Modern Fantasy

I need help with a Title so any suggestions would be most helpful

As a child, you're allowed to think there are things that go bump in the night, but as an adult you are suppose to put those childhood fears away and that is exactly what I had done. Sometimes though, even if you stop believing that something is real, doesn't always mean you're right. Except for Santa Clause.

I always enjoyed going to the park for hours on end, most of the time just taking pictures, other times I would just sit around and people watch. It's always been an interesting past time and you always learn things about people. The jogger with the self-esteem issues, the mime whose parents didn't hug them enough, and my personal favorite, the rambunctious child on the leash. Oh what a wonderfully entertaining invention. I never thought such a past time would get me in such trouble.

I hadn't noticed the jogger running at his normal time, but that didn't really faze me since that day was for photography. I decided to walk through the many gardens, the sounds of my camera went off a mile a minute as I took each picture of everything around me. I didn't really keep track of the time until my camera started to use its flash. Then, at this point I noticed how soon it would be dark. The idea of being in the park at night didn't really scare me, and I figured that some night pictures would be different than what I was use to taking. I started walking over a bridge that was built over one of the roads that park police used to travel throughout the park. I got to the middle of the bridge when suddenly I hear what sounded like children giggling. I stopped and looked around, but couldn't see anything, so I just shrugged and kept going, until I heard the giggling again, and closer this time. I became annoyed at the idea that some pesky kids were probably trying to pull a prank on me, but just when I was about to turn to yell out, something rushed me, and the last thing I remember was the sensation I was falling and then...blackness.

I woke up, don't know when exactly, and could hear voices around me, but my eyes wouldn't focus so all I saw were blurred shapes. There seemed to be thousands of voices speaking at once, filling my head until I just wanted to scream, then one rose over the rest.

“Bring her to Mother,” cried out the voice, and to me it sounded like a little girl, “ She will know what to do with this one. I told you not to try to scare her!” She sounded very worried, and then another voice spoke up over hers, “ Yeah well I didn't think she would go over the edge now did I?” Obviously a males voice, argumentative and cocky. At this point, I must have blacked out once more because I didn't hear anything else from their conversation. All I thought before I lost consciousness was I hope mother's a nurse.

When I woke up again, my head was pounding, and when I tried to open my eyes, a sudden bright light caused small balls of electricity to explode inside of my head, a groan escaping from my lips. I heard a gasp and then the sound of feet running away, but I didn't want to open my eyes again, didn't ever want to feel that kind of pain any time soon. Soon I could hear voices, and I thought I recognized the little girl from before but I couldn't make out what they were saying. Finally I sensed the lights were turned down, and carefully I opened my eyes to a dimly lit room that I could only describe as a cave. Needless to say I was a bit shocked. I gazed around the room in a delirious wonder, feeling as if I had awaken in some dwarvin city underground. The walls and doorways seemed to have been carved from the Earth itself and I could faintly hear the subway train and realized that I was in some underground cave. I heard another sound and painfully turned my head to see a tall elegant woman come waltz into the room. She wore a silk dress of different shades of purple. Her long black hair curved around an oval shaped face and I was shocked to see violet eyes stare calmly back at me. She gave me a warm smile and sat down on the bed next to me. When she opened her mouth and spoke, a sense of well being filled my body and I thought I could smell lavender with a hint of something else I couldn't place.

“ I am so happy to see you awake. When my children found you so badly injured, I feared the worst.” Her voice was so soft, I found myself being lulled to sleep by it and fought to keep my eyes open. I felt her hand rest gently on my face and the smell of lavender only grew. “Please my child,” She whispered,” If you are tired, rest. Have no fear, your parents know that you are here so rest now.” At that last sentence I couldn't fight against my eyes closing anymore and fell back asleep.

I woke up again, no clue on how long I had slept, but when I opened my eyes, the room was dark save for one lit lantern that hung on a hook near the door. That dull light barely lit the room and instead of giving off light, it created strange dancing shadows and faces on the wall. I pulled the blanket up to my chin, noticing that the top layer appeared to be made of some type of fur, and quickly passed out once more. Strange dreams plague my mind and voices seemed to whisper stories to me that I couldn't understand. One voice, which seemed familiar as an old friend and yet a total stranger, grow in sound over the rest.

“When man was young and inexperienced, we were here as friend, foe, and guide. Then man became greedy and many of our groups were hunted...”the voice faded and a new, childlike and impatient voice took over,” Many of my kind chose to live unseen by man. We hid in corners of eyes, and brief glimpses.” Now all the voices cried out, each telling their tale of man's betrayal and images flashed in my head. Dragons fighting brave knights, mermaids trapped in fishing net, each picture came and went in a flash and the voices now screamed agonies in my head, then the new voices rose, and drowned out the rest. They're voices chilled my heart, and somewhere, whatever animalistic instinct was left in my subconscious woke and was trying to run, to get as far away from these voices as it could, but my body couldn't move. These dark voices were cold, hateful, and each one bit into my very core of everything that was wrong in life.

“We fed from man, and gave him his undying fear towards the dark. We hunted man like the small insectile creature he began as, and then we were hunted, almost wiped out, but a handful of our brothers and sisters survived and flourished in hidden corners, caliginous alleys. Then the voices were gone and the original voice rose once more, bringing back the sense of well being and familiarity that I had been missing.

“After many years, we all were forgotten, placed in stories and fairy tales due to science and religion, but we were never truly gone, instead just dismissed from man's mind all together. Those who could blend with man in his cities did so, but those who could not took to mountains, jungles, and deep oceanic abysses. We are losing numbers little one, many gone from our world completely and something must be done.” Now all the voices were gone, leaving me alone in the darkness of my mind.
