Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 05:00 AM

Enjoy it while you can. Many times you never know when you may get a nice chance to relax the way you want to.

Yukichi2 02-18-2010 05:09 AM

your right it's that right now i know that i have three more years of vactions like this so it kind of annoys me that i don't try to do something to get rid of the bordom.

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 05:11 AM

Ah, I see. Something will come up for you to do though. It always does.

Yukichi2 02-18-2010 07:09 AM

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 07:32 AM

Oh, I see. Yes being young and not able to go can make a big difference.

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 10:11 AM

Hello! How is everyone doing?

I made it out of the hotel for a few hours for the first time since getting my cold. I'm not completely over it yet, but I'm glad that I went anyway. Had lunch and dinner with friends and had a good time^^

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 10:24 AM

That's great that you're feeling better and able to start getting out again! I'm doing great here, but will only be on for a few more minutes. It's almost 5:30 in the morning here and I haven't hit the bed yet.

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 10:37 AM

Oh wow - quite a night owl! Well have a good night! I'll likely be around at least part of tomorrow. Tomorrow is my last day in this city before I take a bus to my next destination (train tickets were all sold out because it is a busy travel time). I'm feeling better, but I still am not going to do anything too strenuous tomorrow so that I can recover more. In other good news - the weather has been getting warmer =D

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 10:48 AM

It sounds like it's only getting better for you-that's great! I'll be happy when it starts to warm up here. I really hate this cold weather. I really do need to try to get a little sleep before I have to get my son off to school. I hope to see you tomorrow at some point.

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 12:10 PM

I really hate cold weather too. Choosing to come to a cold place like this in February is almost completely out of character for me, but I really wanted to spend the Chinese New Year with my friend, so I came anyway. I don't regret coming, but I sure am looking forward to moving on to someplace a bit warmer!

It feels strange to have my semester start in March this year. All of my friends who are still in school have already been in classes for a few weeks. But overall I like the school calendar in China better than the one in the United States. In the US, summer break is too long and winter break is too short. Here it is more equal. Have a good day in school tomorrow, and I hope you aren't too tired from being up so late!

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 12:40 PM

Oh, it's not me going to school, it's my son.

How long will you be over in China?

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 12:51 PM

Ah okay. How old is your son?

I'm going to be over here until around the end of June. Haven't decided exactly which day I'll come back yet, but that's what I've got penciled in. That'll give me a chance to see my family for a bit before I start grad school mid-August.

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 12:54 PM

He's my youngest and he's twelve. Bus finally got here. I'm still not quite ready for sleep though, so I'll wandering in and out.

So you'll spend some good time over there then. That should be nice. And still keep you're fingers crossed for Hawaii!

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 01:01 PM

How many children do you have?

Yeah, I'm looking forward to all the things to come while I'm in China this time around. I've already been to two new cities, going to my third new city in two days, and my semester will be in yet another new region of China. I'm psyched, because it's someplace I've been wanting to go for over two years, and now I'm going there for a whole semester.

Waiting for news from Hawai'i is agonizing. Why can't they start processing applications on a rolling basis instead of waiting to see if any more come in?

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 01:06 PM

I've got three. Another son who's 19 and a daughter who's 23.

I love hearing you talk about your experiences and your schooling. You sound like you're having some wonderful experiences and are enjoying yourself completely while working hard to get your education. That's the way to do it! I may not have a lot of comments about it, but it's because I just like hearing about it.

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 01:23 PM

Wow, you're kids are pretty spread out! My sister and I are only 3 1/2 years apart, so it is hard to imagine a 7+ years age gap between siblings.

Thank you. I try to tell about my experiences in an interesting way. I've been to China a few times before, all during college as part of my studies, and I've traveled a lot while over here. I still feel like I've got a lot to learn about the language and culture, but I've come a long way in the past 4 1/2 years. It will be interesting to meet the other Americans that are doing the same semester program as I am. I've never met any of them before, but as far as I know, I'm the only one who has been to China before (but I think a few of them have at least studied Chinese). I'll have to remember what it was like the first time I came abroad 4 years ago, and use that to try to relate to them, and help them make the transition.

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 02:10 PM

Well, my youngest was one of those "oops, not suppose to happen things", even though I knew it was going to because of circumstances. I was NOT going to have anymore. Things happen in life and change though, and he's really been a joy in my life. It really is much better to have kids when you're older. You can enjoy it more and you can also do more for them (usually).

Your Welcome! You just sound so involved in both the educational side and the cultural side, and enjoying the new experiences. It's hard to find comments to say, but just know I really like hearing you talk about it.

Shimawa_zen 02-18-2010 02:23 PM

Yeah, I've heard that those "change of life babies" come around once in awhile. I agree that it is better not to have kids too young. Some people start popping out babies when they are in their teens or early 20s, and I think that that is a bad age to have kids. Hardly anyone that age is mature enough for children. But parents that wait a few more years to have kids have a much better success rate.

Yes, I am very involved with both the educational and cultural sides. I love studying it and I love experiencing it, and think that the two work best when done together. You can't be a good scholar of any aspect of China unless you have spent time in China, and really get to know the people and the culture. There are a lot of things you just can't learn out of books. I've spent an unusual amount of time over here during undergrad, and I hope to do the same during grad. Reading about something inspires me to want to see it. Seeing something inspires me to want to read more about it. It is a wonderful cycle, and definitely what good scholarship is made of.

Infinitys Echo 02-18-2010 10:14 PM

I was one month shy of twenty one when I had my first. I was about thirty two when I had my youngest. I did much better when I was older.

I'm glad you're enjoying and learning at the same time. I may see young people going to college and talking about their work there, but not like you. It's all nose to the grindstone, which I can understand. It's not like you're playing or anything-you have to put forth effort. I just like it when I see someone having a good time while they're doing it. It seems you've also been fortunate enough to be able to travel and your travels go right along with your education. It's like having a job you love. Nothing but good can come of that!

sushi_mew 02-18-2010 10:30 PM
