Association by... smell? O.o

So my cousin has always had this thing, where she identifies people as a smell. Meaning (in my terms) that when she meets people, she automatically associates a random smell with them. Mine is coconut, according to her. I never smell coconutty. >>

Anywho, I was just wondering if any of you out there associate odd things with people, like smells, tastes, and so on.
I tend to do the smell thing. How about you?

* if there is a thread stating all of this nonsense, I apologize.

lols !! thats quite cool !! i associate people with famous people hahaha !! i just base it on who they remind me of first ! silly i know !! wish i could do the smell thing tho, that must be interesting !!

Antagonist 10-24-2009 09:46 AM

That's interesting o.O;
I usually associate people by their looks, and try to remember things about them that will be able to allow me to remember them. I'm horrible with remembering people's names and faces.

Though I know the smell thing...I sometimes do that too. When I get close enough in a friendship, I would sometimes lean over and plant my nose into their shirt and inhale...I find that everyone smells different, and it's usually a pleasant sort of scent...I can't describe it, but I guess one could call it a 'human' scent, I suppose.

when i get close to people i notice their individual smell a lot. everyone smells different. thats one of the reasons i like hugs, because i get to inhale the person's smell. it calms me somehow.

DarkxLorelei 10-24-2009 02:07 PM

I associate events by smell.

I have really never met anyone else that associates by smell, that makes me happy.
When I smell vanilla It reminds me of the one christmas I had, my one body spray reminds me of the time in my life where I had no life and I would do nothing but go out to the mall and rollerblade xD

Scotch 10-24-2009 04:01 PM

I'll associate by looks, most often, just so I can remember a face. But speaking of smells reminding you of certain things, cigarettes (unsure of which brand) remind me of last Christmas, because of something that had happened that general month. So now, if I ever get my friend's jacket, and inhale deeply, I can be reminded of last year. His family smokes that brand of cigarette, and he is the one I got that smell from in the first place. xD

I associate smells with memories. Sometimes that includes a particular person or people. Mostly, I associate colors with a person. Everyone has their own palette. Not only their natural colors, but the colors they choose to wear. I suppose their general mood affects the impression also. Yes, I have friends that I associate with shades of black.

[K]acee 10-24-2009 04:39 PM

I associate people by smells or by auras that I can sense around people.

Usually it's by smell though.

One of my friends, I associate with the smell of cotton candy. Cause even when she doesn't use her cotton candy body spray, she just always smells really sweet and fluffy like it.

Another one of my friends I associate with the scent of newly opened garbage bags. You know, like when you first take one out of the box and shake it open. That kinda smell. Although, I will never tell him he smells like a garbage bag to me since he might take it the wrong way. >>

Codette 10-24-2009 05:21 PM

Actually thats not that weird. My boyfriend and I, have pretty much figured out eachother based on senses. I smell like lavender, he smells like spice. I feel like silk, he's a comforting cotton. I taste like strawberries, he tastes like... well spices ^.^ .

Also events. Like Thanksgiving, is the only time I eat turkey, so theres that smell.

Sassa-

You know, people do have a color to them. O: I often think of people with colors, too. I don't have a color, since I'm me, and.. well, I'd pick one of my favorites. I need someone else to give me a color. xD

Kacee-

That cotton candy body spray is so good. >>

Syraan-

You know.. I've never really been close enough for a person to figure all of that out with them. That's really cool. O:

Yes they do, but I was trying not to bring auras into this. :) Besides, I can't always see them myself. I have a color. I've been told I am all pink/blue/purple. Those are my favorite colors, but I suspect the people who told me already knew that. ;)

Phoenixxangel 10-24-2009 06:20 PM

I associate people with smell!! Hehe not everyone but meh.

