You most likely had the paste form, didn't you? There are certain things done to the plant that causes those harsh flavors to come out really strong. Reyo likes adding a little wasabi powder to her five alarm chili.

Well it was on a piece of sushi, It had shrimp on the top of it and I didn't notice until I bit into it. Eeeeeeeh, it was like a great hot lump of disgusting muck in my mouth. XD It was so bad I couldn't even spit it out.
