saiyana; omfg italy had the most amazing pasta dishes didn't it? *-* <3333

GrannyJ 12-26-2009 05:55 AM

Unfortunately, going abroad these days it is best to not let people know that you are Americans.

Why couldn't you say you where from America?

Marquisse 12-26-2009 05:56 AM

Ahhh wouldn't it be ovelry obvious that you are one! I guess saying your from canada is a good idea then

Talentless_Muse 12-26-2009 05:56 AM

It's because a lot of foreign countries don't have a very good opinion of Americans right now.

Keyori 12-26-2009 05:56 AM

Marquisse: Apparently American tourists have a bad rep >_>

I wish I had joined Engineers Without Borders at my school a few years ago. I'm graduating in a year so it's a bit late for me to join now :/

Rei Ann 12-26-2009 05:57 AM

Though then what country do I say I'm from when I leave?

wish 12-26-2009 05:57 AM

Yeah. ^^;; People haven't had a good view of Americans for a while so you shouldn't mention it everywhere if you go abroad. I went to europe 4 years ago. And it was advised to not mention that we were from America. But in Paris, some street vendors thought I was japanese... xD!

Talentless_Muse 12-26-2009 05:58 AM

I was thinking about applying to the teach abroad program after I graduate to go and teach English in Japan for a year, but I may have to put that on hold so I can do the Greece trip.

Nanenna 12-26-2009 05:58 AM

Yeah, I've heard all kinds of horror stories about ignorant American tourists abroad doing stupid things that make the whole country look bad.

But... Hawaii's part of America... so wouldn't saying you're from Hawaii be the same thing?

Talentless_Muse 12-26-2009 05:58 AM

Say you're from Canada.

Saiyana2 12-26-2009 05:58 AM

Yes it did but I liked that when we went it was right in the middle of the artichoke season, artichokes are my second favorite food. Lobsters, artichokes and chocolate.

Nanenna 12-26-2009 06:00 AM

I'll have to learn to eat more meat before I can go traveling. I'm so darn picky that I'd just offend every restaurant if I didn't. At least once I get used to chicken and start eating cow I only have to worry about eating kosher.

wish 12-26-2009 06:00 AM

Nanenna; yah. i thought so too. but somehow people seem to bypass "Hawaii is the 50th American state" and go straight to "Hawaii is a paradise that I'd like to visit someday" LOL

it works in our favor. :3

Keyori 12-26-2009 06:00 AM

Nannena, what is the white bow you're wearing? Is it a new item?

Marquisse 12-26-2009 06:01 AM

Alrighty I will keep that in mind then!

Rei Ann 12-26-2009 06:01 AM

But don't people from Canda have an accent? Won't they know I have an american accent?

GrannyJ 12-26-2009 06:01 AM

It is rather strange, but saying that you are from Texas also seems acceptable.
I think that abroad, they may not like Americans, but Hawaii and Texas seem to be special places to them.

Nanenna 12-26-2009 06:01 AM

Hello, Keyori! It's the first EI I got for baking the strawberry (why was it being baked?) but it seems half of everyone got the stars instead. It's really weird. Did anyone ever figure out what's going on with it?

GrannyJ 12-26-2009 06:02 AM

I believe that the decorations were the correct items.
The ribbons will be a different item (possibly now?)

wish 12-26-2009 06:02 AM

It was a glitch nanenna. They will be releasing the scarf you have on later on in the week. ^^; If you bake now, you'll get the stars. :3

Keyori 12-26-2009 06:02 AM

Rei, I would then ask if you could tell the difference between a Mexican accent and another spanish-speaking country's accent (given that they were speaking English that is)

I don't think that most people can really tell

Saiyana2 12-26-2009 06:03 AM

Well I didn;t have any problems with anti-Americanism in Italy.

wish 12-26-2009 06:03 AM

keyori; unless you're in england. XD!! I'm sure those people could tell.

Talentless_Muse 12-26-2009 06:04 AM

Huh. I'd think they'd particularly dislike people from Texas. MAybe most foreigners don't connect the names of the individual states to being the same as "being from America" in general.

Rei, most people aren't going to know a Canadian accent, especially once you start getting into foreign languages and such. Just tell 'em you're from Canada and don't show anyone but officials your passport.