Just stuff people smell like the most. If I walk into a house I always notice how it smells =3

My ex used to wear this cologne, and when I smell it, I think of nice, fuzzy things =3 i dont associate it with him anymore, just with nice stuff =3

Suzhi Mix 10-24-2009 06:34 PM

hmmm.. I associate people with emotions.. like what I feel when I meet them :P If I talked to someone for the first time, and I thought he/she was pleasant, i would remember them by that.. I'm horrible with names and faces haha though I can sometimes use smell too.. but I don't compare people's smell with anything else, just them.. if that makes sense? haha like I could recognize the smell of my childhood friend (who I haven't talked to in like 5 years) anytime.. she just smells like her, and nothing else has that same smell :D

I totally know what you mean on that last bit! I still can remember the way some of my old friends smelled.

My favorite color is blue, and I like a few other ones, though. But if I had to put a color to myself, it WOULD NOT be blue. O.o

Telendil Thaliel'dhar 10-24-2009 07:06 PM

Well, scent is the sense most closely tied to memory, but most of the time I only associate scent with people who have a body odor problem, be it cigarettes, doesn't bathe enough, or wears too much perfume.

Sometimes I'll associate people and things with music, mainly whatever had been playing at the time I met them.

Other times, I associate them with images, although it's not a conscious thing when I do. I'll remember somebody, and then also see an image of whatever I may have been looking at when I met them. One time, I associated an old McD's radio commercial with a piece of rat clipart from a worksheet I was working on (with the radio on) when I was a kid. Seriously.

Chouno 10-24-2009 07:10 PM

I tend to know people before knowing them, if that counts?? xP

Did you know... if someone's natural scent smells nice to you, they very well could be a genetic match to you? (Has to do with nature wanting better babehz, but I'll keep the details to myself, unless aksed.)

Edit: I biasly group people according to their intelligence and open-mindedness, because, well, I have some pretty crazy views of everything, and I'll just be seen as crazy if someone's not open to obscure POVz. =3

Scotch 10-24-2009 07:35 PM

Chouno -

I'd love to hear what you have to say about the natural scent thing, though. O:

Chouno 10-24-2009 07:45 PM

Hokay, well, your scent is from your immune system bacteria farting and stuff. xD

Anyway... if someone smells nice, they have a different immune system than you do.
A result of this, would of course, be a baby with a better immune system, having stuff from both different parents.
Another way, other than smell, that NATURE uses to try to lure better baby making is that when you "do the do" with the said genetic match, it's said to yield more pleasure and better organasms! xP
(I like to misspell thingz, you know what I meant there.)

Just a *fun* fact for ya. ;)

!JAZZYMAN! 10-24-2009 07:48 PM

I associate people by clothing style. e_e No matter how stereotypical that sounds.

oh my gosh how could you! :gonk:

Lolz nah, I think I get it. Sounds interesting.
Want to elaborate anyway? Example are always fun!:eager:

Blkmage Disaster 10-24-2009 08:00 PM

I guess I associate people by personality, and quirks. About the smelling thing, it could be perfume or some kind of body wash. But maybe I'm just too technical.

Hana no Hime 10-24-2009 08:38 PM

I think I know what you mean about natural ( not bad odors ) body odors, Chouno.

I watched a documentary about the booming pheromones business marketing perfumes and colognes. Basically, they collected really good looking, physically fit subjects' sweat or articles of clothing worn. :o Manufactured it into a highly concentrated oil and sell it to people wanting to gain more attention from the opposite sex. It was very interesting.

I've been told I have a "warm and inviting scent". =3

Chouno 10-24-2009 08:47 PM

I saw it on a science show where they have little parties, cheek swabs, and tell ya who yer a genetic match to, and you get to know them. xD
Just for fun kinda thing, still it was interesting.

And, if I gathered right, but I could be wrong... these "bad odors" are caused by the same immune-system bacteria... so your lurver shouldn't smell bad when all messy. :P

chrom0 10-24-2009 09:19 PM

My fiancee does that. When we go out I ask him what perfume i should wear and he relates the smells from a time in our relationship and gives me a date xD
