Crazy Long Hair?

Hey all!
I'm trying to grow my hair out after cutting into a jaw length bob this past March. Right now it touches my collar bone when straight. About how long do you think it'll take for me to get it to the middle of my back?
And more importantly, what should I do to take care of it? Should I clip the ends (because lots of people told me not to)? Should I wear it down to bed or in a ponytail? ETC. So I'm just looking for great hair tips and stuff like that. Thanks all! :3

January 8th, 2009:

My hair was cut in layers, it's at the point between my boobs and my collarbone

October 26th, 2009:

My hair hasn't been cut yet, it's now 3-4 inches from my butt if I make it straight. If I leave it as curly then it's 5-6 inches from my butt.

---===---

Give it 4 to 5 months, maybe then it'll be as long as mid-back.

I keep my hair short but as a person who used to have fairly long hair, make sure you take care of any split ends. Long hair does not look good when it's full of split ends and once it comes time for the hair dresser to take care of them, they'll be taking a lot of hair off. So yes, get routine cuts to deal with split ends to keep your hair healthy looking.

I'm not sure how long it takes to get it that long(I just recently cut my hair, If I had straightened it out before I cut it, it would have been over my butt. xP), but I do know you should get it trimmed every few month to avoid/get rid of split ends. (:

YEAH! Oh that's so wonderful to hear, Leenalia! <3 Thanks everyone. I'll make sure to chop my ends soon. ^-^ Any more advice for maintenance?

ah i don't know how yours grows.. mine grows like weeds.... i have had mine long for a good long time too..

For me, just a small trim every now and then works. If you also want it to grow faster (this works with me anyway) I pull my hair back into a ponytail (when possible) or wear hats. Apparently sweat stimulates the hair or something and gets it to grow faster. Between the two, my hair grows like a weed.

I hope this helps. C:

Okay heres what to do:
Good job on getting it growing so far.
Keep a healthy diet-or at least make shure your body is getting what it needs.
Cut the ends whenever you notice your ends are beging to split, if you
dont know how to identify this ask your mother or an aunt or a teacher etc.
Wash It every two days, or if you take a shower every day Use conditioner.
At night dont sleep with it in a pony tail, this can cause breakage, try loose braids, or just leave it.
When wet use a wide tooth comb, and comb it with a wide tooth comg even when dry before
you use a brush etc. this helps take the knotts out easy with out pulling your hair out.
Dont flat iron it a whole bunch, and if your going to be blow drying it do it on cool.
Um scalp massages are supposed to stimulate growth.
Im thinking to get it down to your waist it should take a good two to three years.
But rember trim it when you get slip ends!! if not it will loook HORRIBLE!!
I hope this heelped!

I've heard trimming the ends works. I know I'm horrible at upkeep and it took me two years to get my hair back down to butt length after getting two feet cut off. It shouldn't take quite that long if you keep it trimmed.

I have long hair, it's past the middle of my back >< I had long hair for most of my recent years..I cut it to my shoulders when I went to Mexico 2 years ago and now it's grown to be slightly longer then before. I wear my hair down almost all the time, even when i'm out doing physical stuff.. which is bad haha. I don't do anything special to my hair, I wash it every other day, and sometimes I use special Indian oil on my hair...it is good for having long, thick and healthy hair >< Although, because of the oil, I'm not as blonde as I used to be haha
good job at growing it so far :3 Just don't get any major haircuts, and trimming your ends is optional...although it does look really nice.

As a girl who is currently aiming to grow her hair to tailbone length - Hooray! We need more long-hair beauties in the world!

Just beware of a couple myths:
  • Trimming your hair will not make it grow faster. It just keeps the ends neat and slows down visible growth.
  • You can't force your hair to grow faster. A lot of treatments or pills will say that they can do this, but they are lying. Only a balanced diet full of vitamins will help you reach your maximum growing speed and keep your hair healthy.
  • Don't wear it down all the time. Think of it like wearing your favorite shirt everyday: Soon it'll get worn out, dirty, and get full of holes. The wear-and-tear of daily life hurts your hair, too. So braids, buns, and ponytails (without harsh elastic bands or metal rubbing against it) will help keep it in good condition.

It'll take a while before your hair grows out to that length. I'd guess about two years, at least, depending on how fast your hair grows. Trimming wise, I've heard it both ways, but I personally think that if you don't trim your hair as much, it grows faster. Just wash it, don't leave it down all the time, and I don't think that the way you wear it to bed matters.

