Pixar's Newest Creation: UP

So, has anyone seen it yet?

I just saw it yesterday and I must say it was fantastic, everything I would expect from Pixar.

Please discuss:
Your thoughts on the movie.
Favorite characters.
Favorite parts.
UP's short accompaniment "Partly Cloudy"
(remember to hide spoilers)

SPOILERX

Like I said before, I thought the movie was awesome. I believe it was one of the funniest Pixar movies to date. The intro to Mr.Fredrickson's relationship with his wife, through to her death was done very nicely. Russell was incredibly funny, and I was impressed that he had a missing parent, that they actually talked about. Usually(I find) in Disney movies, there's often a missing parent, but for no reason whatsoever. I'm glad Mr. Fredrickson overcame his wife's death and became a part of Russell's life. I think it was very powerful when he finally gets his house to "Paradise Falls" and finds out that Elly wanted him to go on his own adventure! The dogs were hilarious. I just loved this movie so much, I can't properly critique it.

I also thought "Partly Cloudy" was a sweet story. My favorite part was when the stork went over to the woman cloud and his cloud got all angry and was pacing back and forth and shooting lightening.

Fabby 05-31-2009 08:33 AM

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm pretty excited. I mean, it's PIXAR.
The worst thing Pixar has ever done is Cars, and that's far from a bad movie.
We'll have to go to the Pavilions to see it in 3D. Even if I do hate the 16th Street Mall with a passion.

Sho-Shonojo 05-31-2009 02:00 PM

Yea, I wasn't much for Cars either, but it's far from a bad movie.

Make sure to pop back and tell me what you thought after you see it. :)

Siri 06-01-2009 06:07 PM

This was definitely my favorite Pixar movie, and that's saying a lot!

I also loved the little cloud movie at the beginning. It was so cute. I kept going aww... at the very beginning because of all the little kittens and puppies. And then you see the sad little cloud and I was like... ;___;

But it ended up being so funny and adorable. I loved the stork! xD;;

Anyway, here are some of my thoughts on the movie, but I'm sticking them in a spoiler tag in case someone wanders over here who hasn't seen it yet. (Though really, if you're planning on seeing the movie and don't want to be spoiled, you shouldn't click on this thread).

SPOILERX

The beginning actually made me cry! ;___;
I already knew going into the movie that the girl would die, so it made the cute kid scenes with them so bittersweet. It was done so well, especially the scenes where Carl and Elie were climbing the hill to get to their picnic spot. When Elie couldn't make it up the hill in the last one, I started crying.

Lol, but little Elie was so insane! I loved how her whole family was exactly like her too. The wedding scene especially had me cracking up, with her side of the family going crazy and Carl's side just sitting there quietly. Hehe, I think some redneck on Elie's side of the church actually fired a gun! xD;;

I don't have much to say about the actual adventure portion of the film, other than it was wonderfully done. I was laughing the whole way, until I almost cried again at the end of the film when Carl flips through Elie's book. I was surprised that the bird had such a big role in the film. From the trailers, I thought it was just going to be some random bird they encountered in the jungle, but much of the story actually revolved around Henry.

Finally, did anyone laugh during the boy scout award ceremony? The first kid got his award for extreme mountaineering and the second kid got his for something equally ridiculous. Then, Russel gets his award for helping the elderly and it sounds so lame, but you know that he went through so much more than the other kids! xD

Really, this movie was so perfect, I just want to see it again. :3

HamletSpamlet 06-02-2009 04:41 AM

I just came back from seeing it, and I thought it was great! I really liked how unconventional the main characters were; typically in animated movies there's a middle of the road kind of male and/or female carrying most of the movie, but this time it was an old white dude and a little asian kid. :D

Spoilering just to be safeX

Also, although it sounds a bit morbid, I enjoyed how there was an actual evil villian in this one, and that at the end he (appeared to have) died. Too many of Disney/Pixar latest movies have been using harmless fluff villians, like the head chef in Ratatouille, or the aliens in Chicken Little. This guy actually meant business!

The scenes with Carl and his wife were very touching; I actually misted up during both of them ;_;

My only critique would be that the dogs, while pretty entertaining, were mostly dead weight meant to keep the kids entertained. But side characters like that are to be expected in films like this, so it didn't take too much from the movie.

I didn't really like the short film before the movie. I didn't find the clouds very endearing at all. It felt really rushed and mostly freaked me out. :shock:

Sho-Shonojo 06-02-2009 03:01 PM

SPOILERX

Yay, more people who loved this movie. I'm surprised by how many people cried/teared up. I'm beginning to feel heartless. I did feel really sorry for them, but I guess I didn't get as touched as other people did. Even the guy I went and saw it with said he cried a little bit. :(

Ellie's family was insane. (explains where she got it from) Carl's family looked like they were going to disown him. I think I was also surprised by the giant part that the bird had in the story. I guess they didn't want to give anything away in the trailers.

