Arachnaphobia. Spiders. Like...you have no idea.

I was doing laundry in our narrow laundry room, and I had my back to the wall and was pulling towels out of the dryer when this little spider, probably about the size of a nickle ran out from under the dryer. I SCREAMED and probably dented the wall with as hard as I hit it. Last night, my friend came home from Virginia Tech, and we live here in Maryland. We were going into the house through the garage, and this big spider, probably about the size of a half-dollar, ran across the floor. I screamed again and nearly fell over trying to get inside. It's really not good for me to be anywhere near spiders. -shudders-

I have a huge fear of spiders. I don't like snakes or insects either, but spiders are the worst!

That list of phobias is downright creepy.....all the things people can be irrationally afraid of. I really only have 2 true phobias; neither of which is spiders, which a lot of people guess 'cuz I severely dislike them:

The 1st being deep water. No idea why. I've been swimming just as long as I've been walking, and I'm fine with pools, shallow water, and rivers and stuff. But lake or ocean - I freak. My 1st time on a boat was a paddle boat at city park lake. I was 6. I was so terrified I nearly had some sort of panic attack. No idea why. Logically, it doesn't make sense because there shouldn't have been anything to be afraid of. To this day I still freak out on boats and ferries and such. Weirdly I'm fine kayaking and river rafting.

My other phobia is the opposite of heights. I hate being in the downtown area of big cities because of the skyscrapers. Being on the ground looking up makes me feel like my body is shrinking to the size of an ant and I feel dizzy, light-headed, and have no sense of balance. Again, no idea why. My first time in the downtown of a city was when I was 10 and I freaked so much I had to close my eyes and have my mom lead me blindly around. All in all, it sucked.

My experience so far is that deep breathing and as rational as possible thinking are the only ways that work to calm be down when I start freaking.

Has anyone found other ways to calm down?

well having a paper bag with you at all times can be pretty helpful if you ask me since i get panic attacks quite often and they help out alot to calm me down so you might be able to use it.

Oh that list of phobias is really cool.

I can name mine easily, but the simple way, not those extra spiffy words ;)

I am afraid of:
the dark
what I can't see (like someone standing behind me)
heights
deep water
bigger animals than myself (including my beloved horses)
insects
spiders
snakes (there must be glass between me and them or I fear being bitten)

hehehe, thanks for the topic!

I know most people dislike spiders, but every time I see one I'll hallucinate that it's on me, or crawling around when it's not. There was a giant house spider in my room a few weeks ago (never slept in my room for a few days, haha), I left it there until I was able to trap it which was quite a hilarious process; I guess it was blind as fuck, fell off the wall into my suitcase, so I grabbed my hairspray and used up the whole can until it froze, grabbed a cup, zipped up the suitcase until I was sure it was dead. Getting it out is another story :F

Other than that, I don't really have any phobias. XD

I'm the same way about spiders, I'll be be flipping through the National Geographic magazine and then a close up of a spider when I turn the page will literally have me frozen for several minutes with me hardly breathing. Just a couple of weeks ago there was a spider on my wall and it was a bit high up but I didn't have anything to push it down so I lifted my leg to smush it against the wall, I had shoes on, but I ended up pulling the worst muscle in my life and I ended up fainting. Freaked my mom out too and the doctor told me that was really kinda pathetic, I agreed.

My fear though stems from the fact that when I was eight I was bit by a black widow at camp and my entire arm went numb after feeling like I had smashed it into thousands of tiny needles. So now when I'm aware that there is a spider somewhere I either kill it or avoid that area for a couple of days. I haven't slept in my room in weeks now since every time I go in there there is a freaking spider on the wall, near my chair, over my bed, etc.
