"He dresses weird!"
"Why does he not talk to me?!"
"He's looking at me strange!"
"He's not looking at me at all!"
"Oh, god, look at that scar on his face!"
People generally target people who aren't like them. Whether it be for the scar on your face or that you just plain dressed weird, people always targeted the people who stood out. ...And most of the time, the people who are targeted don't suspect anything. Such was true for the young man that night. At a first glance, some people thought he was a woman, but he was too tall to be one and he was wearing pants. Perhaps he was targeted most for his dark skin and curly hair. It made people whisper 'gypsy' behind his back. The human machine was a wicked thing.
"Where'd you see that weirdo go?"
"He was just passed the smoke shop! He's near an alley!"
"Ahahaha. Perfect~"
It wasn't that the man was deaf. It was that he didn't seem to care. This led a group of friends to following him around at nightfall. The worst part about it was that he didn't even make a sound as he was drug back into an alley with a gag over his mouth.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 08:04 PM

Whistling a tune that his mother had taught him when he was little, Paulie walked briskly down the main street. The young man had blond hair that went a bit past his shoulder that was being held back by a long strip of cloth as a head band. The blond was wearing tight black pants and a white tunic with a black vest, and a pair of black boots that went to about his mid thigh. He had a cloth bag slung over his shoulder that was mostly full.

As he walked, he saw a group of guys dragging someone into a nearby alley. The blond’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, and sensing trouble was going on, he quickly followed the group to the alley. Waiting just outside the entrance of the alley, he waited to see what would happen before he intervened.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 08:09 PM

There was the sound of gasping and laughter. The man was now backed in a corner, and one of his attackers had kicked him in the stomach. For a few moments, his attacker allowed him to lay there reeling in pain before pulling him up by his hair. He looked bewildered and tears were brimming around his right eye but not the left.
"Why won't you say anything?! Why aren't you crying out in pain already?!" one of his attackers yelled at him. "CRY ALREADY! ...There he goes... Jake, you take care of it from here."
Tears were streaming down the right side of the man's face, and his attackers only laughed louder at that.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 08:18 PM

A snarl of rage rumbled in Paulie’s throat as he heard what the people were saying in the alley to the person they had dragged in. Setting down the bag, he stepped out to the entrance of the alley where he could be seen, “Why don’t you guys just leave him alone?” he growled softly, the look on his face showing clearly that he was pissed.

The one who had kicked Lucci turned around at the sound of the intruder. At the sight of the blond, a look of disdain appeared on his face, “Hey. You’re one of those gypsies that are camped outside of town. I saw you in town stealing. What does it matter to you what we do to him?”

The blond’s face hardened at what the man said, growling softly, choosing to ignore the comment about what he had been doing in town, because he hadn’t been stealing, “It matters because I’m not the type to just sit around while you attack someone who’s unable to defend themselves. You boys not man enough to fight someone who can actually fight back? Have to go and pick on someone who can’t defend themselves to make yourself feel big, right?” He sneered. These were the type of people he hated the most. Ones who picked on defenseless people.

This caused the other three to whirl around and glare at Paulie. The one called Jake growled, “Who are you to say shit like that to us, you asshole?! I aught to kick your ass for saying that!”

A smirk slowly made its way onto Paulie’s face at the other man’s words. He hadn’t had a fight with anyone in a while now, and he was fairly sure he was out of practice. A fight would suit him just fine, “I’d like to see you try.” He said in a voice that almost sounded like a purr. The blond’s stance changed in a matter of seconds to a fighting stance, “Ladies first...” Paulie said mockingly.

Snarling angrily, Jake charged the blond, a knife now in his hand. He had been planning on Lucci, but he decided he could use it now. As he got close to Paulie, he went to slash at him with the knife.

With the swiftness of a cat, Paulie had the knife out of Jakes hand in a matter of seconds, and he quickly delivered a punch to the other man’s face, putting all of his strength into the punch. Right after the punch to the face, Paulie then kicked Jake in the stomach, sending the other man flying backwards a few feet. Jake was now unconcious, and probably wouldn’t be waking up for a while.

A sly smirk now playing on Paulie’s lips, he turned his attention to the other two guys. That had been too easy.

At the sight of their fallen friend, the other two guy’s eyes widened in horror. Quickly, they picked up Jake and made a run for it out of the alley without a word.

