Harry Potter: Movie and Catch-all Discussion
There is a "Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix" Thread, but I didn't want to post in there about the new movie or previous ones, since it's not on topic to it. So I wanted to do a topic that would be about all the "HP" movies and various media it has reached; including merchandise, and the fandom.
If you feel that you are going to post something no one should know yet, please use the Spoiler tag. I personally Love spoilers. Some more linkage: * J.K.Rowling Official Site * The official site for HARRY POTTER movies * Wikipedia Harry Potter * fanWiki Harry Potter * IMDB search Harry Potter ** Harry Potter Books discussion Anyway, I never read one Harry Potter book :sweat: I do plan on it though. For now, I just found the movies to be entertaining, and I like reading post from HP fans- since they come up with a lot of interesting things to type about. My favorite House (for some reason) is "Hufflepuff". _____ lol I am impressed and glad that they kept the same Actors from the very first film. Usually people have such doubts about children actors aging. As for the new movie "Half Blood Prince". I hope there is more character focus, rather than 'action action action'. I think that is what was wrong with the last movie, too much jumping to get to the "good stuff" and not enough focus on the characters. I am not expecting HP movies to have everything from the books, but I do expect it to pay attention to important things that made the book work. Yet I don't find any of the movies bad, I think they are rather impressive. |
HARRY POTTER, HARRY POTTER IN 14 DAYS!
i have been waiting FAR too long for this! ;D
|
This belongs in media discussion since it is the topic of a movie. =) I am going to move it there for ya.
|
sorry, i got excited.
XDD |
It looks good, but I am always disappointed because they cant fit everything and then they change stuff to sell tickets. So frustrating!!!!
|
ugh, i know!
hopefully this one will be closer to the book! the book was so good.. the movie has a lot to live up to. |
There is just only so much they can do without making it a 4 hour movie.
|
eeek!
I think that half the fun of a Potter movie is just going to see it...regardless of how, um..er...terrible they actually are. It's all rather....pulpy, isn't it? At any rate, I'm super excited! I can't wait....even more so after they moved the date! eek!! |
I think they should have risked turning HBP into a two parter... it would definitely be something that gives the movie stretch, and it would be enough room to put in character and side stories.
It seems like the Trailer is about "Romance". Even the Summery on the official Movie site, makes it seem that way. ^^;; I am gonna find some spoilers to read and see just how good the director is at Romance. EDIT clicking the IMDB link. It seems that there will be a two parter for the Deathly Hollows! Which I think is an excellent choice. |
Yeah, the Deathly Hallows thing was announced quite a while ago. Ordinarily I'd be behind it as a good idea, but with the debacle surrounding holding this movie from November to July to cash in on the summer box office, I see the two-part conclusion more as a way to bilk the fans out of more money rather than a vehicle to make a better conclusion.
Particularly since they didn't even seem to contemplate making Order of the Phoenix into a two part movie, and it was the longest and most dense of the books. |
I really don't think the two-part finale is a great idea either. It's just an excuse to get our money, especially since not that much happened in the last book. If the directors could cut down the third, fourth, fifth and sixth books and make them into one movie each, why can't it be done with the last book too?
I just hope they don't waste so much time camping out in their tent in the first half, because those were very boring scenes in the book. It'll be even worse in the movie, imho. Seriously, all of the action and exciting moments happen in the second half of the book... the first Deathly Hallows movie is going to be a snooze-fest, unless scenes are changed around. |
I honestly have no qualms with Deathly Hallows being split into two parts. I'm kind of concerned more about where they will decide to split the two movies. That will probably be the make or break point for the two films. But then again, I can't really see them butchering it any worse with two films then with one.
I imagine the first part will probably be a little more character based where as the second one would be more action based. |
I actually really liked the second film, but I guess I wasn't expecting much, after seeing the first one. xD;;
But yeah... where will they split the movies? There's no really good place to end the first half of the movie. I only read the final book once, so I don't remember it very clearly, but I really can't recall a good end-of-the-movie scene toward the middle of the book. If anything, maybe they can use the part by the lake where Ron was hallucinating? But that would be kind of lame... :( The same person that directed the fifth and sixth movies is going to direct both Deathly Hallows movies though, right? I really liked the fifth one and it seems like I'm going to like the sixth movie based on the previews, so maybe I shouldn't be worrying too much. And does anyone know when both of the final movies will be released? I really don't want to wait a year to watch the second half. Please tell me that it's going to be a thanksgiving/x'mas and then a summer release. |
I have been waiting awhile to see the new movie.
I can't wait to see it either. I am really hoping that I have off next weekend to go see it because it's one of the movies I really really wanna see. I have been in love with the series for nearly ten years now and I will never get tired of it. I think J.K Rowling is awesome author for creating something so awesome like Harry Potter :3 |
Making movies is expensive XD I don't see an issue with two part movies.
