The hit virtual reality game, 'Online' has been steadily expanding since its recent re-release. The MMORPG has had great success and continues to grow popular amongst world wide masses. Many consider the game an escape from the real world, new features adding to its addictive values and obsessive user-base. ///////// |
The quiet buzz of headphones melted away from a lanky young man, about to submerge himself in an online game. An online world. He kicked his boots off, tugged on blue jeans and took his seat in an almost over sized chair. A tuffet of darkly colored bangs dipped down in front of his eyes, and he pushed them away only to set an odd sort of goggles on his face - something to enhance the virtual reality experience.
The young man was Grigory, or at least, in the dark of his room he was. The moment he clicked on the monitor in front of him was the moment he'd become his online persona, a character by the screen name 'Vilify' that he'd been working at for the past half a year -- another of the many members of a rather popular MMORPG. The hint of a smile accented his lips as the words 'LOG IN' showed up on the screen. With a quick tapping of keys he'd done just that, waiting for the freedom of the escaping to this game, for the bright and brilliant graphics to light up his headset. It'd been a long day of work, after all, and Grigory couldn't help but allow himself that bit of excitement; he felt he deserved it. The now all too familiar sight of a busy bazaar had loaded around him, his appearance taking a change to match his character in game. The thief-based character had a lean, agile appearance. His bright eyes stood out amongst scarves and light armor, the iris an interesting mix of white with a hint of a minty green tinge. To his belt clung a single dagger, a rather expensive dagger, the current weapon of choice. Above his extravagantly dressed character's head clung the screen name, 'Vilify' -- and thats exactly who he was now, who those on the game would see him as. It wasn't the crowded market place that clawed at Vilify's attention, however. Rather, it was the flash of an upcoming event. From what he understood of it, it was a quest of sorts; although, just a pre-announcement, not yet released. The first thing that came to the thief's mind was what sort of rewards it might entail, already having forgot the real world for the glamor of this online one. |
[IMGLEFT]http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/hawaiianchic16/Cold-1.png[/IMGLEFT]Having been on his own since the age of eighteen, Caden Andersen returned home after a hard day's work at the local newspaper he was currently writing a column for. Although he enjoyed the days of unknown employment as a freelance journalist and photographer, he didn't much like how work could come and go... And therefore, make his income suffer.
As he plopped himself down on the computer chair, he moved his dark hair away from his face, loosening the black tie around his neck. The top couple of buttons on his long-sleeve, collared-shirt were left unbuttoned, the short untucked. The black slacks lay gently against his legs, and he stretched momentarily before setting his hand down on the keyboard, typing away, the mouse clicking to get a few documents open. However, his attention barely held long enough before he found himself, goggles on, logging into the MMORPG "Online". A grin spread across his face as name "Nikko" appeared upon the screen. He swiftly typed his password, the familiar setting of a bazaar appearing before his eyes, many different players passing before him. A man with black hair and black cat ears, complete with a black tail appeared on the streets as an assassin, known in the game, as "Nikko", his alter persona in the game. The black outfit on his body blew in the wind, clinging loosely to his body and moving gently. The look on his face was solemn, and his black eyes shifted as he moved, gracefully and cat-like, amongst the streets. As he moved, a notice appeared on his screen about a certain quest that was to be occurring in the near future, and thoughts of joining came to his mind as he continued to venture though the marketplace. |
Vilify had nearly lost himself in the crowd, venturing from shop to shop to look at their wares - nothing new, nothing rare. With disappointment staring him in the face, he had little to look forward to in the market place, asides from the upcoming event. The costume-dressed thief pushed passed pixel after pixel - each looking rather realistic for a game, asides from their fantasy themed attire and varying appearances. Today, he'd claim himself a pick pocket, using a petty in-game skill to steal small amounts of gold and the occasional item from the users he bumped into.