Scoffing at the other two’s cowardice, Paulie slowly walked into the alley, Jake’s knife still in his hand after relieving him of it, and walked up to the one on the ground. Kneeling down in front of him and gently placed his hand on his arm, “Are you alright?” The blond asked softly, a look of concern on his face.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 08:26 PM

Lucci stared up at his saviour in awe, his hair spilling around him like a thick inky veil. His lips formed words, but no sound came. Appearing distraught, he shifted and pulled something out of his pocket and quickly scribbled on it. He didn't seem to be aware that his face was bleeding and that his hair was partially sticky in his own blood. He showed Paulie a doodle of what looked like to be bread and a glass of water. "I'm..." His voice faded before he could even properly thank Paulie. He appeared even more distressed now.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 08:41 PM

Blinking in surprise at the doodle that was shown to him. Eyes widening in realization that the man in front of him was probably a mute, he examined the doodle a bit closer. Bread and water. That must mean that he was hungry. After a moment he went and examined the other’s face more closely and saw blood. Shit. Slowly standing up, he offered his hand to the other man, “Come on. It looks like you’re bleeding. And you’re hungry, too. I’ll bring you back to the caravan where my medical supplies are, and I’ll get you all fixed up. And dinner should be ready by the time we get back.” He finally said, a warm smile that he rarely showed to people outside of the traveling show appearing on his face.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 08:50 PM

Lucci stared uncertainly at Paulie's hand before slowly accepting it, his scarred hand shaking. He was becoming frustrated. He wanted to thank this man, but his voice wouldn't cooperate. He couldn't even make a sound in frustration because of how little he exercised his larynx. His oddly bright eyes seemed to brighten further at Paulie's smile, and his lips moved again. His eyebrows furrowed for a moment, and he bowed his head. He slid his pad and pencil back into his back pocket. He needed to stop shaking, but he didn't know how. "Th...Thank..." His voice crackled even worse.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 08:56 PM

Blinking in surprise at hearing the man in front of him speaking, Paulie helped him up. After a few moments of trying to figure this out, he decided that he shouldn’t worry about that right now and get him bandaged up and fed before anything else, “You’re welcome.” The blond finally said, “My name is Paulie, by the way. What’s your name?” He continued as he began to walk out of the alley with the other man, picking up the sac he had left by the entrance. He needed to get him back to the camp as quickly as possible. As they walked, every so often he would discretely glance at the man beside him just to make sure he was still alright as they walked.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 09:02 PM

Lucci seemed more content now. That'd been the first time he'd spoken years, but he felt that this man was worth breaking his vow of silence. A smile tugged at his lips before his hair covered it. He seemed to become distant after that, and he didn't look at the other man after. His throat made a buzzing sound at the other's question. He pulled his pad out of his pocket and began flipping pages until he found the right one. He tapped Paulie's shoulder to get his attention. 'Lucci.' He'd written the pronunciation under it just in case.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 09:15 PM

Looking down at the pad of paper he was being shown, a small grin appeared on his face, “Lucci.” He said after reading the paper, “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Lucci.” The blond continued, looking up at the other man. They were almost outside of town, so that meant they were about 5 minutes away from the camp now. The blond had other questions he wanted to ask, but he didn’t want to seem like he was being nosey. Lucci didn’t seem the type who opened up to people that easily, so having some complete stranger asking him personal questions might come across as weird to him. So the blond kept quiet and just focused on getting to the camp.

As they continued walking, Paulie suddenly saw some fires glowing in the distance, and a broad grin appeared on his face, “We’re almost there.” He said at the sight of the fires in the distance, pointing to them as he spoke, “We’re probably going to get bombarded by kids when we get near the camp. Just thought it would be good to warn. If you’re not familiar with these kids, then when they come running at you, it looks like they’re coming to attack you.” The blond continued, amusement apparent in his voice.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 09:29 PM

Lucci only nodded in response, but his faint smile was visible. He appeared uncertain and unsure of everything he did, but that could have been that he was shy. He was certainly hiding under his hair enough. While they were walking, he seemed to be messing with it, running his fingers through it and pulling it back in a low ponytail. Inky wisps of curly hair escaped enough to cover his scarred eye. He perked up as they neared the camp and even more and what Paulie said next. Pulling out a pencil, he wrote down something and handed the pad to Paulie. "I love kids," it said.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 09:48 PM

Reading the pad when Lucci handed it to him, Paulie chuckled, “That’s good to hear, because these kids tend to get very interested in outsiders. They’ll probably start barraging you with questions and a million other things.” The blond replied, the grin still on his face.

