Yay for our future teacher-types!
(They so don't get the respect they deserve...) |
Thank you both, Spunky and Jedi =^^= It's always nice to hear that folks appreciate our work. It's not easy...I've got ADD and a bit of germaphobia myself, so the running around, screaming, drooling, and diaper changing that can happen gets a bit overstimulating at times, but it's so worth it to see the progress they make =^^=
|
Some of my dearest friends are special needs.
|
@Roch: Sounds like you've made some progress within yourself as well. :D
|
Two more pages guy.
|
special needs? D: am I missing an interesting topic?
|
Roachi works with special needs kids. *nods*
|
we are getting real close to page 1350.

@Jedi: I really have. I got some wonderful advice from one of the lead teachers in the SRC at an upper elementary school that really helped me understand what we were doing. He said, the kids aren't going to be who they really are until they're much older. So our job is just to focus on the quality of their school day. To treat them like you would if they were your younger sibling and all will be well. It's worked so far and helps me get over any of my little "gross-out" moments =^^=
---------- Post added 01-21-2013 at 01:31 PM ---------- @Poet: I sub at a school for children with autism and other special needs [yes] |
Aww that would be such a fun job!
Ooh... autism ^^ so much fun to interact with aspies! So jealous! |
@Kirin: There's no "A" in my name =^^=;;

I have worked with autistic kids before. There is this family I know the two boys are both autistic. They and there sister are being raised by their grandparents, who are my parents age. Well their grandpa, who they call dad, was taking their mom, though they call their grandma mom and their mom by her first name. Anyway their mom had a doctor appointment and my mom and their grandma were going out to lunch. Oh their mom is special needs as well. Well their grandpa and mom were in for her doctor appointment and the oldest boy, who is 12 pulled his brothers hair. Then he, who is eight pulled his sisters hair. She's four, almost five. I had a firm talk with him. I asked him if he liked it when his hair was pulled, and he said now and I said his sister didn't like it when he pulled her hair. I also pointed out that she was crying. He did feel bad as he loves his sister a lot.

I really do enjoy my job, though I'm exhausted by the end of the day! Just last week I had to change three diapers in the course of an hour AND deal with a surprise fire drill in the middle of one of them! But according to administration, I couldn't have handled it any better =^^=

Check your trades Silver :)
I find autistic people easier to understand than normal people personally... |
