He could have taken care of your guy as a kid for a little while(then we have if your dude had parents or no parents issue here),
Or that there was a war going on and he got left behind which would also be a found and took care of for one reason or another(which we can figure out),
Or maybe something about vampires happened in the town that your guy lived in at some point and he met mine there while he had been resting or something. :S

How about: My character was abused horribly as a child and your vampire took him away (and killed the parents, of course) during a "vampire infestation" in the town, and then took care of him awhile after for some reason sparing his life, and then set him in a foster family, then vanished as though he was a dream...

But instead of handing him over to a family, how about he was left at a church like, while he was napping or something by my guy (because they'd grown a bit attached and it's not easy for kids to leave adults that are special to them, ya know?), then the church found him a foster home that was also religious?
That would help with the religious background.

And that kind of generic I can deal with. ^^;; It's not exactly the kind I'm trying to avoid, so we're all good thar.

Like if a person was kidnapped and/or tortured, he would slowly start to take the captors size and rather than wishing to escape, they'd want to stay by the side of the captor(or whomever).