As they grew closer to the camp, there was suddenly a squeal of happiness that was obviously made by a child, and then a girl who looked to be nearly 10 with a full head of almost waist length black hair that was flying behind her as she ran, barreling into the blond and wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, “Paulie!!!” She exclaimed happily, grinning up at Paulie with a bright smile.

Nearly having the wind knocked out of him when the girl barreled into him, after a moment, Paulie grinned back down at her, wrapping his arms around her to hug her back, “Aaah! Nessa! And how’s moi petit poisson?” The blond said jovially, letting go of her after a moment and playfully messed up her hair.

Giggling softly at the treatment, Nessa finally noticed Lucci standing near them. Blinking curiously at the newcomer, she finally looked back up at Paulie, “Paulie...who’s this?” She questioned, a look of confusion on her face, “And how did he get all cut up? He’s bleeding.” She questioned as she let go of Paulie and walked up to Lucci, concern now apparent in her expression.

“Well, Nessa. This is Lucci. I met him in town on my way back here. He was getting beat up by some other people in town, and I stopped them. I brought him back here to bandage up his wounds.” Paulie replied, running a hand through his hair.

Suddenly, a group of kids ranging in age from young children to kids that were probably somewhere between 10 and 13 came running up to them. There were about 10 kids all together, all of them greeting Paulie and then bombarding

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 09:53 PM

Lucci stared down at the children with no expression on his face. He blinked a few times as his vision started hazing, and he bit his bottom lip for a second as he swayed. He latched onto Paulie's arm and hid his face. It'd been so long since anyone even spoke to him, let alone looked at him with a concerned expression. It was overwhelming, and his shyness kicked in. He creeped behind Paulie and hid behind him, making an adorable squeaking noise. But he still wanted to talk to them... Blushing a violent red, though his skin helped hide it a bit, he reached in his backpocket for his pad and began writing something down for the children to read. He tapped Paulie on the shoulder when he was done and slid the pad over his shoulder. "It's nice meeting you. I don't mean to be impolite... I just don't talk," was what the pad said.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 10:05 PM

Chuckling softly at Lucci’s sudden shyness, Paulie took the pad of paper and read what Lucci wrote to the kids, “It’s nice meeting you. I don’t mean to be impolite, I just don’t talk.” The blond repeated, “Alright, kids...go back to your parents for now. I have to treat his wounds, and then he’s having dinner with us. You can ask him all the questions you want then, alright?”

With a resounding ‘awwwwwwwwwww’ of disappointment from the kids, they all unwillingly did as Paulie said and turned to head back to where their respective parents were to have dinner.

Nessa turned to head back as well, but Paulie gently put his hand on her shoulder, “How about you help me treat Lucci’s wounds?” He asked.

A small grin appeared on the young girls face, and she quickly went to action, “Alright. Let’s go get you fixed up, Lucci.” She said, suddenly taking Lucci’s hand and leading him towards Paulie’s wagon where his medical supplies were.

Paulie followed the two of them, staying close to Lucci as they headed towards his wagon. Once they were there, he pushed open the door and stepped inside, motioning for the other two to follow him. The inside of the wagon had a medium sized chest, a small number of books, a wooden box that was about 3 feet long a 2 feet wide and half a foot thick, a small roll up mattress that was rolled up in a corner, and a few other odds and ends. Other than that, the wagon didn’t have much in it. Quickly getting to work, Paulie unrolled his mattress and motioned for Lucci to sit on it.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 10:10 PM

Lucci made a disagreeing noise at what Paulie had said, but the mere thought of dinner made his mouth water and his body feel disoriented. His stomach growled in protest, and he bowed his head in embarrassment as he took back his pad. He didn't take into account that his dizziness was due to a few reopened wounds on his torso. He couldn't even feel them bleeding through his shirt, and none of the blood showed through his shirt either because of it being black. He squeaked at Nessa taking his hand, but he allowed her to lead him to the wagon. He bit his bottom lip at the other's command, but he obeyed after sighing softly. He was afraid he'd fall asleep right there. If someone examined him further, they would've been able to see the dark circles under his eyes that even his naturally dark complexion couldn't conceal.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 10:27 PM

Grabbing the wooden box, Paulie slowly scooted so he was near Lucci’s head and unlatched the box, opened it, and pulled out a cloth. He began to dab lightly at the wound that was on Lucci’s forehead. Looking up at Nessa again, he smiled at her, “Could you get a bucket of hot water for me, Nessa?” The blond asked, smiling at her kindly.

Nodding in response to Paulie’s question, Nessa quickly got up and headed out the door of the wagon.

