Pixel Critique Please?

http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs51/f/20...KnightSkye.png

Adopted Base. Base from : http://thehword.deviantart.com/
All of the base maker's rules have been followed with the initial posting of the doll here : http://ladyknightskye.deviantart.com...onEO-140490795

So, I'd like to see what you guys think about this doll. For general info, I utilize pixel-by-pixel shading and I've only been dolling for a couple of years. The doll is of an OC design, and she's wearing a space suit.

Robard 11-07-2009 04:54 AM

Very cool makeup! I like the orange against her bright blue eyes.

Is her spacesuit supposed to be extremely thin and absolutely skintight? If not, its shape should depart from her body especially at the joints, and there should be some depth to the fabric when we see the edge of it (around her neck). Even if it is, it's unlikely that we'd see the shape of each of her breasts and her bellybutton so clearly.

Your shading seems to be logically placed, and I really like the shapes in her hair. However, I'd recommend darker shading. It's hard to see the shading on the spacesuit, especially the white parts. I think more distinct shades and highlights in her hair would also be helpful: as it is, the parts of her hair closer to the light source aren't highlighted and the underside of her hair isn't distinctly shaded.

It's really good, but I would never have guessed that it was a space suit, but thats alright, I mean, when you finish it you could work on a background if you wanted to, Maybe an epic space battle. Nah Just kidding, its your do what you want with it, I think its really good.

Tetna 11-07-2009 08:00 PM

oh I love it it is very good I love her make-up mostly it's very festive and lively and it looks great with her eyes though I never would have thought that her outfit was what you said but it looks nice because it matches her and your choice of hair color was very good I think blonde hair would have been a nice choice as well and the redish brown. =) Good job are you going to post more?

LadyKnightSkye 11-07-2009 08:46 PM

@ Tetna: Yeah, I actually plan to do some tweaks on this doll since it's one of my favorites and repost it here. ^^ And, I don't mean, to be a stickler for this or anything, but could you use punctuation when you post in the forum? ^^; It was really hard for me to read what you wrote.

WhiteSerenade 11-08-2009 12:50 AM

It's good. Much more than I can say than my work, but it needs a little more detailed parts to it. Well, it just seems like something is missing from it...

LadyKnightSkye 11-08-2009 03:40 AM

@White serenade: What are you thinking? A background maybe? I don't usually do them, but it could be a new challenge. I don't really want to add too much to the suit itself because it's supposed to be simple.

Purenotes 11-08-2009 05:29 AM

Very good. I love the way you did the lips =)

So, in reply to all the great CC I got:

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs51/f/20...KnightSkye.png

I attempted some folds in her suit and to give it depth. I redid the shading, and also added a background. The background is not done with pixels but with GIMP brushes I obtained from DA.

Anymore comments?

pretty good hun'!!!! :)

Wow that's amazing, I think a lot of sites would love to have you on their staff team for pixel art!

kid-kokopelli 11-17-2009 07:30 PM

I think you could use a greater contrast in your shading of the suit and the skin. That would give her a little more depth. Also I realize that the suit is supposed to be simple. But I think it would help to add some hems or some trimming so that it doesn't look quite so rudimentary.

Your makeup and color pallet is fantastic though. I love the work on the eyes. The highlights in her lips and eyes really make her pop!
:D

zebrastres 11-18-2009 01:31 AM

that looks pretty nice. :]
i would suggest making the lines darker, though. you'd be amazed at how much depth something so simple could do.
also, maybe making the shadows a bit darker would make it look less stark.
especially in the hair, since long thick hair normally has a lot more depth.
it's pixel art, so it's not going to blend like watercoloring. you'll notice where the shadows start and stop.
keep up the great work ! pixeling is really fun. :]

Narule_Mangaka 11-20-2009 05:17 AM

It looks good but I think it lacks some detail.. maybe try going smaller?

MurasakiCrown 11-20-2009 10:22 AM

I think the design is pretty neat, but the shading needs more depth, still.

Screams-Of-Death 11-24-2009 01:05 PM

That picture is very pretty!

Demoncat 11-24-2009 02:18 PM

Its looks pretty good, I really love the designs on her face.

What I would say is that you need to have more colors,, if you maybe five colors for shading it would look more defined rather than having two colors for shading.

As for the hair, it looks fine but I think you need to have different shades, I feel like the colors you're using for shading or too alike ( like try make a palette or look at other picel artist's work to see what I mean. )

And lastly texures. At first I could tell it was a spacesuit, which is fine you haven't really gotten to that yet, what I would suggest is to use a pattern in your suit to make it look more like a space suit or the fabric that you're trying to pixel.

I'm sorry if I sound too harsh, but if you have any more questions feel free to PM me. :)

Ainoryoku 12-02-2009 09:39 AM

this one looks adorable~ i love the colors and face so much -^___^-

Melancholymoods 12-03-2009 09:16 PM

I really like it, I personally don't think I'd have the patience for pixel art but you did a great job (:

LadyKnightSkye 12-09-2009 03:30 AM

Thank you everyone for the critiques! I'm posting up my final try at it. I won't be doing any more with this doll because I'm really liking how it looks. Once again, thanks for all the input. All of your suggestions will be used towards my future dolls, and some of my favorite older dolls. ^^

@ Kokopelli: The problem originally was that the hems were where the orange parts met the white. However, I added some more details so that it would look more intricate.

@ zebrastres: I tried your suggestion about the darker lines and the darker shading in the shadows. And honestly, I sort of like the way I shade. But, I can see where I need to make the shades more distinct.

@ Demoncat: I think your comment on my shading is probably connected to zebrastres' comment on how my shading should be less like a watercolor. Before I went back again I had four shades, and now I upped it to six. And many thanks for the advice on hair! I fiddled around with the shades and I do like the look much better now. I'm fiddling with textures now, but I was satisfied with my third run to go ahead and post. ^^

So, here's the final try:

Lovely new update, I love the lineart for the spacesuit, you did a great job improving your doll! :D

Amber_TheOne 12-10-2009 09:29 PM

That looks good. What program are you using? :yumeh1:

[.j o y z] 12-13-2009 02:47 PM

It's really good! :D
But I think you should add more shading around the face. And the tone of the spacesuit and the skin tone are too alike. In the beginning, I thought she was just pale and that it was a 2 piece outfit.
As well, I agree that there should be more shading and space on the space suit. It looks wayy too skin tight. So you need wrinkles, a little at least at joints and other parts.
Otherwise, great job. XD
