District 9
I just saw this movie at the theater yesterday and I must say that it's one of my favorite's of this summer.
For anyone who hasn't heard of it, it's about a city in South Africa that has become the host of a million aliens after their ship got stuck. It may seem like just another alien flick, but I think this movie is truly a piece of art. It's a great action flick while having sentimental value (my sister cried at the end), as well as being a thought-provoking film. I loved how real it was. None of the film seemed staged or made up. It all felt like it could really happen. I can say this for the characters too. They all had good qualities and bad. Sometimes you love 'em and sometimes you hate 'em. Has anyone else seen this movie? Or is planning to see this movie? I'd love to talk about it. |
I really want to see it. My boyfriend says he'll take me on his next day off ^^
I think it's an interesting concept. Certainly it's a welcome change from the typical "ZOMG ALIENS ARE ATTACKING THE EARTH" and... well, ET. But now I want to go watch Alien. xD |
It's definitely a step away from the traditional alien movie.
Ha, Alien. There's a step back in time. |
Aww, man. I knew I should have seen this instead of Julie & Julia. ;___;
|
What? Julie and Julia wasn't good? I want to see it though.
It was very good. You should definitely see it if you get another chance to go to the theater. |
Julie & Julia was alright. I love Meryl Streep and all of her scenes were fantastic! However, I do think Julie's story was lacking, which sucked because she got more screentime. :(
I definitely will see District 9, but probably not until it comes out on DVD. I really want to see 9, which is coming out soon and I want to buy the next Professor Layton game in a few days. So yeah, I'm pretty much going to be broke and I shouldn't waste too much money at the movies, even if I go to a cheap matinee showing. |
I saw District 9 the day it came out and I have to say it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I mean the first like 45min of the movie I felt like I was watching the Discovery Channel on aliens. But it was very convincing. Great story line and good direction. But I would have made it more movie-ish and less documentary at the beginning. I like that the guy actually started turning into one. It was a slap in the face and I feel that he was learning the lesson of "take a walk in someone else's shoes." But it was kinda boring and I don't believe I would watch it again. The previews were great too. I am looking forward to watching ZombieLand, Jennifer's Body, and Inglorious Basterds though, they look great :insane:

Man, I saw this a couple of days ago, it was awesome!! I loved it, it was not what I was expecting at all.
I heard that they just let the characters improve the whole movie as long as they hit a certain number of points in their speech. |
Whoa, be careful Lorwynmoontide. Please make sure to put spoilers in [hide ] tags so no one reads them by accident.
Yea, I understand that the way it's done isn't for everyone. I liked the documentary approach though. @Tilly: So the actors got to improve? I never would have guessed. Oh, and I found out from my sister that there was online advertising for this movie two years before it came out. Christopher wrote a blog about what was going on before hand. It's interesting to read, but I don't think it sounds a lot like the Christopher from the movie. Go to www.mnuspreadslies.com. It's really weird reading after the fact. I feel like I missed out. |
Having the documentary at the beginning was about the most clever thing the director could have done. Too much back story that we needed for it to be done in movie format. xD I was disappointed in the beginning when it seemed like the whole movie was going to be like that. Not that it would have been bad even as a documentary, but I did want a movie-movie. I love so much how it slowly turned away from documentary. I didn't even notice it ^ ^ I was just having fun at that point. But yea. I saw this one twice already [insert: *rolls over, has epic seizure*] Don't think I've ever fallen more in love with a movie before. ; 3; I love the little Bebeh Alien and Christopher Johnson is my favorite character. |
Yea, the slow progression from documentary to movie was really good. I didn't really notice either.
You saw it twice? I'm jealous. I wish I had more money so I could see it again. I want a poster of Christopher. |
D: I'd like the movie poster, the sad one that shows a silhouette of them on a white panel with gunshots. Though that poster makes me sad, I still think it is very cool. If you want to know more on it, here's something I found after a little research: Alive in Joberg A 2005 short film by Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 Found it from a Q&A asking if the movie was based from a book. Figures though that it isn't. Instead it is based off of this short film. |
Well my computer would only load the first half of the video, but it was very interesting to watch. You can definitely see the influences from the movie. I like the designs of the suit and aliens a whole lot more than the short film ones. :3
I'll have to try again later to watch the rest. My computer is being mean. |
Ok i havent ever seen that movie and i never want to it sounds really creepy so that is a NEVER WANNA SEE EVER!
|
@zovilove: sure? . ^ . I don't see what's wrong with creepy. It's an exceptional film. Even both my parents, particularly my mother loved the film. It touches on more ideals other than it being a sci-fi alien movie. @Sho: xD Of course the props in District 9 are a whole lot better. The short film is old, and it's just a short film ^ ^ I hope you can get your computer to load the other half. It's worth watching, considering it's sort of a prologue to the film. |
@ Zovilove: Well, some parts were creepy, but I think it is definitely worth watching.
@Veiss: True of course. But I like the direction they took the designs in. Like, I'm glad they didn't keep the aliens fully clothed how they were in the short film. It's very impersonal, and you don't feel like you know them. I guess that's something i really liked about this film. The designs of the aliens were very original, and while they were grotesque at first, they really grow on you as you watch the film. Man, I want to see it again. TT.TT |
;; ~ ;; I want to watch it again too. District 9 was all the rage in class today. Some kid was even watching a ripped version...which of course...just deludes it sooo much. No one so far dislikes it. |
That's great to hear. I don't start class until Monday, so I'll see then if I can find anyone else to talk about it with. Who can not like it.
The guy I went to see it with said something about being disappointed, but he wouldn't expand on that, and he's just weird anyway. |
Nope i just can not watch it if there is aliens in it no i cant i will die of scaredness.
|
Not an alien fan huh? You kind of have to be an alien fan to see this movie.
|
Yah because in every movie aliens are evil and taking over the world why cant they mix it up a little bit i mean come on.
|
These aliens aren't trying to take over the world. They are stuck on Earth with no way to get home.
|
oh so do they kill humans!
|
@zovilove: It goes both ways but just barely. Humans kill them for the majority. The aliens ever rarely kill the humans. When they do, it's no more than just an attitude problem against a bad human who threatens them. Even then, it's probably one of the lesser intelligent aliens. You have to understand that in this movie, the aliens are oppressed and badly mistreated. They have manners as we do. As a matter of fact, they're the only ones with manners. The humans kill them if they show any sign of disrespect, and they don't return good manner either. I don't know how else to describe the relationship between them and the humans. Humans are the killers and the bad guys in this film. It really isn't your typical sci-fi alien flick. Think of Apartheid but at a galactic level. That's literally what happens here. |
What Veiss Wynd said. :3
