Inspiration?
Whenever people get inspired in books, in movies or even in real life cases I hear, it's all about ideas. Suddenly someone gets a brilliant idea and they make it come to life before their eyes. That's never happened for me, though. My own inspiration has always been a little less...definite. It's simply an urge to create that overwhelms all else, and once my fingers get behind the keyboard the ideas come naturally. That leads me to the questions I'm asking all of you:
How do you get inspiration? Do you have any control over your inspiration, and how much do you need to write? I'm curious to see. |
I get inspiration from all sorts of weird places. Stories and characters usually come from some weird thing I hear or see. Today, for example, in Human Genetics class we were talking about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. And now I really want to make a character who has that. The same thing goes for Xeroderma Pigmentosa.
As far as the urge to simply create, when I do get that I usually world-build rather than write any definite story. I don't have any control over it, really. I'm not sure how you would. Do you mean like the 100 Themes challenge? I never really considered that the 'inspiration' to write, so much forcing myself to. I don't get really and truly inspired often, when the words just flow out. I need to make myself do it if I'm going to actually get anything done. |
I have this sort of rampant inspiration at least once every few months, and it can last for weeks at a time unless I get it all out. I always try world building, but I'm weak willed. Every time I come up with a good idea I want to immediately get to working on making the entire concept come alive.
I don't quite mean the 100 Themes Challenge. I suppose it does count, but I was wondering if there's any way people can click on and off their inspiration, as easy or hard as it may be. :\ |
Well, if you can turn it on and off then is it really inspiration? I mean, I always thought the definition of inspiration was a kind of 'ah-ha!' moment that wasn't conscious. If you write because you just turned it 'on', wouldn't that be the same as just making yourself work?
That's not to say that if you make yourself work it doesn't come out good. I think it can come out fantastic even if you don't happen to have that 'ah-ha!' moment. |
Inspiration isn't a concrete thing, and it's not something you necessarily need to write, either. I've had plenty of days where I just didn't feel that 'spark of inspiration', but I made myself write, anyway, and it came out fine.

Inspiration can come from just about anything. It can come from a TV show, a movie, a person, or even a coke can. There's all sorts of inspiration out there. Maybe there's a book that has something in it you like. Build a story off that one idea. That's how a lot of my stories and poetry build. I see or hear something that gives me inspiration. It's easy for me to write. I don't have to think all that much. Many people ask me how I get my inspiration. Honestly, I couldn't say. But, just take a look around. There's so much out there in this world that can inspire a person. Just look carefully.

Inspiration...it doesn't happen easily, that's for sure. Once every few months or so I'm so intense on writing something I can't control myself, and I have to get it down- I don't care how.
Whatever the thought is, it just pops into my head. It isn't organized at all and has no real order to it. I force it into submission! >= D But no miraculous event really identifies inspiration for me. It just pops into existence one day. ^^ |
I'm not sure really, half the time I'll be sitting somewhere then all of a sudden I let my mind wonder and then I come across idea's I like, or I'll look at a picture "A picture is worth a thousand words" so I see those words and create from that and when I write it/type it up, I normal go about a page or two before stoping and continuing to let my mind wonder over those ideas

I get my inspiration through my dreams, through conversations with my best friend, and through constant research in a topic i fancy. Sometimes out of nowhere when i'm reading a book, i get a thought that jumps out at me and i have to write it down. I have no control over my inspirations because once i get inspired and i start writing, 10 or more pages until that thought is written down or on my hard drive on the book i am writing.

My inspiration comes from questioning. If there's something you're uncertain of, you can make a story out of that. I mean, think of all the possibilities you can get! Plus, your readers won't be as likely to guess the plot. You know, if you can guess the plot, the story's going to be pretty boring. So yeaah, question, question, question!

i think music is probably my biggest inspiration. I might say happiness is, though. Any time i'm in a really great mood, ideas just seem to flow and form into something almost tangible for me. So I use music, books, movies, manga, anime, and tons of other things to make me happy, then the inspiration comes.

I get insperation through alot of stuff. If i see a rp I like i'll write my own story about what happens there. Or if i read a book with a plot i really like I'll write a story where something to that effect happens. Its more likely for me to get insperation from dreams, or nightmares, i have, exotic people i see, friends, family, or daydreaming in class. I also look at anima pictures and i come up with an idea for a story. Just yesterday i started writing one using two anima pictures i saw. It helps me to have pictures of the people or ideas of what i want them to look like so you can know what people would think if they saw them. It makes everything seem more realistic.

I have absolutely no control on what inspires me.
At all. I'll randomly get inspired by just about anything. On Tuesday, I was sitting in my Astronomy lecture and the layer of the sun that we were talking about inspired me to create a new character with the same name. |
I don't have any control about what can inspire me either. Anything and everything can inspire me.
Yesterday, I got an amazing idea for a novel/fanfic based on the 'Writer's Block' on LJ. What I find inspires me the most though, is music. I listen to the lyrics find a meaning behind them and write based on how I interpreted the song. After reading amazing works of literature or watching fantastic movies, I feel inspired to write as well. |
Inspiration comes to me in all different forms. I have a mindless job so I'm doing a lot of thinking during the day (and it sucks because I don't have anything to write on) I read alot and get small sparks of inspiration from them. Also, my friends will say something interesting and I run with it. I also like art so I'll come up with stories from a picture I see.

This may seem weird but i usually get my inspirations from my dreams that i have, as well as books or video games i have read. Most of the time things pop into my head and i just not them down at try to make them into stories latter on going into more detail etc. Iam a beginner at writing so at the moment iam doing short story's 3-4 pages worth but my writing is big so it ends up one page or two on word.
