Oh God... Please Be In The Walls...

Hey there, GD. I never bother with you, lulz... And how are we today?

I've spent the better half of MY day having anxiety attacks, cool, huh?

So, for numerous, really stupid personal reasons I won't get into, I've had a really, really rocky time, and little to no sleep this week. And wouldn't you know it? Finally falling asleep at 5, and waking again at 6-8 to wake my sister up... I start stirring for good at nine, to this ever so peculiar sound...

At first, I reasoned my cat was into my things, but upon becoming more lucid, remembered he had been let out this morning, and not let back in as of yet. Still, I was sleepy, and began to slip out of consciousness again. And I hear it. That rustling, shifting.

Now, my room is really messy right now because I'm in the process of redoing the whole thing. Trouble is, I don't have shelves/dresser/closet. Just a bunk bed, a computer desk, and a whole lot of boxes I was never able to unpack. So there's a lot of things, well, everywhere. I was going to clean it this weekend, since I completely did the rest of my house last weekend.

So really, this could have been anything, in my sleep deprieved mind. But still, it bothers me. is one of my boxes falling from the cat always shifting his weight on them and causing them to slip? No, that doesn't seem right.

It is louder now. This shifting... Scritching... Scratching... Crawling..

I sit up, and I whimper. My stress has already been through the roof for two weeks straight, and I'm already on edge, I don't need this. I begin praying and reasoning that it is fall, and a squirrel has just gotten in behind our walls/pipes and will crawl out again soon, like always.

So I lay back down, whimpering, covering my head with pillows. But it just won't stop. Louder. And louder.

I crawl over to my light and flick it on, hurriedly climbing back into bed to draw my knees in. And then, out of the corner of my blind eyes (which had me frantically fumbling for my spectacles...), there it was. The biggest, scariest mouse I had ever seen. And my first so up close that hadn't been a... Shall we say, 'gift', from my previous cat.

I highly doubt you have ever seen anyone go from naked to fully dressed and up a flight of stairs so fast. Within minutes I was in my mother's room sobbing as she told me to find the cat and stay upstairs. I didn't even know I was AFRAID of mice, since I always say not to kill them/find them cute enough pets. So I have learned something about myself? =/

Unfortunately, my cat is a lazy ass, and I am sitting in my room armed with a broom because the scurrying sound finally stopped after I turned all the lights on and assaulted the entire basement with febreeze.

Now, I have never, ever had any form of vermin before, except last year when my cat had fleas and we let off a flea bomb. -_-; And in this last month we have had poisonous spiders that I have never seen before (and cannot identify on a spider chart to tell if they are dangerous, but they literally look like tarantulas, and the only species I know like that are wolf spiders, which are not indigenous to this region?), which are everywhere and also make me cry (this presents a bad representation of me... Normally I'm not afraid of anything. Vermin are just my weak spot if I face them *alone* If someone's with me I'm fine.) A centipede, earwigs, pill bugs, and now a mouse?

I've also been plagued with more nightmares than I can count, and my family is extremely out of sorts/divided for the first time ever, in great severity. What is all this negative, negative karma, and how do I cleanse it?

Better yet, how do I get rid of this effing mouse? .___.

Come kill it for me, Mene?

Kaylesha Blackheart 09-10-2009 05:17 PM

a mouse? eek!

Seriously if it's a mouse, use one of them snapping traps you bait with cheese. Only so other pets won't get snapped, too.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 05:20 PM

Eek indeed. xD I've considered getting one of those, but frankly, we've had too many problems with mice stealing the cheese and then the trap snaps without them. D8< Plus I feel guilty killing them. We once bought this sticky tape that was only suppose to hold them, and be humane so you could take them off and set them free. It was completely brutal, and we swore to never do it again.

Jeanie 09-10-2009 06:34 PM

What about one of those box things, stick something in a box with a door and while its nibbling away close it then you can let it out outside.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 06:38 PM

I was reading up on those. :3 I'm just not sure how or where to get them. ><

Jeanie 09-10-2009 06:40 PM

Improvise? :XD Cardboard box and some scissors.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 06:43 PM

XD Maybe.

