Subbed versus Dubbed

I know most people prefer sub over dub. I know I am one for sure. But have you ever actually found a dub better than the sub or actually think both are great?

I have actually found one anime that I prefer the dub over the sub, and that is Excel Saga. It is just funnier when you don't have to read subtitles.

Now for both the sub and dub being good, I would have to say Fruits Basket and Kaleido Star.

What are your opinions?

Lady_Megami 10-29-2009 03:22 AM

It depends on the anime, most subbed are much better then the dubbed because they with hold the original content of the anime itself. However, some dubbed as good as well.

Oh you wanted to name some?

Ones that are better subbed:

Sailor Moon
Inu Yasha
Ghost Hunt (the english voices are HORRID)

most animes that are on TV today.

Dubbed that is all right:

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Seven
Fushigi Yugi (Although I perfer the subbed)
Mushi shi (Only cause I didn't see the subbed)

ichigo8504 10-29-2009 04:17 AM

The english version of Sailor Moon for the first and second season were alright until it got to the third and fourth. GAWD!!
I actually liked Inuyash dubbed and subbed, but sub is way better.
Ghost Hunters is annoying in dubbed, but that is the only way I can find it or I would actually have to get some money to buy it or listen to it in japanese and not know what the subtitles say, because they are in German.

I honestly didn't like the dubbed version of Fushigi Yugi. The dubbed was the first one I heard until I bought the DVDs and I will never go back.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-29-2009 05:06 AM

An anime where the sub and dub were actually both good would have to be Trigun.

I haven't found an anime where the dubbed version is better than the subbed version, I have come to find that anime dubing generally sucks ass. Like Naruto was painful to listen to dubbed. Anything done by 4Kids is terrible.

I'd have to agree with Lady_Megami about the fact that when a series gets dubbed, in many cases they take out the original content...and in so many cases (like with 4Kids) they actually CHANGE a lot of the storyline...so...Dx I think 4Kids is one of the main reason I hate dubbing...I mean...if you're busy doing something and can't focus on the subtitles, dubbing is helpful...but other than that it's just annoying...

Lady Luck Infinity 10-29-2009 06:58 AM

The series Glass Fleet has good dub's- i've only seen it in english but I was impressed with the quality.

Other than that I watch mostly subs ut its a personal thing because I took 3 years of Japanese and i like to keep myself practicing. I've gotten really good at not needing subs for some parts of shows.

Wynter Syrena 10-29-2009 03:40 PM

I am a bigger fan of Subs over Dubs. In many animes' *cough*naruto*cough* the dub voices just suck. Though not all dubs are bad. The dub for Saiyuki is awesome and if it wasn't for the fact that a majority of the voice actors in Fruits Baskets also did voices in Yu Yu Hakusho (it was very disturbing hearing Kurama singing "High School Girls, High School Girls"...) Same with Ouran. I keep seeing Ed from FMA acting all fruity like Tamaki.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-29-2009 04:20 PM

O_O I'm neverwatching Fruits Basket dubbed...because that would just scar me for life...picturing Kurama doing that just....AHHHHHH....oh god...just imagining it is scaring the shit out of me O_O

ROTFLMAO Ed acting all fruity? OH MY GOD xDDDDD now THAT is hilarious imagery xDDD

Actually, you should watch it. It is really good.

I'm a sub person, too, but there are some dubs that I don't mind watching at all. Let's see...

I thought the Cowboy Bebop dub was pretty good. And the Full Metal Panic! one was all right, too, imo. I loved the Fullmetal Alchemist dub, though I wouldn't say it's better than the original Japanese (Paku Romi is amazing). I've heard that the dub for Gankutsuou is good, but I've never watched it. I love the Count's Japanese voice too much... *cough* The same is true for the dub of Baccano!. I've never seen it dubbed, but I hear it's good. Oh, and I liked the Fruits Basket dub, too, though I wouldn't say I prefer it over the sub. Oh, oh, and the Samurai 7 dub was well done, too.

So, yeah~ I don't think I've ever really come across a dub that was better than the sub. I've come across quite a few that I would say are very well done, though. ^^

Oh, wait. I prefer the dub of The Cat Returns over the subbed version. The dub has Cary Elwes playing the male lead~ *glee*

You can watched the subbed version of Ghost Hunt @ http://www.hulu.com/ghost-hunt

I think I perfer the SM subbed because of the story line..the US took so much from the original story line it wasn't funny.

Fuzzyratt 10-29-2009 11:27 PM

I'm a sub over dub all the way kind of guy but,

Martian Successor Nadesico's dub is very near equal to it's sub.
Likely the only series I have watched both sub and dub that I have bought

Dragonball Z is watchable Dub but, that is mostly because I saw if that way first.

Sailor Moon is okay Dubs early on but later is awful

Burst Angel has a part that has to be watched Dub. The use thick Texan for Osaka. It is just to funny.

Robotech was good but, it is so changed from Macross I wouldn't even try to call it the same anime.

Serenova 10-29-2009 11:31 PM

For me, it really depends on what I'm doing while I'm watching it. If I want to watch it while doing something else, I'll normally put on the dub so that I don't need to be looking at the tv or computer every 2 seconds to know what's going on. If i'm going to actually sit and watch the show, then I do prefer it dubbed. Though DBZ I watch dubbed just for the fun of it because it's just so hilarious.