They should have split certain ones into two parts, just to fit what was necessary. When you have something with so many events. To basically squish it down to an hour is just bad (to me). Kill Bill was meant to be taken as a whole movie with no splits, but (whoever) told the Director to make it a two parter. That is something that could have worked as just one whole movie alone. Now that is an example of something that is money grabbing. And basically thinking that people won't sit in the theater long enough to see the end... which is just a weird way to think. Anyway. If anyone has any spoilers, please post XD |
Their track history of simply chopping quasi-essential parts of the story over the course of the first 5 movies let me know that holding necessary parts of the plot together is not their number one priority. The fact that they held movie 6 for half a year to make more money from the summer box office lets me know that juicing the fans for cash is their number one priority. :)

I can't wait until the sixth movie comes out! -squweeee! is so excited-
I am most likely going to cry during the movie like I did when I read the book. (Also cried during the fourth movie/book, fifth movie/book, sixth book, and seventh book.) I still think the books are better, no information gets cut out unlike the movies. But I still enjoy seeing the action, rather than just reading it. |
lol of course the book version is going to be more expansive than the movie. A movie works on Time w/ Money, a book doesn't. Unless they are doing some heavy promoting and have to make back what they put out.
Summer is a smarter release and the "duh factor". What I am getting at, is people being paranoid about it. Either spend money to see it in the theater or drop 20 bucks on the DVD. Either way it is your choice. Or just stick to reading the books... no one is stopping you XD Bleh, moving away from that. There is a gearing up for the HBP - Family Channel is showing all the movies in order. They show it twice; afternoon and night. Well except for OotP - that is on HBO. |
Man, it must be nice to have that kind of simple naïveté about the whole thing. :)
|
GO READ THE BOOKS, THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER.
I'm hoping that the sixth movie is really really really good. I was kind of disappointed with the fifth movie, which was expected because that was my least favourite book. BUT REALLY, THEY LEFT OUT THE BEST PART! I really loved the part in the book where they had to wrestle the giant brains and Ron went all weird. xD It was so funny! And they left it out. D: That means that later in the other movies, Ron can't pull up his sleeve and go, "Look! I still have the marks from the brains." D: Oh well. xD I have one major thing about the seventh movie that I really want them to include, but I doubt they will. It's not so much that I /want/ it to be included, but it needs to be. I bet they're going to have Harry and Ron with their normal haircuts, which will be completely wronnnnggg. In the book, it describes Harry as having his hair past his shoulders since he had been living in the woods for a few months. He's all disheveled. xDD Harry Potter has been driving me crazy, I can't waiiiittt. But I'm not seeing the midnight release because my two best friends (WHOM I REQUIRE TO SEE IT WITH) will not be back from China until this Saturday and then will have major jet lag, so we'll probably see it Sunday or Monday. D: I kind of am disappointed in the two part movie for the seventh one because I'll be writhing with anticipation for a whole year for the second part. xD I made a statement that I wanted to not see the first part until the second part came out so I could watch them together. xD But I know I won't be able to wait. </3 AND THEY KILLED MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER GODDAMNIT. Okay, I'm going to get out of this thread before I start attacking people. xD <3 |
Thanks for the spoiler and info "StripedSocks`. It made me laugh xD
lol there are a lot of characters. Which favorite were you referring to? Various postings from people who claimed to have seen HBP. Mostly found it to be "wordy". While others found it to be character focused. = Kinmotsu I get it, it bothers you that Studios want Money. I know they want Money; it's common sense, and a long time strategy. Going on about it is just bringing down the mood. And there are other things to talk about besides Money and WB. So there is no need to insult me over it. If you and "Siri" want to discuss it together, that is fine. I personally just don't want to dwell on it. |
@Bunai: Lol, why put my name in quotes? xD;;
I'm officially Siri now. Xb Anyway, I'm soo excited for the movie right now. The trailer for it seems so action-packed and dramatic. :3 I did hear that there's a huge focus on relationships for a good chunk of the movie though. (But that's a good thing, because it'll be fun to watch for me)! Unfortunately, I won't be able to see it until Saturday. ;___; |
Harry Potter and the Catch-all Discussion was a great book. Very deep and introspective. I like the part where Ron realizes that the subtle homoerotic feelings he has for Harry are just manifestations of his envy for him.
And I must say that I was deeply touched by the bit where everyone gathers to host an intervention for Professor McGonagall and her Butterbeer addiction. ... I can't wait for the movie to come out. ... :lol: *shot* |

Some Usernames are common words, or blend into the post; so I make them stand out by quotation or bolding. It is not a 'Grr' attack ^_^ Quote:
And I do wonder how the movie handles not focusing on Harry. I am a dork for liking how the Uniforms change every Year XD |
Haha, okay then. I thought it was because I just changed my username and you were referring to me as "Siri" in quotations because it was like I was hiding my original username or something. xD;;
And... I really liked how the fifth film focused on Harry so much. The other films focused a lot more on the magical elements in the storyline and comedy, imho. But the books are named after the lead character for a reason and it was really nice to see him in the spotlight during the last movie. Anyway, I will probably come back here again on Saturday to discuss the film. I won't come in any earlier because I don't want things spoiled for me. I've read the books, but it'll be fun to see for myself the things that the movie does differently. I hope that you get to see the film as early as possible, Bunai! :3 |
