Wal-marts here took all their self-check-outs out cause of people stealing.

But our local grocery store has one, and I fight with it all the time.

"OMG it is NOT an unexpected item in bagging area, I TOTALLY just scanned it! -takes it out- And now you're telling me I'm missing an item WTF -spirit bomb-"

I make sure I watch.
Give people the stank eye or walk around while people are scanning.

They're nice when you're buying two things. Otherwise they just piss me off...

I know what you mean CAS, our grocery stores after 10pm its just self checkout and that is when my mom loves to shop...its sucks hard core because it won't register things like bread and chives

4011 is bananas.
4065 is green pepper.
4062 is cuccumber.
4611 is garlic.
4032 is watermelon.
4319 is cantaloupe.
4087 is roma tomatoes.
etc etc etc


It would be if it's not monitored.
We have a screen, video cameras up above (that we see) and you walk around and make sure people know you're watching.

Olea my mom was a cashier for 15 years she knows how to do this stuff but the bagging area is weighed so you don't steal and thats when is doesn't register light stuff like bread and chives

Those are crappy scales, then.
The only things that people have problems with are cards and other extremely light things.
And I mean extremely.
Ours register if you put your hand on it for one second.

People usually watch as customers use them, to avoid that kind of stuff.

I use it anytime I've only got a few items and am in a hurry.
Usually there are attendants right there to watch what you're doing.
Although I think it's got to be kind of hard to watch everyone when you're surrounded by four different people all at their respective check-outs, and two lines of more people waiting to use them.

Body language tells a whole lot.
You can discern when someone is stealing, more often than not.

yes you can Olea I had to sit through a stupid video when I work in a grocery store even though I worked at Starbucks at the store*glares*

Problem is, even if you think they are stealing, usually you can't do anything about it, especially if you work at major retailers like Wal-Mart and Target. You are not allowed to question them, and you are not allowed to take them. All you can do is smile and provide great guest service.