I'm going to try a suggestion my fiancee found for me. It says to find a deep bucket, and put some food in it, then a ramp to get into the bucket. When the mouse climbs in, knock the ramp away, carry the bucket outside, and let it free. I'm just afraid of getting to close to the mouse because we don't have any deep buckets, just one regular one for laundry detergent stuffs.

Jeanie 09-10-2009 06:45 PM

That wouldn't work for me, I'd probably scream and drop it if the mouse looked at me or, you know, moved.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 06:47 PM

Oh, same. XD But I'm the self-appointed 'man of the house', since we're a home of all females. So I've had to kill all the bugs and spiders too, even though I'm deathly terrified of them. XD;

Part of me just wishes my cat would stop being lazy.

Rusalka 09-10-2009 06:55 PM

I wouldn't come kill it... I'd catch it and let it loose in an open field...

Reminds me at school... a Mouse had somehow gotten in and up into the ceiling tiles... and during lunch it fell from the roof onto a table nearby full of both guys and girls.... and they all screamed and scurried away... I went up and caught the mouse by the tail (not wanting to get bit if it's infected by some disease) while it was helping itself to food..and carried it outside...

I got such weird looks from everyone...

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 06:58 PM

I wish I was as brave as you, Kale. D:

I can hear him scurrying around behind me right now after being in hiding for hours. I'm attempting to stomp around like a giant in noisy boots to scare him off. I don't want to hurt him. >< But usually we only have baby mice if anything the cat drags in, and this wild bugger is about the size of a can of pop.

It wouldn't bother me so much if I was sure it wouldn't do any damage and didn't have any infections.

Jeanie 09-10-2009 06:59 PM

I can't go near bugs, I have to hairspray spiders so they can't move. My cat likes to bring spiders in alive and then release them so she can chase them round, she always loses them though.

Kale, :| I can't believe you touched it. I could never do that.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 07:08 PM

XD One of my old cats played with spiders, to my chagrin. I usually panic and... let me see here...

I've officially set up a box, ramp, and some peanut butter crackers and sunflower seeds. The waiting game begins.

MollyJean 09-10-2009 07:09 PM

Those snap traps work better with peanut butter, they can't just grab it and run and it doesn't fall off. You might try that.

I'm sure the little guy just wants somewhere comfortable to sleep.. get rid of the comfort and clean your room, LOL. While you're moving boxes, give them a shake so if you find the one he's nesting in, you can put it outside.

Never had a problem with mice myself, we always have them in our barn and my cats bring me live ones all the time. They don't bite unless you pick them up.. they don't ATTACK and go at you, so if you can corner it, get a box over it then slide something flat under so you can flip the box with it inside. They're really nothing to be scared of.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 07:13 PM

I know realistically I shouldn't be afraid, but for some reason I can't help it. @[email protected]

I'm going to enlist help and still clean this weekend. The problem is, I honestly have nowhere to put anything as my room is literally a small storage room/pantry turned into a bedroom.

But yeah, I figured he was only here for a nice place to sleep. XD; I just wonder how he even got in, as this is the first sign of him, and my cat spends 24/7 in here, so I would have known sooner otherwise.

He seems to hate it when I turn all the lights and electronic ons. Wonder why.

Jeanie 09-10-2009 07:15 PM

Good luck :XD hope you catch it.

A spider attacked me when I was cleaning the bathroom once, used half a bottle of V05 freeze hair spray before it stopped moving. -_- I was alone, usually I get my mum or Dad to take care of them. Sometimes I hoover them up.

We've never had a mouse before though, at least not one we've found or the cat didn't bring home as a present. My cats like to fit over the mice they catch as well and the one that wins always brings it to me like they caught and they want me to tell them how good they are. :XD

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 07:21 PM

Me too. XD

haha, when my fiancee is here, he's in charge of spider slaying. One time recently, he got angry at me for running out of the shower in a towel and demanding he kill the spider. He moaned about his wet socks (he had to climb in the shower clothed XD) until he saw it was a very LARGE and poisonous looking spider, and killed it for me.