It wasn't long before a new announcement floated across the screen, and it caught Vilify's full attention. Soon after reading it, parties of people began to disappear from the groups of those still in the market place, undoubtedly headed off to fulfill the offered quest. Vilify clicked away from the announcement with a frown, there seemed to be a catch: the only way to participate in the event-quest was to form a party -- a party meant at least one other person, one other person the thief didn't have. He had played this game solo up until now, although the promises of rewards had already made him consider finding a team. From what he could tell, the majority of users that had stuck around weren't of particularly high levels or experience - useless on a quest such as this. He scouted out the area, nearly ran into the solution to his problem: A cat-themed Assassin stood in front of him, his username reading 'Nikko.' The thief hadn't time to waste. Jumping on opportunity Vilify approached the player, although the expression on his face couldn't exactly be described as friendly. "You want to do the quest?" The thief asked, apparently forgetting about manners or further social skills in his desire for the quest's rewards. It hadn't exactly said what sort of trials they'd face, only that they'd find out upon reaching the area - one he was unable to get to without a party. |
The sudden appearance of a male thief player brought him from his thoughts, and he turned to look at the male. The bright eyes peering out from behind scarves was what he noted first of all, before flickering his eyes upward to the screen name. He read the letters... "Vilify," he muttered, turning to look back at the man. It was clearly a thief character from the way he looked, eyes shifty and stance cautious, though movements agile and swift, almost unnoticeable. As a habit, he felt his pockets for his things before further continuing the conversation.
"Quest, hm? Well, seeing as I have nothing much better to do, I suppose that would be my only option, would it not?" he asked in a low and smooth voice, his cat-like eyes watching the man hidden beneath the scarves. Nikko's posture held an air of arrogance as he stood there, exchanging words with the character, Vilify, although the man who sat at the computer, Caden, was nothing of the sort. In real life, Caden was a push over, someone who couldn't take charge of his own life, and was slowly sliding down a pit hole to bankruptcy around every corner that he turned... Unstable lifestyles such as his made for stressed out people, and Caden was definitely part of the masses. But on "Online", he was a cool, calm, and collected person. His actions were smooth as silk, and the arrogance, although obvious, was classy enough that he could get away with it without offending the majority of players on the game. The mere way he spoke on the game seemed to lure people in... Women usually asking for a real life meeting... Although he would always decline. He wasn't looking for anything serious in his life yet... No, it was too chaotic to even think about adding another component... Turning is eyes back up to Vilify, he tilted his head to the side. This character, however, was male. He seemed fairly experienced compared to the rest that were left behind in the wake of the new event. He figured that Vilify could possibly be the same level as he... Perhaps slightly stronger, for he didn't have as much time as he would like to get on to the game... But he made time, and he put in effort to level up, and after about three-quarters of the past year, he found himself in that spot, in that bazaar, waiting on Vilify's response. |
Vilify smirked a little at the assassin's demeanor, although it was just a taste of his personality the thief felt it he wouldn't be hard to work with. At the moment Nikko had verbally accepted the request, he'd sent another, this time in-game to start the party. It might have done them good to find a few other players to join, spread out their selection of classes and abilities, yet Vilify wasn't so interested in it. More people meant less reward, and the thief wasn't keen on the idea of being a team player. A partner was one thing, something he could handle.
Part of what he'd enjoyed so much out of the game was the escape from real social interactions. It was not as though you did not exchange words to go with the game play, but it was simply different from how things worked in the real world. It was an experience he'd become more than familiar with, more than comfortable with. "Well what are we waiting for then!" He said, following this new aquintance's feline eyes as they gazed towards his own. The thief made a gesture towards leaving, knowing further introductions could come later. It wasn't but moments before the thief had transported to the event area, where the set quest had already begun. He assumed Nikko would do the same, as he was unable to participate till he did. The late start didn't at all ruin Vilify's idea of fun, nor was he particularly over eager about things - at least, not any more. He sifted through a few items on his person, now thinking it might have been an idea to have stocked up on a few potions before leaving. Shrugging it off both in game and in real life, the thief awaited the arrival of his team mate. A shy appearing yet far from plain looking NPC stood only few feet away from him, and as if accustom to the ritual of event-quests in the game, Vilify figured it was programmed only to explain the task to come. |
Noting the small pop-up that had appeared on the screen, he opened it to find the party invitation. He clicked accept, and was transported, instantly, to the event site, finding himself standing beside the thief. As he awaited instructions from the nearby NPC, Nikko checked his inventory. He was fortunate to have been well stocked with a good amount of potions and ethers, and other such necessities.
