All oral

So just about an hour ago I had surgery to remove my tonsils and adenoids. For quite a long time my tonsils have been giving me problems including re-infection of strep throat, and sleep apnea. Now that they're gone I hope I can breathe much better as well as have less infections.

Edit: the Adenoids are known to rot in the mouth on occasion, causing chronic bad breath. Mine were fine, but they removed them anyway.

Apparently the surgeon was quite impressed at the size of my tonsils, which were the size of Tootsie Roll Pops!

Have any of you ever had surgery to fix something?(Be it a minor or major surgery)

HikariKuro 07-29-2009 02:47 AM

My heart and my tonsils and adenoids.

I had a problem with one of my heart valves leaking blood into my lungs when I was real little. The valve deformed and it kinda merged with my lungs. I used to cough up blood from time to time.....

I was awake when my tonsils and adenoids were removed. They couldn't give me a hole lot of knockout gas or medicines cause my heart rate would drop dangerously low. I was royally freaked out and ended up kicking the surgeon in the head.

I also had wisdom teeth removed and about nine other teeth so I could have ten years of braces..... Why ten years you ask? Because I HATED wearing those stupid rubber bands, which were needed for a couple of my teeth! >_<

^ Scary!

When I was born I had a hole in my heart (I was born 10 weeks early and my heart wasn't fully developed) so I had surgery on that. They told my parents, at the time, that I probably wouldn't survive the surgery. Obviously I did because here I am. I was only 2 pounds 6 oz when I was born, and after the surgery my weight dropped to under 1 pound.

Other than that I had knee surgery when I was 17. The ligaments attached to my kneecap didn't pull it correctly and it would frequently pop out of joint, dropping me to the ground in excruciating pain. I had surgery to alleviate that - which it did, but it still happens sometimes. :(

PS - Mist Dragon I hope you're feeling better soon!

Mist Dragon 07-29-2009 06:40 AM

Actually I was feeling just fine until about three hours after the surgery. I guess the rest of the anesthesia and other drugs wore off. For right now it's actually quite miserable. The medicines I have to take are all liquid and not exactly delicious. I have to act like I'm gargling one, but not actually gargle it. it has to sit in the back of my throat for a minute, then I swallow. Did I mention I can't breathe out of my nose?

Thanks for the get well soons. and both of you: jeeze those sound a bit more serious than mine. I'm glad you're both here because you both seem to be good people.

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago. That really sucked. >.>
They had to put me to sleep for the time, and then had a lot of problems waking up.
Waking up was the worst part of the entire time, not the actual operation.

MissYoungDelilah 07-29-2009 01:40 PM

Can I just ask, what are wisdom teeth? And I hope you're all well :)

Horo 08-01-2009 05:24 AM

Clair Voyant:
How come it was so terrible waking up?

This wasn't a surgery on me, but on one of my close friends.
She had problems with her heart and stuff, I can't remember exactly because I was young when she told me and I haven't really asked her about it again recently. Anyways, when she was getting operated on, the drugs weren't putting her to sleep, so she was awake for the entire heart surgery. She was talking to the nurses and stuff. I think that would be scary, but she was stoned out of her mind and she couldn't feel a thing. xD They gave her adult doses of whatever it was to put her to sleep and they weren't working. ^^;; But she said she didn't remember hearing music in the background, so I'm guessing she was pretty out of it.

@Miss - Your wisdom teeth will be the teeth in the way back on either sides. They're quite difficult to remove and they usually have to numb you up pretty good to remove them. I know my dentist was talking about removing mine once they came out. I have pits in my teeth though. Possibly linked with my mother smoking when she was pregnant.

I had something called Pyloric Stenosis when I was an infant, and they had to do surgery to correct it. Basically the muscle that controls the valve after the stomach wasn't allowing my food to pass through it which then caused me to vomit up anything they tried feeding me. My mom has it too. Apparently it's hereditary and more common in whites than any other race. It's not a big thing as it's been corrected. But I have a scar on my tummy where they had to operate.

I almost had surgery for my broken arm
but the doctors decided against it and just out a cast on me

Queen of Spades 08-02-2009 04:26 AM

I had the same procedure done when I was four, including the adenoids. Mine were HUGE.
They were even bigger than a 25 year old mans tonsils, who had to get HIS out because they were too big.
My mom took me to get them out for the same reason, sleep apnea. Apparently I snored so loud that if she was downstairs, she could still hear me snoring. (We lived in a quad, which has three stories and a basement.) The doctors were scared I would stop breathing in my sleep and suffocate. I kept getting sick all the time, due to lack of good sleep. Ever since I got them out, I am like NEVER sick.

Also, after I got them out, I kept them in the fridge, and I brought them to school for show and tell. Actually I brought them with me everywhere, including the Subway when we would eat. xD

Luzzy 08-02-2009 04:41 AM

My sister had her tonsils removed when she was around 2 or 3 because she couldn't sleep properly and they were always inflamed.

And uhh I had strep throat late last year. And I had to get a molar extracted cos my braces made it frail and caused it to rot off and break into pieces. No real surgeries though.
I DID break my chin when I was a toddler because I was jumping while taking a bath. >___> Had to get stitches and all that other fun stuff. And a friend of mine split open the area above my eye with a badminton racquet sophomore year. xDDD
Nahhh, I think I'm just accident-prone. I twist and break my ankles about twice a year. D: I'm not even an athletic person. At the beginning of school this past year, I was just frolicking in the quad when my foot just gave underneath me and BAM, it's dead.