BinkaKitty 10-29-2009 11:36 PM

the only problem i really have with subbed anime is i can't always keep up with reading everything. i like to watch the dubbed more if they did a good job on them.
for example, i like to watch the dubbed version of Fruits Basket cuz, as far as i've seen, its just the same as the Japanese version. but, when it comes to Digimon, i prefer to watch it in Japanese and read the subtitles. i think they did a pretty crappy job on the American version. the Japanese version is soooo much better.

InevitableDisaster 10-30-2009 12:00 AM

For me, it depends on the how the voices sound.
Yes, I do have preferred English voice actors, but as long as the voice suits the character, I'm fine.
I love FUNimation to pieces, but I didn't really like how the D.Gray-Man dub came out.
There was just something strange about the voices they picked.

Overall, I do watch for subbed anime than dubbed, but I would rather watch the dub if the dub is available and well done.

Ponta 10-30-2009 04:23 AM

Usually, whatever language I hear the anime first, is the one I like better. For instance - Trigun. I watched it in Japanese first and when I heard the English one, I was do disturbed xD Host Club was sort of the same since I saw the sub and then my friend and I watched the dub. However, I rather be able to watch what's actually going on instead of reading subtitles. I think one anime though, that I saw in English first but rather watch it in Japaense with subtitles, would be Beyblade... of course, a lot of that has to do with the edits associated with the dub.

Dubs that I thought were extremly good -
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - simply amazing. The guys ACTUALLY had maculine, believable voices.
Gundam Wing - people have actually said they thought the dub voice acting was better than the original. I just happen to love the voice actors - they're really funny at panels.

Vamien 10-30-2009 06:57 PM

I definitely prefer dubbed, but as for animes that are better dubbed, in my opinion Fullmetal Alchemist was better dubbed, because Hitsugaya just didn't fit Ed's body, I think (same voice actor).

I don't think there's been another anime I've come across that's good both ways.

TheYaoiButterfly 10-30-2009 07:01 PM

...Fullmetal Alchemist absolutly sucked when it was dubbed. I know that his Japanese voice was girly sounding, but it was too girly...I thought his Japanese voice fit him fine.

Gah...sorry...there are some dubbs that just annoy me, and FMA was one of them...

Chaostie 10-30-2009 09:01 PM

i prefer dubbed over subbed because well... i like to watch my anime rather than read it.:\

darkwolfyoukai 10-30-2009 09:39 PM

I prefer the sub unless the anime is uncut, the voices are decent, AND the dub keeps close to the original. There are animes that I've never seen the Japanese version of (Pokemon, YuGiOh, Full Metal Alchemist) that I enjoyed. YuGiOh more than likely had a horrible dub with 4Kids' background, but I was a kid at the time, so it didn't matter. I actually really liked the Pokemon dub up until Pokemon US took over dubbing. Pokemon US somehow made 4Kids look good on that subject... (awaits the end of the world)

Dubs I can't stand include everything done by 4Kids except what I already mentioned, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Detective Conan (aka: Case Closed), ect.

I found Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ouran Host Club, and Bleach to be decent.

All Ghibli movie dubs that I've seen have been excellent, though I haven't watched all of them yet.

The only anime that I found I couldn't watch in either language was DNAngel. Both of Risa's voices are annoying enough to turn me away from the anime after my first run-through.

Clarise 11-06-2009 09:08 PM

Unless the dub is horrible (I mean acting wise), I'd rather watch them dubbed.

It's unfair to say that all dubbing is bad. It means that you give no credit to the English voice actors, and especially if the series is on TV, they've gone through the trouble of keeping it as true as possible while making things relevent to an English-speaking audience. Some subs aren't too good at that in my opinion. Also, I think you can enjoy it more if you can listen to what people are saying with the inflections that we would expect in their voices and voices that make sense to English speakers (if that makes sense).

I guess my point is that it's animation, so you're not missing anything by not hearing the original voices/ the voices match the actions (unlike a live action dub). You can pay more attention to what is going on in the story and on the screen if you don't have to worry about reading everything.

pprmint 11-07-2009 12:04 AM

I suppose the good thing about dubbed is that you don't have to read all the subtitles. But for me, I absolutely can't stand it, so I just watch the subbed ones, because, frankly, I don't actually mind reading subtitles I'm used to it. And I feel like sometimes they might change the name of things in dubbed version. But what really bothers me is the pronunciation of the names. That's usually why I tend to watch subbed or i get really irritated XD.

nette 11-09-2009 12:37 AM

If it's a dvd i'm watching it depends on what my attention span is and if I'm doing something else at the time. If it's on tv it varies. If I can't stand the voices then I probably won't watch it in english.

TheYaoiButterfly 11-10-2009 05:59 PM

@pprmint: I agree with you there about with how the dubbed versions pronounce the names...and in some cases they even change the names...that one really ticks me of D< I never watch anything dubbed that 4Kids does because they fuck up the animes they dub so badly. The editing they do is half assed, so you can TELL where they edited. and then there are times that they dub things WRONG. like in Pokemon...there was some fight that Ash was having where he had all water types and they had fire...and Brock and Misty (I don't remember their japanese names) were commenting about the battle and Brock said water is weak against fire. I never saw that episode, but I saw a clip of that part and I was wtfing over that for a good 5 minutes. I just want to know HOW they could get something like that wrong? It's simple logic! And how it got by the editors is beyond me @[email protected] and they screwed up One Piece beyond recognition...I'm not even gonna touch that one with a 10 foot pole because I would be ranting for hours about how they screwed that up. I'll just leave it at I hate 4Kids with a passion and never intend on buying their merchandise. I think they should be put out of business...or at least get a whole new crew of people who can actually dub an anime and not make it suck D<
