Banks are ridiculous.
My bank called me up threatening to take action against me for not making payments on my credit card.. that I was making. I called them up and they informed me that they simply hadn't noticed it was scheduled and they'd complained a day before it posted.
This from the same bank that refused to properly schedule my credit card payments before, causing me hundreds of dollars of fees x_x And it's still one of the better banks I've had. Since asking you all what your worst experiences with banks were would only lead to resurfaced frustrations, I'm going to instead ask this: What are the BEST experiences you all have had with banks? And seriously, what banks are they, because I've yet to find a decent one. |
I don't deal with banks much... but I've found that the inside of banks are always rather cold and the people are often unfriendly. Except for this one bank that my parents go to. When I was little, I would go to the bank with my mom and we would go through this drive-thru-ish thing and the lady at the window would always give me a lollipop. ;D
|
my husband and i stick with smaller, more local banks
always works well for us |
@ StripedSocks` - I remember when I was little getting those =D
Sadly after growing up I don't see anyone doing it now :( Now it's "Make as much money from you as possible" >.< |
@Kaze;; I think the bank that I used to visit still does it, but I don't go to the bank anymore. xD
|
I'm younger, so I haven't done the big dealings with banks. But something I've found is, my local bank tellers have made a point of learning my name, they ask me to bring them food from my work...it's really nice.
|
I'd make a point of learning your name if you were bringing me food, too.
I haven't had any luck finding reputable local banks before, and I move enough that it becomes overly complicated if I do that, as well. I'll keep it in mind for when I settle more, though. |
Banks are lame. I like mine, Wells Fargo, but then again I don't have any bills to pay, I have a joint account with my mom so I don't have a minimum amount I have to keep in my accounts, and I only have a couple hundred dollars going through every month. I've banked with them for two years and I've only had one problem: I was mysteriously signed up for the check card rewards program and had a $12 annual fee deducted, even though I hadn't changed a thing about my account in months, and I wouldn't have registered anyways because I don't have enough money to spend to earn rewards. I went to the bank and got out of the program and got my money back in a matter of minutes.
Bank of America, however, is the devil... I wouldn't trust them with a penny. My boyfriend banks with them and they always mess things up, costing him some sort of fee :/ My dad uses B of A and when he transfers me money for school, it takes forever to go through... almost two weeks once. |
Wells Fargo is who I'm complaining about :P
They used to be better, but they started giving me a lot of problems over the past few years. Really, I think it's only their credit card/reward card division that really screws up. Your statement serves to support that idea. Everything I've heard about BoA from dozens of people makes it out to be amazing that it's still in business- and all the employees of BoA I know or knew refuse(d) to bank with it. Though, I've found that's very common for employees of any bank, to bank elsewhere. Still, that's one of the only banks I know of where the employees encourage you not to bank there :P |
Bank of America IS evil, on the corporate level, and they don't stand by what they say about unauthorized usage of your card by someone else. I have a story, but it's too long and complicated to tell on here. Let's just say that after banking with them for about 20 years, I shut down my account and moved to another bank, WAMU. I moved a few years ago, and where I live now doesn't have WAMU, so I opened up an account with a local bank here. I've been happy with them, though they have a few things that make it a little inconvenient for me, but I'm not up for searching for yet another bank.
|
Wamu-
How can you not love something who's name is two silly sound effects merged together? |

I think you might want to consider looking for a new bank to take your business too. Or even tell them you're going to switch to another bank, to scare them. When you hit them in the area, they tend to listen to you and actually do work / fix things they messed up on. |
I really dislike banks as well. I once went $1 negative and they charged me $35 a day. By the time I had the money to pay it off my negative account balance was over $100. I had to wait until payday and I told them this too but there was nothing they could do... so they said.
I really dislike Chase. We have our car payment through them and there are times when we pay them and they claim they never got the payment.(Has happened 2 times) I don't know if it's a conflict with Chase and our bank... it takes a heck of a long time for the money to get pulled from our bank account. Thing is... a lot of times the money was pulled when Chase said they never recived payment. So I have no clue what the heck they are trying to pull. Luckily we save our recipts and transactions we do so we had/have proof that we paid. |
Wachovia and First National didn't- they just kept screwing up.