Once Nessa had left, Paulie set down the cloth, “Lucci...I’m going to need to take off your shirt so I can make sure you aren’t bleeding anywhere else.” The blond said softly, “Are you okay with that?” He asked, locking eyes with Lucci so he could gauge Lucci’s reaction to this.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 10:39 PM

Lucci made a strangled noise at the other's question. His seeing eye widened, and his eyebrows furrowed in discontent. The other could probably see it now. His repulsive scar. Everyone seemed to hate it and everyone discriminated him for it. He didn't want Paulie to see any more scars than he needed to. How long was he even staying? He didn't want to intrude, but at the same time, he didn't want to appear impolite. "I...can do that....on my own... Can't I?" His voice was surprisingly deep but also raspy from little use. He was blushing again, too. He gnashed his teeth and looked away from Paulie. "Or at least...let me take it off myself..." He didn't want to see the look in Paulie's eyes at all his scars. He didn't want to feel the other's eyes judging him. He hated this. Shakily, he began unbuttoning his shirt, revealing one of his scars automatically, the pale skin a shocking contrast against his normally dark complexion. Three buttons down and bruises began blossoming up, and then the opened wounds began revealing themselves. He inhaled sharply at seeing them, but otherwise made no other sound. He made the decision of keeping his shirt mostly on after he'd reached the final button. He was deathly thin, yet also muscular. Scars marred his muscular chest along with several fresh bruises. "You don't need to see my back...," he mumbled.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 11:21 PM

Nodding at what Lucci said about taking his shirt off himself, Paulie casually watched Lucci unbutton his shirt, not watching in a way that would be classified as staring. The blond took in the sight in front of him. Lucci was absolutely gorgeous, even with the scars that were on his body. It wasn’t as if he was feeling sexually attracted to Lucci, the observation that the other man was beautiful was more of him appreciating the beauty of another person. At Lucci telling him Paulie didn’t need to check his back, he gave the other man an encouraging smile. He could tell that Lucci probably had more scars on his back and didn’t want the blond to see them, but he needed to check them, “I’m not going to judge you for anything. I need to see your back to make sure that you don’t have any open wounds there.” He finally said, giving Lucci an encouraging smile. Paulie prided himself in how he could put people at ease when he was working on them, so he hoped that this natural ability of his could put Lucci at ease enough to let him help him. He saw the open wounds on Lucci’s chest, and he just wanted to cover all of his bases and make sure Lucci didn’t have any other cuts.

Lolliscythe 10-11-2009 11:31 PM

"No... It's ugly...," Lucci mumbled. "You'd kick me out for being a freak!" You don't have any scars, do you? No, your skin's so nice...so...normal... You're too... He made a discerning noise at what he was thinking. What was he even saying?! He didn't want for Paulie to see his ugliness. Others, he never cared about, but this man... He stared at Paulie's face for a few moments, the other's smile killing most of his thoughts. ...wonderful... You're too wonderful. Of course, when he understood the feelings behind his thoughts, he was more than a bit terrified. He nodded slowly at what the other said, and, bowing his head, he pulled his shirt the rest of the way off. His hair covered most of his back, so he had to pull his hair up by the ponytail. Indeed, there was a wound reopened on his back. His back was much more heavily scarred than his chest. It was almost completely white. Cigar burns dotted his shoulders, among other things. He felt ashamed of himself and just how monstrous he appeared. ...But maybe it was better that way, for Paulie to think of him as such. He was pretty damn sure that he had a crush on a man he barely even knew, and it was maddening. He could stomp that down after he left, though. It wasn't like he was going to stay for a while. No, he figured he'd stay for the night at the most.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-11-2009 11:49 PM

At Lucci’s words, Paulie had to keep himself in check to keep his expression from showing the sadness he felt at what the teenager said. Who had hurt Lucci so much and made him think so little of himself. Keeping his expression from showing this sadness, his expression unreadable, the blond locked eyes with Lucci, “Kick you out? Just for being different? I’m not that shallow.” He replied, finally turning to the wooden box again and started looking through it for something, “I’ve been treated terribly by people my whole life just because of the way I live. I won’t put someone through that same treatment I’ve had to endure.” He continued. When Lucci complied and took off his shirt, the blond scooted so he was behind the other man. Almost instantly, he saw the open wound on his back and all the old scars. A small smile played on his lips, “This isn’t so bad. People have called you a freak because of this?”