My cat likes to leave moles on our doorstep, but he won't touch teh mouse. D:

One of my older cats when I was very little brought me a new bird every day. ;o; And that was WITH a belled collar.

Jeanie 09-10-2009 07:26 PM

Mine are sneaky, we have bells on their collars but to use the cat flap they need a magnet, they have perfected getting the bell stuck on the magnet. We were considering getting the youngest this collar that I saw that has a little box that makes a noise when they jump but he goes through collars faster than than anything, he had 2 in 24 hours once and had to wait 3 days before I could afford the 3rd.

They only get teeny tiny mice though and that was generally when the house behind ours was having loads of work done after the guy died and it was empty for a few months.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 07:29 PM

Oh, mine goes through collars like crazy, too. -_-; I think he eats them when I'm not looking.

Yeah, my only exposure to mice before this was when my older cat (now no longer with us :( she was becoming senile and very mean (formerly the most affectionate cat EVER) so I had to give her to someone who could take better care of her needs) would bring in babies to teach her kittens how to hunt. I hated that. I'd try so hard to save the mice, but she'd play with them and bat them away from me and kill a lot of them before I could stop her. vov

shinjuuchan 09-10-2009 07:30 PM

Mice are very intelligent and can easily outsmart a traditional spring trap. For a humane way to trap and release it, I would use a cage trap. You could also use an electronic ultrasonic noise maker. It won't affect cats or dogs, but since the mice can hear it, it should keep them away. Also:

Mice are nocturnal and have very limited eyesight. They rely more on their hearing and their sense of smell than they do their vision. So bright lights frighten them, as daytime is the main time they'll be spotted and eaten.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 07:32 PM

Like I said before, I'd like a cage trap. <3 I just don't know how to get them.

Is there any way of mimicking that noise on a computer, or would I need to go to an animal store of some sort? I've been looking for years for some sort of emitter that would keep out spiders and insects, so I'd be able to pick up two of them.

Ah, yeah, I thought that may be why. I unplug everything at night, but the second I plugged my PC in today he took off like a... Well, a rat out of my bedroom. :P

MollyJean 09-10-2009 08:03 PM

Because rodents are scavengers, and it goes against instinct. I mean if you're going to sneak into someones house to steal food, wouldn't you do it at night? Speaking of such, you better make sure there's no food in your room.. if the mouse finds even a little food, he might not leave for a long time.

Just be happy you don't have to deal with opossums and raccoons.. Whenever I go out to the barn in the morning and find a opossum in the refuse barrel I run in the house screaming. It's the eyes....

Wow, that is quite large for a mouse xD Though I guess wild ones do get bigger than ones raised in captivity. Unless it was a rat.. which can be that large or larger. XD

Hehe I've had both mice and rats as pets so I've no qualms with touching them at all. I find them to be overly cute.

Kaylesha Blackheart 09-10-2009 08:11 PM

Duh on my part!

ooh! I just remembered!

There's these mouse repellant sound devices you plug into light sockets in the wall. The sound is silence to us but it drives them out.
They're at Wal-Mart and I think they're about $8-13 for a pair of devices. Look where the laundry soap and home cleaning products are. They'll be next to the ant and wasp sprays.

Ceridwen_Crystaline Ikoda 09-10-2009 08:11 PM

I already checked for food. I need to change my trash bag, but otherwise, there's nothing here.

Actually, we have raccoons quite often. -_-; At every home I've ever lived in. They used to open our trash can, take the garbage out, and delicately place the lid back on. Geniuses, they are. And just this summer, one that was living under our shed for about a week came all the way into our house cause the cat had knocked the screen door onto our porch down (it doesn't lock in, you have to put it up manually.) The raccoon raided my sister's backpack cause no one was in the room. D:

We've also had a family of over ten skunks living under our shed. They were cute though and didn't go in our garbage, so it didn't bother me heavily.

Edit: Kale: Oh, I really hope he's not a rat. T___T;;

I like pet mice/rats. >O>; So much cuter and cleaner. D:

Kaylesha Blackheart: Ah, that's great news! We don't have a car though, so 've just gotta find a ride out to Walmart. >O>; <33 Thanks a lot.