I used to have crazy long hair as well. I then proceeded to cut it all off--literally. I now have a short, boy hair style, and everyday, I have the internal battle if I want to grow it out again. -sigh-

mwahhaha 10-27-2009 05:19 PM

Thanks everyone! <3 These are good tips. So I'm looking at 4-5 months for the middle of my back and about 2 years for butt length? Sounds good.
I'm looking forward to having my crazy long hair back. ^-^

I had long hair, and cut it off. Just treat it well, like everyone said, be sure to trim it. Because it's not all about it being long, it's about being long and healthy. I normally recommend combs verus brushes depending on your hair texture.

Evaleain 10-27-2009 07:24 PM

let it get dirty, not muddy but don't wash it every day do it like ever 4 days or so but also pamper it with nice conditioning lotions. dab dry after showers of Luke warm water, always rinse with cold water it'll lock in all it's special nutrients and it'll make it shine, get your tips clipped every so offten it'll keep your hair growing once the dead ends have been clipped.

Hair is nothing more than a collection of dead cells, so it's all a "dead end."

The only reason you should really trim your hair is to combat split ends. Once they start splitting, you just have to get rid of the end before it splits up farther towards your scalp.

But instead of getting trims all the time, have you ever heard of dusting? Just buy yourself a pair of small hair scissors and examine your ends. If you see a split end, snip it off. If you do this once in a while, you won't even need to go in for trims.

My dad is always saying I need a haircut, but my bro's hair is way longer and has a thick beard. I once saw him without a shirt and got the impression I was looking at a hillbilly.

Rupert_Lestrange 10-28-2009 12:26 AM

Wow, a lot of people have long hair! ^^ Um, maybe super long, a whole year? If you do regular treatment, and conditioning, that sort of thing, maybe even longer. I rub oil based products into my scalp once or twice a week to help the growing process. *healthy scalp, healthy hair growth* Mine used to be to my jaw, but now it's almost to shoulder, but I also haven't been doing it for long..less than a month.

Zephiyr 10-28-2009 12:29 AM

I haven't cut my hair in almost 3 years now. It was just at my shoulder the last tiem it was cut, and in layers, now its past my hip. I have to make sure not to sit on it. It's getting kind of annoying though and I'm definitely going to get a drasticly different cut before I deploy. Not shaved or to my chin but maybe back to my shoulders again. :)

The other reason to have regular trims is to maintain an even appearance. it isn't just for split ends. Hair grows at different rates. After a large period of growth, you will end up with a tapered look in the back. It is best have someone trim this even for you. It just makes it look neater and split ends won't be a problem.

I have a theory that Coca Cola helps grow hair and nails. Of course it also makes you fat...so ....I guess it's not a good practice. :)

hirokotan 10-28-2009 04:20 AM

When I graduated high school in June of '07, my hair was two inches long at it's longest point. Now, October of '09, my hair reaches my tailbone.

You really should clip the tips. The 'it makes it grow faster' rumors are false, but getting rid of split ends will make your hair look better, and there will be less breakage.

...of course, I really need to follow my own advice. But I'm planning on getting mine cut as soon as I'm able to get some extra money together to go to a salon.

xKindred_Silencex 11-06-2009 01:00 PM

My hair grows pretty fast it grows like 2 or 3 inches a month so I have to cut my hair every month. What I usually do is just wash my hair every 2 days, use leave in conditioner, also use like this heat protecting gell for when I straighten my hair. Its like extremely soft and shiny now.

Erailea 11-06-2009 04:04 PM

Generally speaking you should put your hair in a ponytail or a braid when you go to bed, it keeps it from getting completely knotted in your sleep. You'll still get knots, but no where near as many as when you leave your hair out at night.

My hair is super thin D; I'd love to have it get down to like my knee's, but I rather doubt that will ever happen. It's about mid-back in length now. The longest I'd ever had it was down to my butt when I was little. I can't seem to get it down there again >__<

Alright. I just recently did this myself. I cut my hair about a year ago to the length that you cut yours and mine reached the middle of my back after seven months, but my hair grows quickly.
If you want to take care of long hair you need to brush it constantly with a paddle brush, use conditioner, and be careful that you don't let it get tangled.
I find that it's better to sleep with my hair down (I don't know why but it ends up less tangled in the morning this way). I also don't know which idiots told you not to clip the ends, but you NEED to. It keeps the hair healthy AND makes it grow faster. There's nothing better than keeping the hair healthy ;).

snowmousey 11-07-2009 12:09 AM

I've read hair grows about 1cm a month on average, but it would depend on the person i guess. Does your hair usually grow fast? Find some products that will keep it sleek and try not to straighten it too often or do other things with it xD
