Enough Valentines, Let's Hear it for the Chinese New Year!!!! YAY TIGERS!!!!

It may be February 14th, but this year it isn't all about Valentine's Day / Singles Awareness Day. No, this year it is much better:

HAPPY YEAR OF THE TIGER EVERYONE!!!!
老虎年快乐!!!!

*Yes, I know on Menewsha they are calling it "Year of the Lion Dog," but it is really Year of the Tiger. I'm a Tiger, so in this thread, we are celebrating things TIGER STYLE!!!!

I am also spending the Chinese New Year in China, so if you have any questions on how it is celebrated over here - ask away!

*sets table with dumplings, noodles, and tea* Come feast while we chat!

Fellow Tigers (and related felines such as Yumeh ) get a special treat :yumeh1:

musasgal 02-14-2010 01:55 AM

*attacks the dumplings*
YUM!!!!

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 02:01 AM

I love dumplings too - one of my favorite Chinese foods XD

Some of my favorites:
韭菜鸡蛋饺子 - leek and egg dumplings
黄瓜鸡蛋饺子 - cucumber and egg dumplings

What kinds of dumplings do you like?

musasgal 02-14-2010 02:03 AM

The only one that I tried so far is the pork dumpling and it's so yummy

Nemui 02-14-2010 02:06 AM

Nemui - Last year was the year of the cow/ox. Maybe he was referring to the year it currently was when you asked him? Otherwise, maybe he is not so in touch with his roots . . . .

musasgal - I'm pescetarian, so I don't eat pork. But - pork dumplings are probably the most popular ones in China because the Chinese eat a lot of pork.

ooooh

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 02:44 AM

Should I interpret that as motivation to come to China to eat pork dumplings? If so, the northeast is most famous for their dumplings, but "northeast dumplings" restaurants can be found throughout China.

Dumplings are awesome, I ate so much last night I thought my stomach was going to explode. I'm glad this year there weren't that many firecrackers. Usually they don't stop until very very late at night but last night it only lasted a bit past midnight...or it might be because I passed out too soon in bed to hear anything that happened after that

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 02:55 AM

No such luck as uninterrupted sleep here. The fireworks have been going pretty steadily since yesterday morning, and tend to be pretty loud because they are close. Strangely, they also seem to keep setting of someone's car alarm, but at least that part never lasts long. I don't expect the fireworks to die down until next week.

Where are you celebrating?

musasgal 02-14-2010 03:02 AM

Well, I didn't relise it was Chinese New Years untill a few days ago

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 03:07 AM

musasgal - the Chinese New Year sneaks up on a lot of people. I don't know where you're from, but in the US it is not commonly celebrated except in Chinatowns or college campuses. But even at college celebrations, it is usually only people in Asian Studies who show up >.>

musasgal 02-14-2010 03:08 AM

well, only the chinese communtity celerbrates the Chinese New Year in NZ so I don't really celerbrate it....but I like to
Edit: I'm looking at a website to find out which Chinese Animal am I.

Edit: I'm a goat??? A GOAT?????

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 03:17 AM

Yeah, the situation in NZ sounds similar to the situation in the US.

lol - don't like goats? How does the description fit you? (Also, if your birthday is in January or February, make sure that you got the right animal based on whether you were born before or after the New Year)

"Metal Goats – Years 1931 and 1991
Metal Goats are tough on the outside, fragile inside. Those close to Metal Goats understand and accept this. Metal Goats are very cultural and they’re most appreciative of the arts."
Year of the Goat - Chinese Zodiac Goat

Me:
Fire Tiger – Years 1926 and 1986

Expressive, vibrant and a bit eccentric, Fire Tigers are always looking at the positive side of every situation. Because they’re able to generate excitement in others, they’re considered excellent leaders. When Fire Tigers speak, others listen – and do what they’re told!
The rest of the Tiger description fits me rather well too: Year of the Tiger - Chinese Zodiac Tiger

musasgal - do you feel that the metal goat description fits you?

musasgal 02-14-2010 03:39 AM

Fragile, Arts, Cultural?

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 03:47 AM

I take it not so much. You could try poking around other sites a bit - sometimes the descriptions are worded differently, and might match better.

I'm heading out into the city with the Chinese friend I'm staying with. Be back later!

Antagonist 02-14-2010 12:14 PM

I'm an Earth Snake, though the description doesn't really match up with me at all. :)

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 12:15 PM

If your combination of animal + element doesn't really describe you, maybe just the description for your animal will?

The Enchanted Tiara 02-14-2010 12:16 PM

Hello everyone. I was actually born in the year of the tiger . . . .

Wonderlands 02-14-2010 12:18 PM

There are lots of celebrations happening at the big cities. I love chinese new year! I think Im a dog...

Shimawa_zen 02-14-2010 12:36 PM

Wonderlands - Mmm, I love green tea too! *takes another sip* Have you been to any of the celebrations in a big city near you?

The Enchanted Tiara - Yay! You are the first fellow Tiger to visit the thread! *drapes lucky jade tiger pendant on red cord around neck* Have some refreshments, and feel free to stick around and chat for a bit.

Yay! Were you born in 86 too? Or are you younger or older than me?

I don't know if I'm anything like the year of the tiger and I remember reading my element is fire. I mean, I might have aspects of it, but I don't think I'm nearly as aggressive as all of that.
