Well, I can see the viens in my arm pretty easily, but there's a big difference between seeing the vein and feeling around to find the vein for the purposes of sticking a needle into it.

I generally seem to have come across good nurses who know quite well what they're doing and how to do it. Avoid having doctors give you injections if you can though. Most of them have generally had very little experience outside of the practice orange back at medical school. Nurses with a good amount of experience under their belts but without any seeming distaste for the patients is the way to go.

...Like that shouldn't be obvious...

Suzhi Mix 10-31-2009 08:31 AM

My mom is B+, tho my dad is O- .. I have no idea what I am, so I just put B+ since that's more common ^^

I have anemia, so I wouldn't be any good at donating blood  And I'm terrified of hypodermic needles!! 0_0 It's the only fear I simply cannot overcome.. Every time I have to get blood drawn, I go to a specific nurse, cause she's really nice, and she uses the baby needles (which are like extremely thin).. but for some strange reason, when I got my tattoo, it tickled rather than hurt.. >_>

Zackarai 10-31-2009 08:32 AM

I have no idea what my blood type is. I'm not really scared of needles. It's the sucking the blood out of my body part and pricking my vein that freaks me out. I think I'd feel really weak. I'd rather if they could do it while I'm sleeping or something. Lol.

Cherish 10-31-2009 08:33 AM

I'm O- too, and like Muse, I think giving blood is important. I see it as a social responsibility, but I think being scared of needles is no excuse. If you'd accept a blood transfusion, you should give blood.

I am rarely allowed to give blood though, because I'm severely anemic, and I've only been allowed to give blood once. Every other time I've tried, either my iron levels have been way too low, or I've been below the minimum weight requirement.

I get to try again in three months time, though!

Quantum Angel 10-31-2009 08:43 AM

I am O+. Unfortunately because of my health problems, donating blood would probably not be a very good idea. That and I'm utterly terrified of needles and medical shit. I all but have panic attacks over my routine blood draws that I need to make sure I'm not about to die; the idea of someone less experienced than my usual nurse poking around in my veins, probably having to very painfully move the needle around, and drawing a good deal MORE blood than just three or four vials for my routine tests makes me sick just to imagine.

I'd love to be able to help someone out, and I'm trying to get over my fears, but...unfortunately odds are I'll never get over my health problems - little is even KNOWN about the one behind most of my problems at this time; mainly just WHAT happens and that only about 70% of patients respond to treatment - I'm lucky to be part of that 70%, though it takes three medications (in the leaflets for some of said medications, it is even said "it is unknown how this medication works"). Still, if I ever do find a cure, or some way to work around my health problems, and some way to keep myself calm enough to NOT throw up on whoever's working with me...I'd like to donate blood someday.

Lady_Megami 10-31-2009 11:35 AM

All my life my mom thought that I was B+; that's what the doctor told her...I found out that I was actually O- when I was pregnant...

strange.

Queen Fool 10-31-2009 12:30 PM

O+. Just like my mom. No clue what my dad is.

Zephiyr 10-31-2009 12:31 PM

Woohoo! I'm A- and the first one to post (I think) first one to vote at least :P

Ambz 10-31-2009 01:38 PM

My parents don't know their blood types but my sister is O+, I believe. I would love to know what type I am, but how do I go about doing that? Just donate blood? I have no fear of needles since I've have plenty of shots in my lifetime.

Talentless_Muse 11-01-2009 01:52 AM

Good luck with donating, Cherish.

I don't see what the big deal is with a lot of you guys and needles. Honestly, it's only as big a deal as you make of it.

Erailea 11-01-2009 07:13 AM

I actually don't know my blood type... I have to remember to ask next time I go to the doctors and have blood work done... not that I really ever go to the doctors. There has to be something seriously wrong with me to go. Either that or I need a physical so I can do something (like when I was getting certified for scuba diving)

Saiyouri 11-01-2009 08:46 AM

I know I am O+, I really want to know my kids types, but I have to find a place to do it for me. And my husband should get tested again cause he forgot his type as well. I know I can't really donate my blood to anyone cause of my anemia problem I have had a history with, but it would be nice to know everyone's type. Especially if it is a rare one, this way in case of an emergency you can tell the doctors what type the kid is and you have a better chance nothing bad will happen and everything will turn out fine if they need a transfusion.