He glanced, again, at Vilify and noted that the player did not seem well-equipped for the upcoming quest, but no matter... Nikko figured he'd have enough for the both of them, and Vilify could pay him back after. He'd just have to keep track, he thought, smirking a little. "So, let's do this, eh, mate?" he said as he looked at the NPC, ready to listen to the instructions and information of the quest. |
((If you want to you can control the NPCs/events also, of course -- not that I'm telling you to, just know that you're welcome to do so. ))
The thief was glad to see his new team mate beside him, apparently also ready get started on the quest. The petite NPC took a step forward, she was an example of the AI in the game being rather advanced. She yawned, wiped her eye and began to bother her lip before beginning her introduction. "Welcome to the event quest #000495. Participating party: Nikko, Vilify." The odd greeting was custom, although the NPC's 'personality' shone through with the rest of her speech. "I... I've lost my cat.." The girl cried. Vilify cringed, he detested the more childish NPCs. A image popped up beside her, showing the two just what her 'cat' looked like -- apparently a stuffed animal. "Its back there. But I can't get it. Won't you find it for me? Please!" Her voice was soft, but not hard to hear, and overall she reminded one almost of a mouse. Before the thief could head past her, she handed the two a key each. It appeared the goal of the quest was to locate her 'stuffed animal' in the dungeon up a head, although for now, it was beyond Vilify what the keys would be for. It didn't seem as though they were about to get much more information on the quest, so without further forethought, the thief walked passed the girl and into the moss-covered cave that hid behind her. The in game plant life glew with life, and the rocks shone with an odd, tribal-like design. The scenery, as always, was beautiful. "Sounds like it'll be an easy quest..." Vilify said, looking towards the assassin. He seemed a little disappointed by the simplicity of it all. The thief couldn't see any other parties further in, although the cave undoubtedly would have multiple chambers to it. What he did see, though, was a rather high level monster, something that made him retract his previous statement. Grabbing his dagger, he glanced again at Nikko, a broad smile on his character's face -- ready for the first fight. |
As he listened to the NPC speak, his eat twitched in partial annoyance. Not only was he a neko (part cat), but he slightly despised childish NPC's. He didn't harbor much sympathy towards them. They had stupid events to find lost items... And unlucky for him, this one had lost her "cat". His ear twitched again. He took the key from the NPC and walked briskly past, following after Vilify.
Upon entering the cave, he too, spotted the rather high level monster. Extending his arm, a staff appeared, short and sharp ended on one side, and broad and sword like on the other. His stance widened and he glanced at Vilify. "Let's do it," he said with a nod of his head as he charged the monster. His tail flicked in tune with his step and he leapt at it, shoving his spear at it, feeling the familiar tug of opening flesh beneath the sharp blade. Landing, he lurched again, but this time, the monster reacted, and threw it's arm, flying Nikko against a nearby wall. He hiss in pain, rising again. |
Vilify watched the assassin summon his weapon, then as he charged at the monster. The thief wasn't far behind, lunging after to throw in a few hits well it became distracted with his ally.
The monster was powerful, but slow. Where Nikko had left off Vilify picked up, darting behind the attacking beast to throw in some quick stabs. The thief's attacks didn't render the most damage, his swift attacks, however, put in enough small hits in ratio to the short amount of time it took that it began to even out. "You alright?" He asked Nikko, barely dodging an oncoming attack from the creature as he did. He let out a soft laugh as he jabbed at it again, further decreasing its hit points. The monster would prove itself a lot more difficult if the thief hadn't had Nikko in his party -- as a team they'd work much more efficiently in taking it down. Vilify slid back as the monster hit him, it wasn't dead on and he'd managed to keep his footing, although barely. The thief readied himself to finish the monster off, after Nikko threw in some finishing blows. |
"I'm fine, how are you doing?" Nikko laughed, as he saw Vilify doing some damage to the large monster. He noted that the creature was about to falter... Just a few more critical hits, and they would have made it past the first big guy. As Vilify slid back, Nikko raised his spear above his head and twisted, making it spin above him, a small ability he had learned to do a while back, through a lot of painful efforts.
As the spear spun above his head, he pulled out two daggers that were at his side. "you're going down, big guy," he said beneath his breath, a smirk on his face as he charged at the monster, flinging both daggers expertly at it, making to critical blows. When he got near enough, he jumped up, grabbing the spear at the same time, mid twirl, and digging it straight into the monster's forehead. He then returned the spear to his back, retrieved his daggers and jumped off of the beast, his eyes flashing to Vilify. "Finish him!" he yelled down. |
