Apparently inbetween my extreme moments of Scottish (which is where I am from) I sound and use Americanisims so I will use phrases and things from teh US rather than here. I am not major like calling a tap a fawcet or things like that. Just the little things like pronounceations, rather than Stupid I say it Stoopid and I use phrases like awesome :yes:

As long they are willing to learn the language and respect the culture, not just do it because they saw it in an anime. I am a big anime fan myself but I've never done any of that though.

And it's offensive to me when someone comes up to me and thinks they know how to speak Chinese and says "ching-chong-chang". I usually mess with them and tell them that they just said "I am a big idiot" or some equally harsh insult.

I think it's only offensive if it's being used incorrectly, because it is showing a person's blatant ignorance and disregard for the cultural significance of a word. I wish we could force every weeaboo on the internet to read and memorize this before they start tacking on random suffixes to everyone's names.

I think it's a case-by-case thing. For example, when I'm talking about Camui Gackt I will usually say "Gackt-sama" in keeping with the theme of respect and admiration for a Japanese person. But if I'm talking about Billie Armstrong of Green Day or Davy Spillane, who is from Ireland, I'm not going to say "Billie-sama" or "Spillane-san" because culturally it just doesn't make sense. Furthermore, as my heritage is Irish and not Japanese, I refer to my boyfriend as "mo chroi" (Irish Gaelic, loosely "my love") and not "James-kun" as I feel it's disingenuous to my own heritage and just kinda stupid.

I am, however, guilty of using a lot of UK slang, mainly just because it sounds better than American slang to me, and cursing is a little more satisfying too. I'm also guilty of cursing in 'Firefly Chinese', which I know is horribly mispronounced, but it's reserved for when I'm feeling ironic.

I use Japanese words at times.

But I took Japanese for three semesters. That counts for something right?

But I rarely use the suffixes/honorifics except in jest every now and then. One of my nicknames is Robu-chan.

But in general, I try not to use too much of something from outside my culture/language, but I like incorporating Japanese culture a little. (It is hard to do for me-I know very few Asians and none of them closely.)

It really just depends on who is using it. If all the Japanese they use is kawaii and the honorific/suffixes-they annoy me, but if they actually know some Japanese it doesn't. This goes for any language or culture.

But of course I won't tell anyone else to stop-if they want to look weird or stupid or whatever they can. It isn't going to be me looking stupid you know?

It does not bother me in the least. It is their mouth and they may use it, if its offending me of course I am going to do something. They have the freedom to look like a complete idiot if they choose using words that they do not comprehend, its not really affecting me

It does annoy me though when people start complaining about "culture this and culture that" if it means that much then stop complaining to me about it and go educate someone

It doesn't bother me at all. I think it's pretty typical. I mean, America is a mixing pot or tossed salad or whatever the hell they want to call it. That's going to happen. I think it was said best here:

Those people who go "KAWAII!!!" or "(insert name)-CHAN/SAN/SAMA" like some squealing fangirl or just because they hear it in an anime, gives those who study Japanese seriously (like me) a bad name. Because others generally associate studying Japanese with those people. I am a big anime fan and everything but those people are just.....UGGH!

Humm... It doesn't bother me when people use honorifics toward each other, I had a friend that used chan on me. I just see it as a nickname...no biggie.

I rather like adding the Uber (ubercool, ubersad) to words... and all the tastic (craptastic, sleeptastic) words. So again, I just chalk it up to slang, which is in its own way, a way to make new words to fit what you are thinking.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE to use bleeding...buggering...and BLOODY...so um yeah...I am guilty too.

But, what truly will drive me straight up a wall faster than anything else is when some 16 year old boy, comes up to me, at my job, and calls me "miss". I was using the MS title before he was even born. Plus I am married, and OLDER than him by YEARS.

For some reason, calling all women "miss" around Buffalo is considered polite...sigh....Just wanna smack them upside the head...Yeah really I feel that strongly about it. At work I am a Maam, thank you very much. Or, you can read my bloody name tag...:headdesk:

Well I don't normally speak any of it. I don't call my friend Veronica, Ronnie-Chan or anything, but when we write I use V-chan. My friend Ali, is A-chan. I'm D-chan, and my sis is H-chan. But I don't walk around calling them that. And I hardly ever use a japanese/german word unless it comes to mind at some point. I only use my skills at sushi resteraunts when the employ's talk about something and a friend turn to me and says "What did they say?" Because me and my sis cracked up laughing. I don't remember now what they said but when we repeated it in english the servers looked scared for their lives.

And i use yiddish a bit... even though im not jewish... and a bit of celtic, often some german, but i am part german so i can get away with it.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of that!
I do it with a lot of French words and phrases, little bits just get mixed in with what I'm saying.
I don't do it intentionally, though.
My husband spent a lot of his childhood in France, so he speaks fluent French, and he often mixes French and English together, so I find that I unintentionally pick it up.
It's like when your friends use a new slang word and before you know it, you find yourself saying it, too.

I am guilty of putting Japanese words into my speech sometimes. But I've always done my best to do my research before using them, because I don't want to offend someone. I think that if you are going to be using another language do the research first and learn how to pronounce the words. I had this history professor in college that every time he said a Japanese word (because we were learning that area of the world), I cringed.

By the way, AldreaOrcinae I think it's funny that you should mention the 'Firefly Chinese' because I am watching Firefly right now. :D
