Why.. why, why, WHY, must college be so difficult?
Okay, so, I'm currently a high school senior.. I don't make the best grades, but I push myself hard. I do all right. I'm not in the top 10-percentile or anything, but like I said, I do okay. My standardized test scores are pretting effing amazing.. Buh my college plans are completely shot now. (well, maybe not completely, but it's going downhill)
I was planning on going to the International Academy of Design and Technology here in Orlando for Marketing and Advertising, and that appeared to be all fine and dandy. Program based solely on what I'm interested in, okay tuition, easy-peasy.. And then I read the reviews, and now I am 100% turned off from the school. That leaves me on the nice search of finding a new college! And I'm worried. Haven't taken SAT once yet, though I hope to sign up for the November one.. which also brings up another problem: my procrastination got me past the deadline to sign up, so with late fee included, it is now $68 to take it -- AND I DONT HAVE THE MONEYYY. So, to make a possibly longer story short.. I am absolutely freaking OUT. I don't know how to pay for SAT, though I do have a job, I don't know what college to go to, and.. I'm just freaking out. ]: Anyone else run into a similar problem revolving around college? Haha. |
Well...it sounds like you're having quite the tough time of it right now. I actually do understand you're troubles, at least a little bit, though thank goodness, I never had to worry about the money aspect of the whole thing.
Before I begin, I would like to say that, despite how much it may seem to be right now, the world is not ending. So, take a few deep breaths and try to relax a little...you'll be able to get through this, probably with fewer bumps and bruises than you think. Now for some words of "wisdom" coming from a current master's level student... Try not to panic so much about the time constraints. Believe it or not, a lot of schools will accept applications until the very last second. So even if you send one in "too late," it's very possible that you will be accepted anyways. Next...picking a school is going to be the most difficult part of this whole thing. It's always very disappointing when a school does not live up to your expectations, but there is good news: You're not stuck at whatever school you choose. Go ahead and pick a school that will at least meet your most basic needs. If that means, it's a local university or community college, then do it. Spend your first year there taking core classes (the general requirements) and knock them out, because you're going to have to take them no matter where you go. When you're not studying, do your research...figure out what schools are going to meet your needs best. Your choice should especially be influenced by the subject you are wanting to concentrate in. By the end of that first year, maybe you'll have a better idea of where you want to go...or you may decide you want to stay right where you're at. Whenever you decide what school you want to go to (be it a permanent or temporary thing) and call them. Explain your situation with the SAT, etc. to them. Most of them will probably tell you to go ahead and apply for the school and to have the testing center send them your scores whenever you do finally take it. That being said...take the test when you can. So you don't have the money right now...then take it when you do have the money. Save up a little extra money until you can afford the test. And be studying for it in the meantime. And if worse comes to worse, it's still not going to be the end for you. If you have to take a year off of school, spend that time working, researching, weighing your options, etc. Also...I don't know your family/friends/etc. situation, but I would advise you to go and talk to anybody you can about this. They may have some more words of advice for you, and they may know a way that they (or somebody they know) can help you. Hope this helps some! If you have any more questions, please let me know. I'll be happy to help if I can. :) |
I think the main reason why I was freaking out, at that time, was because I was tired. XD but it still all I pretty crazy. I do really, really appreciate your reply; it has shed sone light on some things I need to work out. Thank you! ^^

No problem! And yeah, being tired can definitely cause things to seem a lot worse than they actually are. Be prepared for a lot of that when you're at college...the stress of school along with the lack of sleep I'm sure you'll experience along with most every other college student can cause a lot of "freak-out" moments. Just know that it won't last forever and that you'll be okay in the end. ^_^

CastellaStar is right, everyone has those freak-out moments (gawd knows how bad I did). But if you don't want to take off a year, like how some people like staying in the swing of things for school, try looking at community college. It's a great and cheap way to get your General education courses out of the way and transfer to a college you do prefer.
And as for choosing the college that you really want to stick, I suggest visiting. I would have never known about the amazing program they offer for my major if I didn't visit the school I'm going to now. At first I only applied because they had the major I wanted and kept it as a backup school, having my heart set completely on another one. But when I visited the two, I fell in love with the one I'm at now and can't even imagine being at the other one. But one thing to be wary off applying and even in college:DEADLINES. They have no mercy when something is due, whether it be money or a document they need. They can be very anal about having something turned in, and they get 50 million sob stories on being late each day. Highly unlikely they will listen to your story unless you have some magical power. But overall, good luck. It's a headache reeling process but worth every minute of it. |
i am sorry. i went through that too. applying for college is very stressful. i was lucky to have a very talented guidance counselor who helped me through it. is there another time you can take the test? they offer several throughout the year. or what about the ACT? i want to say that getting in is the hardest part about college, and it might be. it wasnt for me. i am going to a very challenging college. i am not sure if i am allowed to ask you where you are planning on going or not.... anyways. i hope everything works out for the best. good luck.

life in general is difficult, hun.
this is just the beginning good luck with everything |
I got accepted into college 2 weeks before I went, and I picked out all my classes with a week before I began to attend. xD I've never taken the SAT (I'm in the midwest, so I took the ACT) so I don't know what to tell you there, though.
All I can say is: Don't worry so much! It seems like something that's a huge deal, but it's really not. Most colleges have a sign-up-date requirement of about a month before the classes start, so depending on the college you may want to send in your application by the beginning of July or August, so you've got plenty of time. It's really a lot easier than you're making it seem. xP I'm currently attending a community college rather than a university so I can get my requirements out of the way. Have you considered that? It's a lot cheaper than a university, but still they're good quality and you can have much more lenient hours. The only problem is that you'll have to get your own place to live, but let's face it: my college tuition here is about 2,500 bucks, and at a university it would be at least 5,000 dollars more expensive. It's up to you on what you decide to do, of course. Just thought I'd try to make a suggestion to help. x3 |

That's a poem on the back of my old key chain.:sarcasm: It may seem corny, but I found that it really helped when I was at the edge. This may not give you advice on how to get into your suitable college, but it's perseverance to never quit. Success takes time and hard work. Not every can become a successor, but a successor can come from anyone. So read the other replies to hear hints how how to success, and read mine to help you strengthen your will to success. |
Yeah, I was definitely making it a bigger deal than it was at the time I posted this. The stress of that and multiple other things got to me. I think my options have, however, changed a bit. Instead of doing stuff at a university like that, I may just go to more of an academy -- where I don't have to do all the undergrad stuff. :3
Now, I just need to find one in my price range.. @ Cyraus // Haha! That's so cute, but it really doesn't have an uplifting feel. I may print that out and stick it places.. :D Thanks for introducing me to it~ |