Wells Fargo has been a bit better about it, actually. Besides, it's not often that I have other banks available to switch to- either by measure of convenience, account requirements, or even just lack of presence of other banks. Quote:
Had similar problems with the credit card with Wells Fargo- they kept changing my payment schedule/amounts on me and it kept overdrafting my account -_- With Wachovia, they still hadn't sent me a debit card after most of a year of trying to get them to, and many profuse promises that they were in fact sending it. And, once again..and other crappy stuff. Banks, bah. |
I've not had too much trouble with any bank, then again I've only ever had two, USAA and Suntrust. USAA is still one of the better ones I've dealt with, especially since I was in the Air Force and they do help the military folks out. They never gave me any issues about credit cards or anything, but I had things set up so that it was automatically paid (a set amount) when I got paid.
Since getting out of the service, Suntrust has been decent about the same sort of thing, but it's just harder for me to get used to it---as was getting out of the military. I've heard that same thing about Wells Fargo, where they charge you for every little thing and make it hard to make payments or they say that you didn't make a payment when you did. I've never heard anything about Wachovia... |
Ugh, Suntrust. It's the official bank for UCF, so most of the students get..encouraged to try it.
And almost all of them have major problems with it- to the point that I didn't dare walk next to one  Seriously, though, I heard some really bad stories, and I know some of them definitely were true. I've heard some good stuff about the military banking- I think it was USAA. And yeah, I haven't heard much bad about Wachovia, either- and to be fair, their loan division was really nice from what I saw of it (but, then again, that's part of the business, I suppose). Their tellers were fairly annoying, and their services kept having problems; And, of course, I never got that debit card.. |
My bank, the only one I've used, sucked so bad I've given up on banks for awhile.
They authorized a transfer of all the money I had saved up in there, which was over $1100, to another account that wasn't mine without my permission. I didn't even get a phone call or anything. I didn't find out until it was too late. I was PO'ed to the MAX. I don't think there's such a thing as a decent bank. =/ They have their moments though. |
That's ridiculous- banks are explicitly not allowed to send to new accounts without proper authorization~ I know my banks typically notify me when I'm doing standard transfers.
I'm not sure if the point where they're explicitly strict about transfer management is 1K+ or 2K+ though- I think it's around there. REGARDLESS of the details: It's still ridiculous. I assume you didn't get it back? :/ |
ouchies. .-.
i'm lucky to say (and i hope i don't jinx myself) that so far i haven't had much trouble with my bank. it's a local bank in hawaii and when my wallet (debit card included) got stolen someone used it and they refunded the money back to me right away. of course i had to have a police report on it which i did. the thing is, i don't know how the people used my debit card. it was apparently at a gas station, but the gas station they went to, i knew very well and they always required picture ID. <- guess the gas station didn't really look at the person's FACE. x-x;; |
Maybe your evil twin was the one who stole it?
Good that things worked out with the debit card; Banks aren't liable for losses from debit cards, though everything past 20$ on a credit card is safe if you report it's loss within three days. |
Thankfully I've never really had issues with my bank (BofA) but I think I have it a bit easy. I have a checking account that's free cause I'm a student and my credit card through them- I never use (just pay off), so i never really have issues. I did lose my debit card once and the people on the phone weren't that helpful, but when I actually went into the bank they were nice and super helpful.
My friend on the other hand also has an account with Bank of America and she had a ton of crap when the bank messed up and withdrew $1950 instead of $650. She freaked out for a night b/c the people on the phone didnt help at all, but the next day it was cleared up. She's still annoyed if you bring it up though lol I'm just lucky I guess. *knocks on wood* I didn't know they weren't liable for the lost money on debit cards O_o |

Sure, many WILL do it-
But debit cards are, as a rule, insecure and unprotected. I'm a Business major, and I once had a whole lecture just on banking security- that was one of the topics: The lecturer declared it to be 'inexcusable' for anyone that had taken that lecture to use debit cards over credit cards unless they had to. All the books on the subject I've read, as well as bank literature I've got a hold of from the banks I've been by agree to that. Here's a statement on the topic, with the supporting note on the matter underlined: Quote:
With debit cards, you're required to prove the loss of money. As Infinitys Echo said, the banks typically try to get out of it, and you have to go through a lot to get it back. In the end, it's just another element of how good your bank is. It's been a while since I covered the subject, so this is all I can really say about it. |
Hm, I've been with Commerce-now-TD bank for a few years now and I've had no problems what-so-ever. Never had any problems with my checking or my savings accounts, both of which I can access online.
I find that makes doing everything online to be much easier but then again, there are very few bills for me to pay. Hence, why I don't really worry about my debit card being stolen. Worse damage that could be done at any moment really would be I'd be out a little bit of money, if for some reason the bank doesn't do anything. |
