You know, I find myself thinking the same thing about your work as I do my own:

I love the linework, but the color needs some work. And I say this mostly because the color looks like it is competing with your lines. You've got so much going on, some lovely mark-making an energy that just gets lost when you lay your color in.

Mirana 02-05-2010 02:44 AM

Oh! Thank you!

You're completely right about the colouring. It bothers me how I can't seem to keep my colouring's quality up with the line art. For that reason, I've lately been giving people both the line art and the coloured version, so that they can choose to have it coloured a different way in the future.
The next few pictures I do I'm not going to burnish any of my crayon. Just lightly nudge the colour in. Won't be so dramatic, but I suppose that's what you need to do when one is colouring traditionally.

Makes me wonder if I could computer colour any better, and if so, if I should invest in photoshop.

By the way, I've checked out your art - you're amazing!

Ise 02-05-2010 02:50 AM

Well, there are a few other things to consider, too. How large are you drawing? If it's small, than the surface area of the crayons are really going to cover a lot more area than you might want to and in effect wind up going over your lines, even if you sharpen them to a nice point.

Coloring is.. difficult. xD; At least if you're like me and have spent a more excessive amount of time on sketching and linework because it's more enjoyable. I know people on both ends of the spectrum and some in between. I personally prefer linework by far, so my color lacks a great deal. ^^; I think you'll be fine though, you're working with both so eventually you'll find your happy point where the coexist beautifully.

In regards to digital color, if you're going that route I hope you have a tablet. xD A mouse is just painful to try and color with. But digital may not be a bad thing to try, putting layers on multiply to start out with you'll be able to color while leaving your lineart to stand right on top without being lost.

Ah, thank you. I'm not that good though, lol. <3

The proportions are wrong but I love your coloring.

Hey look, its me. ^^

Anyway, your art is very nice.
Linapoo colored one almost looks like it is colored with pastels. I love that.

Mirana 03-26-2010 02:31 AM

Haha, yup, it's you, Lilith.

Thanks for stopping by. *nodnod*
The Linapoo one, I used a heavy hand with my pencil crayons, which, yeah, does tend to look like pastels. I looove colours when they are thick and whatnot. I can't help myself. :3

But I still am trying to improve my colouring, both digital and traditional.

Taviren 03-26-2010 02:58 AM

I love the colors in the one of Lilith's OC (the water one) - it makes me think of stained glass! - but the body doesn't seem to quite flow together right. The 2.0 version is great though.

The one of your 2.0 avatar is amazing! I wouldn't change anything about it. It's fantastic!

Mirana 03-26-2010 03:02 AM

Yeah, that body in the traditional Lilith piece is really awkward, however, I did take a picture of myself for photo reference. Unfortunately, the twist in the torso and the bum sticking out doesn't translate real well into the image itself, making it look awkward. I wasn't sure how to fix that. Oo;

I love stained glass! I love heavy colours that are blended, but I also love thick lines. A lot of my inspiration comes from Alphonse Mucha, look him up - he's brill!

Taviren 03-26-2010 03:06 AM

Cool! I looked him up as you said. Some very cool stuff. Can definately see the inspiration there in the last two line-arts/colored pieces.

Mirana 04-16-2010 07:25 AM

Aaaah, I love the taste of a good update.

melonmilk 04-16-2010 07:54 AM

Gah, and you complimented my art 8'D
I'm feeling big-headed.
Your style is awesome! I love the very last one, and the one of your 2.0 avatar, and the Linapoo one. And like everyone else said, I think the colours do dominate the picture slightly.
But damn it, even with that they're still amazing. .w.

Mirana 04-16-2010 08:19 AM

Nya. I unno.
I don't know if I've really got a style, I can't call it anime, but it's not realism, either.
I'll be updating the coloured ones now that I've got a decent scanner, the colours are a little burned by old scanner.
But thanks for the compliment. :3
