus, "Do you think there's something we can do to help?" |
Thaddeus made a sound, holding up his finger while he finished chewing his mouthful of sandwich. He then pulled Dexter up into a sitting position, before pouring his bottle of soda onto Dexter's lap.
Dexter jumped, suddenly wide awake, and shuddered a bit, then glanced over at Thaddeus. "What were you drinking?" he asked, his voice a bit hoarse from the mix of exhaustion and surprise. "Dr. Pepper," Thaddeus replied, unwrapping another sandwich. "Alright," Dexter breathed, getting up and heading for the vending machines. |
North stared at Thaddeus, and then glanced over at Dexter getting a replacement drink, "Er... I guess that works... but I'm not sure how that's going to help with the test later."

"Well, he's awake, isn't he?" Thaddeus asked, munching on a couple potato chips. "We discovered that by accident a few years ago while staying up late to study. I was tired and knocked over a drink, it doused him, and he stayed awake for the following couple hours without any trouble."
Dexter put the replacement drink on the table next to Thaddeus. "I'm going to go dig some spare clothes out of my locker. There better be pudding when I get back." And with that, he hurried off for the hallway. |
North listened a moment, then giggled, "Really? I guess the surprise gives him a little extra adrenaline."
She got up carefully, then smiled, "I'll be right back." North went back to the locker room and headed for Dexter's locker, hoping to catch him for a moment while the hallways were quiet and she could talk to him. |
Dexter had dug out his clothes, as well as discovering an energy shot at the bottom of his locker, which he quickly downed, coughing and groaning from the horrible taste afterward.

North went up to Dexter and hugged him tight from behind, "I heard what happened on the bus... your phone got dialed by accident..."

He tensed a bit, blinking quickly as his cheeks began to turn red. "O-oh... It... It was nothing..."

North smiled, "No it wasn't nothing. It was really sweet... you're a great guy, Dexter."
She tilted her head and smiled up at him before, popping up on her toes to place a soft kiss on his lips. |
Eyes widening, his entire body began to tremble softly. "I... wasn't expecting that..." he said weakly, the left corner of his lip twitching with a mix of awkward pleasure and utter shock. "Good thing my pants were already wet," he breathed nervously, before retreating to the bathroom to change out of his soda-soaked clothes.

North blushed brightly, then went to stand near the lockers, waiting for Dexter to change before going back to the cafeteria. She was still sort of in shock from what she'd done, but she didn't regret it at all. Her face was certainly warm though."[/b]

It only took about a minute for Dexter to change his clothes, his wet clothes in a small nylon bag with their school logo on it. He headed for his locker to toss it in the bottom of it, then headed for the cafeteria.

North walked alongside Dexter and quietly took his hand, "Do you feel any better? And... er... I didn't bother you, did I?"

"I feel a lot better, and no..." His cheeks, still somewhat flushed, darkened a bit more. "You didn't bother me, I just... I just wasn't expecting that..."

North's deep blush returned to her face, and she nodded, "I can't say it was really something that was planned out. I just... after what you said, how sweet you were about me... I couldn't help myself..."

"I hate to destroy how happy it made you, but I don't really like anyone being talked about in that manner. I guess I'm one of the rare few that actually believe in love." He sat down at the table and snatched up the pudding cup that Thaddeus had gotten him, as well as pulling the juicebox to himself.
