I was disapointed in how they ended the anime too. If you have a look at the manga, they were nowhere near the end. That episode was only the end of a chapter...

The manga finally finished, so they decided to animate the rest in a new season. They'd stopped the animation because they caught up to the manga author and didn't want to make a bunch of filler.

Eyea; Oh gosh, the end of the manga... I loved it, while at the same time knew what was coming. :'D