I didn't even notice the crazy things that the other kids got badges for. I was too busy waiting for Carl to pin on Russell's badge I think. I just thought of something though. They were gone for several days, I wonder how they explained all that to Russell's mom...

The characters were very different weren't they Hamlet (I hardly recognized you BTW) I think Pixar takes a lot more chances in their movies and veers away from character archetypes (I mean, who else but Pixar could come up with a fish with short term memory loss?) and takes these original characters on original adventures.

I can see what you mean about the dogs. They were a little bit of a loose strand but I loved them nonetheless. Dug was my favorite character.

Did anyone else catch what the next Pixar movie is going to be?

Toy Story 3?

This one has me a little weary, but I'm gonna trust Pixar.

Siri 06-03-2009 03:25 AM

I'm actually excited for Toy Story 3 because I read the summary on Wikipedia for the movie. It sounds like it's going to be really bittersweet. Spoiler tag below with some of my thoughts on the upcoming Toy Story 3 movie~

SPOILERX

Apparently, the toys are going to be dropped off at a local preschool or something because Andy is going off to college. But I read somewhere else that the creators consider preschool/day care to be 'toy heaven' because the toys are guaranteed to be played with for the rest of their lives. :3

That sounds like a great idea to me and it will definitely tie up all the loose ends so no more sequels will be made. Sequels are alright, but I really prefer original movies so much more, especially from Pixar because all of their movies are so great.

Also, is everyone else super excited for The Princess & The Bow and Newt (which are the next two original Pixar movies)? :D

Fabby 06-04-2009 10:22 AM

I finally saw it today. :D
Unfortunately, I missed the previews and the animated short. Silly Fabs has some running around to do before the movie that made her late.

SPOILERX

Okay... this movie was alternately incredibly cute and made me want to squeal with glee and insanely depressing. Poor Ellie D:
I like the fact that we were shown his wife dying (well, sort of) and how the kid explained that his dad was never there. It gave the film a sort of depth that Disney tends to ignore in favor of sugar-coating. It made me cry (okay, not really) but it did make me like the characters more.

And let me say the dogs just made the movie for me. "He wears the cone of SHAAAAME~" is my new line to insert randomly into conversation.

I loved it. And I also appreciate any movie that's in 3-D and doesn't intentionally throw a ton of crap at your face. D:

Sho-Shonojo 06-04-2009 03:28 PM

Wow, it seems like Toy Story 3 will be a lot more interesting than I thought. It seems like the rumor my heard last year wasn't true. He had heard that Buzz Lightyear was being recalled. I'm glad that's not what's going to happen.

I hadn't even heard about the other two movies mentioned. It sounds like they'll be interesting. From the looks of things, the schedule is set so that we get two new Pixar movies in 2011. Of course, one of those is Cars 2, which may or may not be good/

Fabby 06-04-2009 07:21 PM

I'm not sure why they chose Cars, of all their movies, to make a sequel to. Cars is definitely their least popular. :\
But Toy Story 2 was great, so I've got high expectations for Toy Story 3.

Siri 06-04-2009 10:38 PM

@Sho-Shonojo: Ah, that old plotline was the sequel that Disney had planned without Pixar's approval. They technically own all the rights and announced sequels to all of the movies made by Pixar a few years ago. Thankfully, Pixar and Disney got past their disagreements and the team at Pixar took control again, cancelling all of the sequels. They later announced sequels to Toy Story and Cars, although they scrapped the storylines that were approved by Disney earlier. :3

@Fabby: I'm wondering about that myself. I think Pixar knows that it won't be as popular, since they're also releasing another movie that same year. But still... I just don't think that they should make it. Maybe they're being pressured to make that movie since it will sell a lot of toys?

Fabby 06-04-2009 11:08 PM

I'm really thinking Pixar is getting pushed into it. Possibly because they're a GOLDMINE.
Disney's going to completely ruin them, aren't they? D:

Sho-Shonojo 06-04-2009 11:50 PM

Oh I see, that explains it. Disney is the ruination of all good movies. Of course, I'm proud of Disney for The Princess and the Frog. I am unbelievably excited for that because it seems like a well-deserved return to the classics with singing and everything. They just... can't do sequels, except for the second Lion King (not the third) and maybe the second Little Mermaid (again, not the third).

Cars is probably being pushed by Disney a lot, and you're probably right that it's because of the merchandise. I know a kid I used to babysit used to watch Cars all the time and had a ton of merchandise. It's crazy. I like that they'll be releasing another movie during that time, so we don't have to wait a whole other year to see a good Pixar movie. Of course, you never know, it could be good.

Izumi 06-05-2009 02:28 AM

Ohh thanks guys for giving your opinions! Aaron really wants to see this and I was a bit hesitant as the whole movie seems a bit bizarre. Now I can worry not about being bored out of my skull for 2 hours. (I have a horrible time sitting still through a movie - especially if I don't like it...horrible horrible attention span!)

