I read the intro to the first book, so you're ahead of me!

Jake Chambers Jr. 10-09-2010 04:26 AM

I really liked the first book of the Drizzt series. I felt the fights scene were described really well, and they were interesting to picture. Typically I get bored, reading those parts of other books. That book really exposed a lot of the Drow society which I found to be very strange and interesting. Made them all the more threatening when I encountered them in a campaign.

Scribbled Lore 10-09-2010 02:10 PM

Is the War of the Spider Queen a D&D based book?

KiwiRose 10-09-2010 02:51 PM

I think it is, actaully.

Scribbled Lore 10-12-2010 02:53 PM

My partner has been in the process of reading it for some years now from the library. Last I knew they never had the next book in the series that he's supposed to be reading in. :XD He has awful book luck like that.

KiwiRose 10-12-2010 06:07 PM

Aww, that really stinks.

Do you two have a Hal-Price bookstore, or something similar, near you? That's where a lot of my nooks come from.

Scribbled Lore 10-12-2010 07:12 PM

Actually.. we don't. There's one about an hour from us but otherwise we only have a local used bookstore, which rarely gets that sort of book in (but we could order them there), or major retailers.

KiwiRose 10-13-2010 12:43 AM

Ah. Our half-price bookstore is 20 minutes away... and I love the place.

I'd e willing to drive an hour to get there, but I'm the kind of person who spends hours in the place.

There's a Border's right up the street from it, too, which I think is funny.

Scribbled Lore 10-13-2010 01:12 PM

That is a bit funny. :XD I can't spend an hours worth of gas and not know that they're going to have the book in. We can't afford that kind of thing right now but I love to support local businesses so we'll probably end up ordering it from the local used bookstore. He doesn't do anything we couldn't do, he just pulls it off Amazon, but it means I don't have to mess with Amazon and his business stays open.

KiwiRose 10-15-2010 12:22 AM

That's cool, though. I love small businesses, they rock.

OH! so I just finished the entire Lady Penitent series by Lisa Speldman, it's a book about Elistraee and Loth fighting over who gets to hold sway over the drow, and it was so splendidly done. I actually felt myself tear up a bit at the end of the last book.

Scribbled Lore 10-15-2010 02:08 PM

What would you recommend for someone who's just getting into books that are D&D based?

KiwiRose 10-15-2010 04:28 PM

Besides the books with Drizzt in them (which is a lot, I have trouble keeping up. Maybe there's a wiki somewhere...), I recommend the War of the Spider Queen Series, and the Lady Penitent Series. The Dragonlance series is awesome as well, I sadly haven't been able to read them all.

Elaine Cunningham wrote a trilogy, the Daughter of the Drow, and it's ok... but I didn't really enjoy them. None-the-less, they still ezplain how Drow eventually are able to use magic on the surface, so it's still good to read.

Scribbled Lore 10-18-2010 05:40 PM

Is there a way to determine the chronological order of events from all of these books?

KiwiRose 10-18-2010 05:53 PM

I'm sure there is, but I don't know it. What we need is a D&D novel wiki. That would rock.

Oh, and there are some books written in the Eberrron Universe as well, but I don't know the name of any of those.

Scribbled Lore 10-21-2010 12:22 AM

Y'know, I was hoping there'd be some kind of wiki or guide but I'll have to google it myself then.

KiwiRose 10-22-2010 11:59 PM

It would be nice. There is a Forgotten Realms Wiki somewhere, but I don't know if it covers the books. Never looked at it myself.

Scribbled Lore 10-23-2010 01:15 AM

Maybe CZ will help me. I keep telling him to come over and say hello but he's too busy looking up information for his monk and mapping his feats.

KiwiRose 10-23-2010 01:17 AM

My brother is a feat mapper. For the most part, I just grab things as I go. Sometimes it can screw me, but oh well.

Scribbled Lore 10-23-2010 01:46 PM

CZ is trying to get me to do some feat mapping for my paladin. It's so frustrating! I have to think about things I would have never considered before. Like mounted combat!

KiwiRose 10-25-2010 03:52 PM

I like it for some characters, but most of the time I get too lazy to continue, or change my mind as a new feat comes to light.

Feat mapping can be more fun/useful with multiclass and hybrid characters, at least to me. I have to be more careful with my feat choices, to make sure my character doesn't get weakened in some way.

Scribbled Lore 10-26-2010 03:57 AM

CZ is helping me work out the feat mapping for my paladin who is going to specialize in mounted combat. *nodnod* You should see the ridiculous amounts of notes he has for his character.

KiwiRose 10-27-2010 01:28 AM

Hey, that's cool, though!

I usually put more work into my background... I have a character binder full of possible stories for characters I'll probably never get to play. I have a Gnoll/Anthro-Wolf hybrid that I've wanted to play forever, and I haven't gotten the chance, yet.

Scribbled Lore 10-27-2010 01:11 PM

Ahh, I see. And that's an odd combination!

Normally I roll a character and see where my imagination takes me. :D

KiwiRose 10-27-2010 05:31 PM

I love doing that! It's gotten worse since I got the Character Builder installed on my computer. What's that? I can build a character faster than the hubby can cook dinner? I'm doomed! No more life for me! :XD

Scribbled Lore 10-27-2010 10:29 PM

Where do you get said character builder?