Queen of Spades, you made me lol. xDD I have no idea what tonsils even look like, but i know I wouldn't be showing them off. xD

Last summer I had a cyst under my tongue. I hate pretty much anything having to do with my mouth, so having a surgery that could have possibly been very serious was not something I would want to go through again. Other than that I might have had a tooth pulled when I was younger.

Radioactive Lullabye 08-02-2009 04:46 AM

A year ago I actually had surgery in my mouth. I've lucked out and haven't had the need to have my wisdom teeth removed but because of an x-ray that i didn't exactly consent to my insurance there was an extra tooth found up in my hard palate that had to be removed because it was wearing at the roots of my two upper front teeth. That was nasty because they had to go and open up my palate and dig in. It was interesting though in the end to see the tooth. It looked like a Fang! That was the first surgery I've ever had then this summer was the first broken bone I've ever gotten....

Summer is NOT nice to me sadly.

Ambutts 08-02-2009 04:48 AM

Gah, wisdom teeth, forgot about them... I'm going to have to have them removed sooner or later...

I haven't have anything so serious that it needed invasive surgery but I have a fraction in my foot bone [not sure exactly where] and I made a deep gasp above my eye socket that also took out my eye but that’s about all I can recall at the moment.:/

D; I had alot of ear infections as well but I hated that banana medicine-it was pink too. It should have been yellow.

I think the only surgery I've had was to remove a birthmark or something. I was a baby then, so I don't remember it.

Right now I'm lucky enough that I don't need them removed, and I'm hoping that it stays that way. But knowing my luck when i reach like forty they'll need to be removed. That's happened to my uncle.

I haven't gotten my tonsils out yet, but I did just get my wisdom teeth out. And my mouth hurts like crap! >.<

Hughesmunculus 08-03-2009 02:24 PM

I had my tonsils removed while having my eyelid worked on. My left eyelid doesn't have a muscle in it and the surgery was to help it stay up on it's own with out the muscle.

Oh god, Tonsils.. I had them and my adenoids removed when I was like, 6 or maybe 7, I'm not sure. It was miserable. I couldn't eat, I hardly drank, and I couldn't swallow my spit, so I had to carry around a paper towel so I could spit into it when I built up too much saliva...And for a kid my age, that was a loooot.

I didn't eat for 12 days. When I did eat, it wasn't much at all. I was in so much pain! And then the memorable night was when I was asleep, and suddenly woke up coughing A LOT of blood. It might not've been that much really, but to a 7 year old waking up from sleep and seeing blood it looked scary. Not to mention it HURT. And I was coughing. Oh god.
I think that was when the scabs came off.

I think I nearly went into a panic when someone jokingly told me they could grow back. xD Good luck with your healing!

I had surgery on my hip when i was about 9 i think... maybe younger... I cant remember my age  i have 2 metal screws in my hip cause its slipped out place so they had to put those there to keep it back i was supposed to get them removed but they never took them out. so my hip always hurts and i cant bend it as far as i should so i might have surgery to get them removed when im older. i had a big... i guess cover/flap of skin removed when i was 5 cause when i was born the skin grew over my ear so it was just like a big ball Dx i almost had surgery on my ankle and wrist when i feel down the stairs but it was just popped out place so they popped um back (it hurt like hell!) :P

hollowmoon 08-05-2009 03:15 AM

Ouch! Yeah, it hurts SO MUCH when a joint pops out.

XxXx-Eternal-Snow-xXxX 08-05-2009 04:16 AM

yea but on top of that they didnt even give me meds to dull the pain or anything they just popped it back Dx

Strumpet Doll 08-05-2009 08:05 PM

I've had my tonsils removed.
In fact, I did last year before Christmas.
I use to get strep throat and tonsilitis ALL the time.
My tonsils would swell and close, making it hard to breathe and everytime I swallowed it felt like I was swallowing glass.
I missed SO much school, it's amazing I even passed my sophmore year. =/
Anywho, I was terrified at first about the surgery and pain.
But honestly? The surgery part was... fun.
The doctor said my left tonsil was rotting, gross right? And my tonsils were HUGE!
It was awesome how quickly they knocked me out with the drugs.
I remember talking to a nurse, and halfway through my scentence it went black.
Then it felt like not even a few seconds later, I was waking up in recovery.
My throat didn't hurt until about three hours after the surgery. Ice and cold broth helped a LOT. I was drinking cold drinks at ALL times. I was a little disappointed that the ice cream and milkshake thing was a myth though. I tried it (against my doctor's orders) and it made it so hard to breathe and swallow.
The white stuff that formed over where my tonsils had been? Gross.
The liquid pain medication? Tasted like dog crap and had the opposite effect on me. I was wired and couldn't sleep, and when I did sleep I had to do it sitting up.
However, sleep did a lot for me... and it sure did pass the time. Funny thing is, the more time passed the worst the pain got until the scabs came off and stuff. I always kept an ice pack over my throat too when it got real bad.
C= I hope you get to feeling better! The surgery was SO worth it for me. I haven't had a sore throat (not counting allergies) since after they were taken out!
