I don't think that I would get island fever. I will be spending more time in Asian during grad school, and I have family in the mainland US to visit (although since they live in a cold place, I will likely try to convince them to visit me instead). All in all, I think I'll travel enough that I shouldn't get island fever.

Did you get island fever in Hawai'i?

Infinitys Echo 02-16-2010 05:32 AM

No, I never did. It didn't bother me at all. Sometimes when I would get sad, I'd go to the beach and just stare out at the ocean and think of how far away I was from everyone that I had ever known. But as there were plenty of bad memories, it didn't bother me so much. Just that I was a long way from "home". It was actually comforting though. I love the ocean, and the waves would calm and relax me. And make me think of how beautiful it all was and how good things were compared to what I'd left behind.

Definitely get family to come visit YOU!

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 05:39 AM

I love the ocean too. It always makes me feel better to be near the ocean, no matter how down I am. The ocean always relaxes and rejuvenates me. Sometime lakes and rivers can have a similar effect to a lesser extent, but there is nothing quite like being by the ocean.

I also understand about bad memories about places left behind. I think physical distance can help a lot in the healing process.

I've already been telling my family that they have to come visit me in Hawai'i, and I haven't even been officially accepted into the grad program yet >.>

Infinitys Echo 02-16-2010 05:44 AM

Well, just keep your fingers crossed and hope it comes out in your favor!

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 05:58 AM

I'll probably find out sometime next month. But at least I know that I have an acceptance letter with funding at another great program if Hawai'i doesn't work out.

Infinitys Echo 02-16-2010 06:01 AM

Where's the other program?

Kamikishiro 02-16-2010 06:16 AM

Yay Tigers!

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 06:19 AM

The other program is in Arizona. I visited that campus too, and I like the program, like the professors, and like the other grad students. But the campus is bigger than some cities, I was sick of the food choices after only a few days, the air is dry, and no ocean nearby. I could be happy there, but I think I'd be happier in Hawai'i. Besides - when doing Asian studies, it is great to go to a place with so much Asian influence you can practice your language skills on your way to class and out in the community.

Kamikishiro - are you a tiger too?

Infinitys Echo 02-16-2010 06:46 AM

Zen, Hawaii sounds like it would be so much nicer. I mean, Arizona is in the desert, and I doubt they'd have much variety there.

TejinaShinsen 02-16-2010 09:25 AM

Stable with feet firmly planted in the ground, Earth Goats are conservative, independent and practical, but not very confident in themselves. Most important in life is the family and they truly enjoy all that life has to offer. - Earth Goat

Boy is that way off. I'm independent, but practicality and conservative... HAH...

Oh wait the confidence line fits too... *Hides*

Emo Teddy 02-16-2010 09:37 AM

um....hallow

Rawr.

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 12:25 PM

Took a long nap, but I might be feeling slightly better now.

Emo Teddy - Rawr! Are you a tiger or another animal?

TejinaShinsen - Yeah, the complete description doesn't always apply to everyone, particularly the animal + element combination description.

Infinitys Echo - I agree. While the program at Arizona is good, the location doesn't have a lot going for it. If the program wasn't so strong (and didn't have a professor that I really like), I would never have applied to go there. But the program in Hawai'i is also top-notch, and comes with a great location. As long as I get into Hawai'i and get funding, I am there. (There shouldn't be any reason for them to not accept me - my academic record is really strong. It will probably come down to funding, which I know is tight for them right now.)

Sumerian Manic 02-16-2010 12:28 PM

Yay tigers indeed! *wandered in due to title*

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 12:33 PM

Sumerian Manic - Yay fellow tiger lover! Feel free to have some dumplings and chat a little =D

Sumerian Manic 02-16-2010 12:34 PM

*has some dumplings* MMmmm, how yummy!

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 12:42 PM

Yep! One of my favorite kinds of Chinese food <3 And traditional to eat during New Year

Did you do anything to celebrate the Chinese New Year?

Sumerian Manic 02-16-2010 12:45 PM

No I'm afraid not. I remembered it when I checked in for the event though. It was Valentine's day that kept slipping my mind.

lunanuova 02-16-2010 12:47 PM

Ooh it's the year of the Tiger? Cool. I'm a Rooster though D:!

Sumerian Manic 02-16-2010 12:47 PM

I'm a snake, myself. I like tigers though. :)

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 12:54 PM

Snake is coming up in a few years - Rooster a few years after that. But good to see that we tigers have some fans XD

Honestly, most of the people at this event didn't make the connection that it is the Chinese New Year. And lots of the others didn't know it was Year of the Tiger because Menewsha is calling it "Year of the Lion Dog" :<

Sadistic Deer 02-16-2010 01:01 PM

Happy new year, tigers!

I have no idea which animal I am. >.> <.< My birth date is 3/22/1990.

Beliar 02-16-2010 01:05 PM

Hello! I knew their New Years was around February but I didn't know when.
Sadistic: You are a horse :3

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 01:08 PM

Sadistic Deer - Happy New Year! You are a Metal Horse, like my sister. You can read more about horses here but be sure to pay attention to the general description of horses, not just the metal horse description.

Beliar - Yes, the Chinese New Year falls in January/February, but the exact date changes each year because it is based on a lunar calendar.

Sumerian Manic 02-16-2010 01:11 PM

*Sigh* shame that Tigers and snakes are incompatible...

Shimawa_zen 02-16-2010 01:19 PM

Interesting, I swear that the "incompatible" matches listed on that site are different from what I've read elsewhere . . . .
