@Strange: Well, I think mountain climbing would have been better if I was better prepared. XD Japanese trails don't mess around, but I was only wearing a dress, leggings, and a pair of sneakers. Regardless, I climbed it successfully although I think it took us about 6 hours to go all the way up and down, including breaks. The drawback was feeling very sore for the next few days.

I'm not much of a tour person since I'd rather wander on my own, but I was with a guide last time I was in Kyoto since I went during my home-stay. We got to see some great sights, but Kyoto has so many I don't feel like it was enough. Tokyo, on the other hand, doesn't seem as great as people make it out to be. But maybe that's just my bias since it didn't really feel like Japan because of all of the gaijin and shopping isn't nearly as convenient or cheap as it is in my city. :P

Shishunki 01-04-2011 06:13 AM

@Strange: I'll have to try.

Shi remembers visiting Kyoto. =n= She was sad how modernized it was and all the tourists.
I'm staying in the smaller towns next time.

Ferra 01-04-2011 06:20 AM

@Shi: You can't really fault a major city for becoming modern. What I liked about Kyoto was how well the old and modern meshed together. You could walk down an alleyway lined with little shops that clearly followed the old design and meet up with a modern street lined with modern buildings.

But I do agree that tourists can be kind of a pain. I was pretty shocked at some of the conversations I overheard in the Tokyo subway and the lousy behavior I observed. I don't know why you'd go to another country and then treat the local people like crap and demand that they speak English... It's no wonder foreigners get such a bad reputation.

strange_dreams_512 01-04-2011 06:56 AM

Yeah, I loved that about Kyoto too :D Especially coming out of a shrine and walking up to the post office and taxis. ^^; Ooh, and the mall with the open ceiling was really cool too  Tourists? Pain? Eh? I don't quite know what you're talking about lol. Maybe because my dad's annoyance is hard to beat

Ferra 01-04-2011 07:21 AM

Well I didn't have any trouble with tourists directly, but I did observe/overhear some cringe-worthy conversations and actions. Like a guy on the train trying to teach his friend some basic Japanese since he'd visited Tokyo before, but he didn't even know how to say "わかりません" himself. Or a girl talking obnoxiously loud on the train asking "DOES ANYONE HERE SPEAK ENGLISH?! NO? OK, JUST THE COOL PEOPLE THEN." I was stared at/called out to by a bunch of creepy guys while navigating the trains as well.

strange_dreams_512 01-04-2011 07:30 AM

Ahahahaa yeah. That reminds me of watching this guy in Japanese class (very white/scene with braces) who could care less about studying giving advice to someone who was a little confused on what the teacher had just said.
.... o-o" That train girl though. um ya. ok then. Reminds me of my sister honestly -_- She said when we got back that she'd rather have visited Hawaii so that people would actually understand her. Whereas I personally was just trying to work with what I knew and add onto it xD but she could care less because she was going back to Japan in 10 days. To each his own I suppose. Just.... hopefully with tact. XD

Shishunki 01-04-2011 04:44 PM

Then again Shi was stuck on tour group and had a hard time getting to "normal" places around Kyoto.
Then again, I was also totally with the old stories of Kyoto. I kept feeling like I JUST missed seeing the old capital. ^^'
So the modernization made me sad from a more "Waaah! T.T I wanted to see the older version."
Shi does that often, not just Japan; just to give context.

I did get to travel around Tokyo on my own. I didn't actually encounter any tourists on my little outing to Harajuku. o.o'
Now that I think of it, that's sorta odd.

Ferra 01-04-2011 05:58 PM

Well keep in mind, I was in Tokyo for New Years. XD I think that might explain why there was an overabundance of them. Still, I think I've seen at least a handful of gaijin (not sure if they're tourists or not) every time I've been in Tokyo, even when I was just passing through.

Shishunki 01-04-2011 06:21 PM

That's understandable.

I find it still strange, just for my own thoughts, that there aren't any memories of groups of foreigners.
Even when I was traveling with my group in Tokyo... I think the biggest place for tourists was one of the big Tokyo temples... But even then no memory is really standing out with a big group of foreigners other than my group.
Maybe I was just so enraptured that I wasn't concerned with foreigners. =w='
Silly Shi and her ignoring of people, and preferring historical objects and/or stores.

Ferra 01-04-2011 07:20 PM

There's no problem in blocking them out. I think I'm just a people-watcher by nature, so it's hard for me to not notice. When I'm walking around the town I live in, my eyes will always be drawn to the person/people that stick out of the crowd. But that's not limited to foreigners. I take notice when some is wearing bizarre clothing or are otherwise eye-catching. The guys that stand around advertising host-clubs tend to be especially outrageous looking. XD Their hair is scary huge and styled strangely.

strange_dreams_512 01-04-2011 10:59 PM

Ah yeah lol I'm a people watcher too. I guess the time of year I went there weren't as many tourists as usual? I'm not really sure to be honest.
Scary huge hair? Do you have a picture to show what you mean? XD
Ahh lol there really weren't many tourists that I saw... As far as gaijin, this is what I caught in 10 days xD
African American (2)
Aussies (8)
American (6)
..But maybe that is because my relatives showed me around to the more ... hidden treasures of the towns XD I'm guessing that's it, actually. : o (I really hope my post isn't considered racist

Krazy Kiara- I made a picture to help you understand. (Look at the bottom of the post to see it). It shows you how to use Microsoft IME to type Japanese on your computer. #5 I honestly didn't do much explanation so let me explain here.

If I am on EN (English), and I type arigatou, (meaning thanks), it shows up as arigatou.
However, if I type arigatou while on JP (Japanese), and in Hiragana setting, then it shows up as ありがとう, which is the same thing as arigatou, except in Hiragana instead of Romaji.

Surely you will want to build up your vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure before you start blabbering away with this program. However, if you wish to use this program before you are done learning hiragana and katakana, then it may serve as a tool to assist you in the learning process.

To show what I mean, if you type ka in JP, you will see the actual character か. If you type shi, you will see し. These are the correct characters for those letter combinations. It is important that if you want to learn from this program, you are on Microsoft IME instead of "Japanese". If you select "Japanese" instead, they will be incorrect characters.

Default settings are that pressing space while in JP searches the dictionary for the word you might want to be typing. It searches only for whatever word is underlined. If you want the underline to go away, press enter once.
x before a vowel makes the vowel small.

Try typing a few things and see if they come out correctly?
1. watashi
2. hoshi
3. otouto
4. hikari
5. tadaima