As Paulie was examining Lucc’s back, Nessa came back into the wagon with a bucket filled with steaming water, “I got the water, Paulie.” The young girl said walking up to the other two in the wagon, setting the water next to Lucci and Paulie.

Looking up at Nessa when she walked up, a smile appeared on Paulie face, “Excellent! Thank you, Nessa.” he said, happily, taking the bucket and picking up the cloth he had been using earlier. The blond dipped the cloth into the water and lightly started dabbing the open wound on Lucci’s back.

Lolliscythe 10-12-2009 12:05 AM

"I look like a monster...," Lucci mumbled. He pushed his bangs out of his face, revealing the long scar over his left eye. "And I'm half-blind." His voice was growing increasingly raspier, threatening to die again. The hatred he felt for himself was clear in the tone he used. His eyebrows furrowed at the other's words. "Everyone else has..." He looked away in shame. Damn it. He spoke too fast and didn't think nearly enough. It made him want to stop talking entirely. He shot Paulie a bemused look at what he'd said. "My back's almost completely white. I've seen it, so don't try humouring me." He tensed at Nessa's voice, and he fell silent. He was just now becoming comfortable with Paulie. He didn't feel like opening up to a second person. His gaze fell upon the bucket of water, and he made a face at it. He tensed even further when he remembered the kind of pain water gave wounds. He bowed his head and fisted his hands, grinding his teeth and thinking up a prayer. His head was becoming woozy again, and he had to do everything he could to cover it up. He didn't want even more pity from this man. Despite gasping in pain, the heat was welcoming, and he nearly dozed off for a moment at it. He was cold from walking in the rain for so long.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-12-2009 12:21 AM

“I don’t think you look like a monster. And so what if you’re half blind? There is a girl in this caravan who is fully blind. She has been blind since she was born. You’re not a monster, you’re just different, and there are quite a few people in this world who can’t handle people who are different from themselves.” Paulie replied, continuing to dab the wound until he was happy that it was blood free, “I’m not bothered by people who are different. Because I am part of a group of people who are feared and hated by many other people because we’re different ourselves.” The blond continued, standing up and moving so he was facing the other man and proceeded to dab at the open wounds on Lucci’s chest after he had dipped the cloth in the water again.

Noticing that Lucci had closed himself off when she came into the room, Nessa smiled slightly, “I’ll leave you two alone. I’ll make sure to get you and Lucci some food, alright?” She said as she turned and walked towards the door to the wagon and leaving.

“Alright.” Paulie replied, continuing to dab at the wounds on Lucci’s chest gently.

Lolliscythe 10-12-2009 12:33 AM

Lucci couldn't say anything to that. Tomorrow, this conversation wasn't going to mean anything, right? No, this was pretty much irrelevant. He kept his face bowed and didn't make eye contact with Paulie when he was facing him. His gaze darted to Nessa, and he raised an eyebrow at her from under his hair. She was really perceptive for a child... He looked away again and kept his gaze at his feet. That wouldn't matter later. It was comforting to be talked to and not at for a change, but he assured himself that he shouldn't get used to it. He kept his face passive, and it only wavered for a second as he grimaced in pain at his wounds being cleaned.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-12-2009 01:09 AM

At seeing Lucci grimice in pain, Paulie gave him a sympathetic smile, “Sorry.” He said softly, doing his best to speed up cleaning up the younger man’s wound. Once the blond had Lucci’s wounds all cleaned up, he went back into the wooden box and opened it, pulling out a long strip of cloth. Taking the cloth, he wrapped the cloth around Lucci’s body around the areas that there were open wounds. When he was finally done wrapping the cloth around Lucci’s torso, he picked up the younger man’s shirt and handed it to him, “All done. Now, let’s go get some dinner. You’re probably starving.” He said, smiling warmly at Lucci as he stood up.

Lolliscythe 10-12-2009 01:29 AM

Just what he needed. More sympathy. Lucci sighed in contempt at himself. He slid his shirt back on and hastily buttoned it back up, almost skipping a hole out of his nervousness. His eyes flickered up at Paulie before quickly looking away. He was closing himself back up again, and at the others words, he realised another thing. Those children were going to ask about him... He had the urge to pull at his hair, but he had enough self-control to keep his hands at his sides. "Yes...," he mumbled. He shakily stood up, and he stared at Paulie for a few moments. He...didn't know where he was going. Half of him wanted to bolt, but he knew he didn't have enough strength to do so. He was still dizzy. "Um..." He revealed none of his troubles in his face nor his voice. He came off very distant now, and he liked it that way.
