The Wolf that Could Not Stay (Indian Story)

I wrote this story out of bored-dom. I will take suggestions because I like suggestions, so if I should do something, speak out!!!

Story:

One sunny afternoon a young girl and her father were walking along the muddy shore of the lake. Her father got into the family canoe he always used to fish for salmon while she walked around the lake looking for shell fish along and shore and wild berries near the trees and bushes.

Behind her, she heard rustling in the bushes. She cautiously walked over to the thick green bushes to find a small dog hiding inside. The dog stuck his nose out of the bush and licked her bare foot. This made her giggle. She then crouched down and picked him out of the bush. He was brown and white, with a wet pink nose. She brushed the loose leaves from his coat.

As she is sitting on the shore of the lake, she sees her father returning. She was excited to show him her new dog, but he was not smiling. He looked at the dog strangely and said, "You may not keep him." She could not understand. He was very small, and friendly. She asked why she could not keep him.

Her father bowed his head and said quietly, "He belongs to the forest. He is a wolf pup and must go back and find his family. Right now he is small and friendly, but soon he will grow to be strong and fierce."

She did not want to disobey nature, or her father, so she let the pup go. She was happy to see him run into the forest because she knew he belonged there.

A nice little story! The only issue is that in the third paragraph down:

It suddenly changes from past tense to present tense. It should be a pretty simple fix though.
