Old fashioned words

Do you ever catch yourself using an old fashioned or out of date word in an average conversation?

Then people give you that look. You know that look, maybe with one raised eyebrow?

Anyway.

My grandma always calls her couch a davenport (totally spelling it wrong, but i know how to say it) and it will randomly come out of my mouth when im talking about mine or someone elses couch. Im like, oh:?

I said "dingbat" the other night on webcam, and my girlfriend nearly wet herself she was laughing so hard because apparently it's something that was used WAY before we were born. (19 and 20 respectively). My parents use it a lot, so I just use it. XD

Scarling Zombie 10-29-2009 04:00 AM

I say "trousers" instead of pants and "Butt me" when I'm bumming a cigarette.

x_Seeing-Stars_x 10-29-2009 04:10 AM

I say a lot of old words, sure I can't remember any of them now but I do say them!

My mom used to call my sister and I dingbats all the time, to me it isn't an out of date word.
Well, some of the words my dad uses kind of show his age though. Like calling someone a nincumpoop (I don't know how to spell it) or askign if I have the sniffles (stuffy nose/cold).

pianochan 10-29-2009 04:51 AM

Whenever I say something is "nifty" or "swell", people look at me funny.

Kris 10-29-2009 04:52 AM

Me, I may be 16, but I swear I'm stuck in the '70s. The music, the clothing, and the words! "Dig it", "psychedelic", "groovy", etc.

I love it. <3

I also say "snazzy" and "nifty".

aki kisaki 10-29-2009 04:55 AM

the only one i can remember at the moment...i still say cool things are "the bomb"

people who dance "get jiggy with it"

i can't remember anything else though! i know people have asked me "who says that anymore?" a lot of times.

Talitha001 10-29-2009 05:49 AM

heh I am always sayin epic fail to people or callin em noobs. IT might not be old timey but it sure is odd.

Leenalia 10-29-2009 10:10 AM

calling a stranger, "buster"
saying "da bomb"
"phat"
"motormouth" if someone rambles on and on
"sniffles"
I say "awesome" alot, I've been told no one says it anymore
"foxy"
"sizzling" when someone is sexy.
"shush" to quiet someone

I also use words that people don't use in sentences anymore. Like, "fantastic", "nevertheless", "nonetheless", "familial", "dreary", "abhorish", "livid". etc.

aneru 10-29-2009 10:34 AM

We used to say "narly" in elementary school.
And we brought back "DUDE".
Sayings are like clothes...they go in and out of style every few decades.

"Haberdashery", "loquacious", "shindig", and "bruhaha" are some words that I've used in the past week that got me odd stares. I'm constantly using "out of date" words and phrases, only because they fit what I am trying to say better.

SaetonChapelle 10-29-2009 01:29 PM

xD My friend is everytime I get asked out calls me a "floozy", which I don't remember being "cool" since the early 50's. xD I found it very entertaining.

Cherish 10-29-2009 01:38 PM

Yes, that happens to me all the time.
I constantly find myself using archaic words or phrases that I picked up from my eccentric upper-middle-class grandmother when I was a child. It's a habit I've never been able to break.

I suppose the most prominent one would be saying "How do you do?" when I meet people and offering my hand.

Duncan_Greymorn 10-29-2009 01:47 PM

If I've been reading a lot recently I find myself using bigger words than I normally would and sometimes if I'm reading a piece of classical literature I'll pick up the phrasing within it.

I remember back in elementary school when my teacher first told us what an ornothopter was (flying mechanical bird) I tried to use it as much as I could. xD It was awful for the people around me. Now I read books and I attempt to understand and use the bigger vocabulary, but not so much as to make the people around me think any differently. (People are ishs cared of those with the bigger words~)

Geekasaurous 10-29-2009 02:57 PM

I say 'awesome' alot but nobody really says it much where I live (Ireland) so they're like 'Okayy..?'

My brother named his band 'Huzzah' so I then started using that alot as well as 'Hurrah'.

I'm also starting to say 'Shall I...?' quite a bit now.. As in 'Shall I wait for you after school?'

I'm very easily influenced into out of the ordinary things. :D

LaVida 10-29-2009 03:07 PM

Yesterday, I just learned the word Queue means 'in line' lol XD

p o p p e t ♥ 10-29-2009 03:08 PM

Haha I've found myself saying 'Jig' like I said, I'll do a jig.... haha but also dingbat and swell, but I really only say them because they are funny, it's not like it slips out of my mouth or anything and I'm like, oops.

Krendanya 10-29-2009 04:45 PM

Blouse is another one I picked up from my grandma. Its always shirt this shirt that but as soon as someone is around I blurt out blouse. ???

Or, I never hear people saying "It drives me up the wall" My mom used to say it a lot, so now i say that instead of "It drives me crazy" (I dont know if thats technically considered out of date or old fashioned though)

Xurxo 10-29-2009 05:11 PM

This site is my favorite for 20s slang, I'll occasionally toss around these words.

Rose-Mclane 10-29-2009 05:54 PM

I have to refrain myself from saying " Ice Box ". My mom still calls the refrigerator an " Ice Box" and I got funny looks up until I was in middle school before people told me that " Ice Box" is not a correct term for a fridge anymore.

I felt Soooooooo stupid.

desertedblade 10-29-2009 07:51 PM

my friends and i have a game where we call each other whores by different outdated words "trollup" "tramp", all those good things.

Bandit of Love 10-29-2009 08:23 PM

I like to say words like Huzzah, Gosh Darn, Oh my, or Gee Willicurs! (sp?) But that's just how I was raised, you know watching Andy Griffith fr a majority of my life will do that to a person.

Olla 10-29-2009 08:46 PM

The only time I use old words is more as a joke, I don't think I just normally say some older word. Unless I just don't realize it. o__O But I'll say like Cool Beans or Snazzy or other stupid words...
