Learning Japanese.. A little help? :P

Not sure if this topic can go here. Sorry ~.~;;;
And I kind of scanned to look for a topic like this but I didn't spot it. Sorry if its a repeat. Please point this thread in the right direction if needed...

I'm taking a Japanese class at the community college. I've never studied it before, but I did attempt to try and teach myself, which ended up with a huge failure even after spending a bunch of money on audio and books.

Now I'm taking a class and I feel like I'm far behind everybody else. I can't make it to tutoring when the Japanese tutors are there (because of work and school schedule). Now I wonder if anybody is willing to help me out? Maybe some other people would like to join and learn a bit and get some help with their Japanese too?

I think it would be nice for some people to help out and use Japanese for conversations. Practicing with somebody else would help me out.

:C

I'm sorry, I only know some Chinese.

Alexial_Rose 10-15-2009 07:30 AM

Well that's okay. Thanks anyways :D

BladeChild7 10-15-2009 07:31 AM

Sorry. I'm still learning myself. I have games to teach me for my ds and computer. but I'd be glad to help you if you want it.

Alexial_Rose 10-15-2009 07:34 AM

Oh that's cool! What games are they? :D I have a DS so I would be interested in that.

Right now I'm working on some Japanese homework. And I'm kind of stuck...

the mechanical heart 10-15-2009 07:42 AM

there's online translation things you can use if you're stuck, i'm sure a little bit of that kind of help won't kill you. :3

but have you tried rosetta stone? it's spendy, but it's supposed to be quite helpful and my friend is using it to learn japanese as well.

BladeChild7 10-15-2009 07:42 AM

It's just a learn Japanese game. I don't have it with me right now, but I can give you
the title later. But it's really fun and you learn everything. You just need to memorize everything you learn. Including Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, as well as sentence structure.
And the games they have to help you learn are really fun too. They have a whack-a-mole like game, memory, flashcards, and one where they build bridges when you get the sentence structure right.

Angel+Laugh 10-15-2009 07:43 AM

there was a thread about Japanese. i bet you can find someone there to help.

Well you can always reply later with the title ^.^ Right now I learned most of the Hiragana and I'm having a bit of a hard time wtih sentence structure... And memorizing, remembering, and recalling vocabulary is a pain... Anyways, the games sound fun. I used to have a game I bought that was for japanese learning but I've lost it orz

rosetta stone, other than being a historical translating rock found forever ago, it's a computer program that you can buy and install that teaches you languages.

they have a ton of languages to choose from. my friend really liked it, but she ended up stopping it because her boyfriend was from mexico and she changed her life plans to go move to mexico with him and she needs to know spanish.

anyways. here's the link to the website if you're interested.

Looks pretty interesting. Very spendy tho. Would take me a couple months to make that much money =X

I would invest in it, if I could do some sort of trial of the software and liked it.

So far i'm kind of having trouble finding a good translator that will translate english to Japanese romanji.. Hiragana wouldn't be bad, cause I can somewhat read that... But anything else is way over my head.

Actually this website was were I learned the basis of my Japanese. It's for little kids so it's easy.

Umm. I spent a lot of time, making up ryhmes and stories to help me remember words and phrases, if you want to know any or just need general help feel free to PM me.

Sizzla 10-15-2009 01:57 PM

If you want to actually speak Japanese with others, make a thread in Menewsha Nation, where the hangouts are located. I'm sure there are others around who do speak Japanese and would be happy to help you practice. :D

Just remember that speaking in a foreign language is only allowed in the Menewsha Nation forum. :D

dianakitsune 10-15-2009 11:20 PM

Sorry, but I'm learning chinese right now, I plan on taking Japanese next year since my college advisor said two languages my first year would be hard

You're lucky that your community college has Japanese. The one I'm at only offers three or four language courses. But, I have just bought a DS and I'm going to try out My Japanese Coach since I've heard its good for the basics.

LillyAnne 10-16-2009 01:18 AM

Um, language programs that I would suggest are the following: the Michel Thomas Method , Pimsleur, Rosetta stone...... You can find all these at the library except for rosetta, the japanese language for michel thomas is rather new but it will make its way to the library in time! :( BUT that is a lot of money's worth of information that would have you very advanced for FREE! you do have to invest alot of time, but everything worth doing takes time!!! I wish you luck!!

i really want Rosetta Stone but it is so expensive! my pockets are deep and i have short arms. >.<
i have books that i got really cheap offline and so far they are doing good, but i haven't kept up with it so when it comes to speaking/writting japanese my brain is all mush

My college offers a bunch of others as well; German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and even ASL those are the ones I know of and I'm not sure if there are any more. I've heard of the Japanese game for DS I am going to look into that. It would be fun and helpful I think. I want to take more Japanese classes in the future too.

Rosetta Stone looks pretty nifty. But I agree with you. It's so spendy! I actually spent about 100 dollars that i saved up from my christmas money and bought a Book with CDs but it didn't help me much because I learn different =X

It's funny because I didn't even think about going to the library to find anything :P I always use the library at school but that is for research for papers :D Now I have a to do list ^.^

Lune Selet 10-16-2009 06:57 AM

on You tube there are videos that teach you some basics search "genki japan" they have a whole bunch of fun songs that are catchy.

xXShiningamiXx 10-16-2009 02:12 PM

Watch movies in Japanese WITHOUT subtitles! :D It will help you get used to the language being used and will help you understand it. Also don't use Rosetta unless you are able to learn like a baby. If you are already into sentance structure or grammer Rosetta won't really help you. Pimsleur lessons are useful too, there are many CD lessons that can help you out there.
Lots of luck!

I've watched some anime and a few movies in japanese. I'm not so sure it helps tho because I have no idea what is being said >.<;
And I've learned some sentence structure, but it's all pretty much basic. Unless I can find something like those cds online or a library or a friend, I don't think i'll use them, because i don't have any money to spend on things lol :P