Infinitys Echo 11-01-2009 09:29 AM

I'm A neg.

On one hand, I can donate blood to anyone, but I can only accept blood from other O- types, so hopefully I never need a transfusion. Just in case.

While I'm sure most of the time they get it right, don't count on it. My husband was Army as well-retired at 20 years. His tags always said A pos. When he had to be given blood before he died, they found he was O pos, not A. Twenty years with the wrong type.

Sizzla 11-01-2009 01:36 PM

I don't know what my blood type is, but I'd like to find out.

I've heard there is a specific diet for each blood type, so I'd be curious to find out what foods work well for my body.

Kaema 11-01-2009 08:06 PM

I have no clue what my blood type is... xD
I had my blood drawn once to check something or other(not old enough to donate blood), but I wasn't that scared actually...it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. Actually, what was going through my head as it happened was that blood was a pretty color. xD

Porkbackfat 11-01-2009 08:18 PM

If you're looking to find out and don't want to go to a hospital you might look into a wellness store in your area. (Stores that sell homeopathic and other natural remedies). A simple prick on the finger dripped into a light chemical solution can give you your answer. I had no idea what my blood type was for over 20 years and found out the other day doing just that! (A- for what it's worth hehe). As for the needles, while I am not afraid, I cannot give blood due to the tattoos I acquire on a yearly basis. 12 months is the minimum wait time for blood donation after getting a tattoo.

Agent HEY-LEE 11-02-2009 12:08 AM

I recently gave blood at my school and found out I was B+ Which, I think, is pretty interesting because most of the people on my mom's side are A+ I guess it's just another thing I took after my dad. Joy. >.>

Oh, and I'm not afraid of giving blood or anything. Just the chairs. *shivers* They leaned so far back all I could think about was when I'd fall. Not if, when. There was a big guy in one of them next to me, but with my luck I'd be the one cracking my skull open. Dx

L o g a n 11-02-2009 12:17 AM

I have no idea. xD

deweyduquesne 11-05-2009 09:49 AM

my blood type's AB+. I'm pretty sure that means i can give to any1 or something lol

Infinitys Echo 11-05-2009 09:56 AM

I think AB pos is the universal recipient, you can receive from anyone.

blitzy 11-05-2009 10:28 AM

Needles don't bother me that much, I get a little woozey if I watch them stick it into me but once it's in I'm fine. I've only had blood taken a couple of times and I thought it was kinda neat to watch, the only thing that bugged me was the amount that was taken, just when I thought the tech was done she'd pop in another vial to be filled.

I'm not completely sure what my blood type is. It's probably A. Both my parents have A (I don't know if it's positive or negative). I know that my Grandpa was AB and I think my Grandma was O (making my mom AO). So there is the very slight possiblility that I could be O depending on what I got from my parents because if my dad was also AO I coluld have gotten 2 O's.

pinkii 11-05-2009 10:34 PM

...I should probably get my blood type info soon >>'
Apparently I'm a rare blood type but I have no idea.

Plunder 11-05-2009 11:16 PM

Haha, what a topic. I just gave blood for the first time yesterday. The needle bit, which I was freaking out about, was not what I had to worry about at all! It was the after effects. I nearly feinted before the stopped and 'rebooted' my systems 15mins after that. Thank god I was still in the chair when that happened. The lights went out for a good 5minutes to 10. I was woosy for so long I'm thinking I won't do it again.

I still have another 24hours to go till I can call them and figure out my blood type.

pamiishammy 11-18-2009 10:43 PM

I dont know my blood type, I dont like blood at all. I hope I never need to know my blood type and I for sure dont want to find out!!

ichigo8504 11-18-2009 10:58 PM

I'm B+. I guess that is why I am always happy!!^.^.......Okay, I guess that joke sucked.
I do not like needles. I am a 24 year old who almost cries when she has to get her blood drawn.
Don't really care about studying blood. Not my thing.