Fabby 06-05-2009 11:57 AM

I actually was kind of hesitant to go see the movie at first too. I saw the trailer and it didn't immediately make me go '=o I MUST SEE THAT' like Wall-E did.

There was a third Lion King? Do you mean Lion King 1 1/2? D:
I hate how Disney has to ruin all their movies with godawful straight to video sequels. I really hope that this isn't the direction Pixar is going to take, but I have... something of a bad feeling.

Sho-Shonojo 06-05-2009 01:14 PM

Yea, by third, I meant 1 1/2. Blech. Sure, it was funny, and it was interesting to see how they tied it in, but it's not something that I'm going to want to watch again.

I'm hoping that since Pixar movies take a lot more time and effort to make, that they won't be going in the direction.

Siri 06-05-2009 06:01 PM

I really don't think Pixar is going to ruin themselves anytime soon. They've been fighting to keep their movies original and unique. They had to deal with a lot of trouble recently because of their choices in lead characters for their last two movies--Wall-E and Carl were criticized due to their lack of marketability. In response, Pixar stated that they wanted to create good movies, rather than advertisements for toys and merchandise. If families are forced to pay $40+ dollars to go to the movies, only to see advertisements for merchandise, they'll eventually stop coming.

And like I mentioned before, they also fought over the rights to their movies and cancelled all of the sequels that Disney began without their approval. For now, the staff at Pixar are doing a great job creating their movies and are not selling themselves out. They've done a great job resisting the pressure that Disney has been placing on them and I think they'll continue to do so for a long time.

Besides, their movies are doing well enough that Pixar can make certain demands. They've already won their right to release movies in the summer (before, Disney made them release movies during Thanksgiving and X'mas). Also, if it were any other company, I doubt Disney would have allowed them release their most recent movies without a complete overhaul of the characters and storylines.

I guess all that I'm trying to say is that I have faith in Pixar. Disney is becoming less and less of a threat as Pixar's movies continue to be successful, despite unconventional characters and storylines. As a result, Disney will be less influential in making decisions for Pixar, since they'll prove they can be successful without the generic movie formulas that seem to be required in all other Disney films.

Sho-Shonojo 06-05-2009 07:42 PM

What a very well thought out point there Pixore. I'm trying to figure out how Wall-e isn't marketable. I mean, don't kids love robots? Come on, he's the cutest thing ever, I've got a poster of him on my wall! I would have bought a pillow and a blanket if I had money! :D

I can see why Carl is less marketable. But there are several other characters they could try to sell if they wanted. But the great is that they don't want to and don't have to. I think that is my favorite thing about Pixar. They concentrate more on making great movies for people to enjoy rather than great movies they can sell. I think that is one of the main reasons I want to work for them.

Captain Howdy 06-05-2009 11:15 PM

@Pixore ~ Your post on the marketability of the Pixar's characters brought something back to mind. My cousin took her son to see Up a few odd days ago. Afterwards, she took him to Target to see if they could find Up toys and she said there was virtually nothing, which is strange. When Disney releases one of their films they flood the toy shelves with items, even before the film is released. It may have just been this one particular Target, but we still thought it was odd.

Siri 06-06-2009 01:31 AM

@Sho-Shonojo: Aww, I love Wall-E too. :3
I think Wall-E toys sold very well in the end. Disney was probably worried since he was old and beat up (i.e. not a brand new Buzz Lightyear), but that just makes him so much more endearing.

@Captain Howdy: That's really strange... I was honestly expecting a billion Dug toys to be out right now... but I actually don't think they're out there! I did a quick google search for Up toys, but I could only find a few collectible figurines.

Or... nevermind! I just found some dog plushies.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dS9o2xQUbs...plush_toys.png

Looks like they're coming out... though much later than usual, if they're usually released long before the movie.

Sho-Shonojo 06-06-2009 06:38 AM

Now I haven't been to the local Wal-mart. That will probably have some sort of UP paraphernalia. I'm also surprised to hear that you weren't able to find much. I'm sure there are things that they could make. I mean, I'm sure there will be some sort of UP playset with little figurines and and some sort of landscape.

Wall-e can be as rusted as he wants, he's still the cutest robot ever conceived. The one from Short Circuit comes in second place. :3

I want a Dug plushy now!

Red Panda 08-02-2009 01:06 AM

Up?

It's a really cute movie. It has talking dogs and grumpy old men. The perfect combination!!!!! It's animation. Did anyone see it, what do you think about it?

xnozomichanx 08-02-2009 02:51 AM

I've seen up. Twice. And I love it.

"I love you temporarily!"

Red Panda 08-02-2009 03:10 AM

I remember that part!!!! The dogs are awesome!!!

"cone of shame"

PinkWafflez 08-02-2009 04:50 AM

I liked the part where they met Dug.
