College, is it really that healthy?

I wonder this because I don't really feel great today and I don't want to go to my classes, but I still have to. Thinking about this it makes me wonder how many other people will pull themselves to class still even if they feel sick. A lot of classes can have strict rules about attendence and if you miss a day you fall so far behind. These classes are expensive so most kids won't skip out and risk losing their money.

What do you guys think? Is college really all that healthy?

Saisei 02-23-2010 02:05 PM

All it does is make the people decide whether they're REALLY too sick to go to class. Obviously if they can go, they're not too sick.

masked_egg 02-23-2010 02:06 PM

College is healthy because a person has more freedom to do what they want and to make their own mistakes. This is where they learn to deal with actual situations more like the real world. It's healthy also in the sense where you are freer to be yourself. There are less pressures socially and emotionally. Having a bit more pressure from your classes is a small price to pay I think.

If you skip a day of work you'll be far behind because no one will wait for you (unless you're the boss), you're only allowed a few days sick for work before you start getting in to trouble and so on and so forth.
If a person can't survive college, then I don't know how that person will do during that next step.

I can't say that I'm doing very well myself. I have my mini thesis due in a couple of days and look where I am, in front of my computer. :D

say whut??

College is healthy! it molds you into the path you wish to pursue latter in life. Not only does it help you grown in areas that you need to, but it also polishes the finer points you already posses.

and yes, i know how you feel about the cack regarding attendance and what-not. i work full-time and go to college. not an easy feat, especially when you have laboratory requirements that matter with your course work.

But hang in there! a lot have made it, so will you as long as you do your best!

Sammi 02-23-2010 04:50 PM

College is great. XD Higher education is always healthy... college gives you more opportunities, etc.

But in the physical sense, sometimes you just don't feel well. You have to evaluate your priorities. Is it worth missing your class? What would happen if you missed it? What would you be missing? Could you teach yourself? I had a horrible stomach bug last week and missed a lot of class. I've been catching myself up. It's just a matter of, how bad will it be if you miss it? How will YOU feel if you miss it? Sometimes it's better to be uncomfortable than stressed out. It just comes down to priorities.

*sigh* Except for those of us who can't go to college because of the stupid recession... I'm 19, I have to go to school with my mom, and she's still telling me what to do. >_>

Other than that though, college (or rather, in my case until I can get into Hofstra, adult vocational training center) is good for the soul. You learn things like responsibility and autonomy and all that other adulty feel-good stuff. ^_^

Here's my story:

On the night before I had 2 exams, I was in the hospital ER, taken by ambulance. I stayed there all night, and was released the next morning before my exams started. I had time to run home to shower and change, and grab my things. Then, off to exam #1. After I finished that, I had to go to Urgent care. They got me in right away, and I was out in time to take exam #2.

So yes, it is worth it when it needs to be. But if you don't absolutely have to be there, and going may further jeopardize your health, then take a day off.

Deviant 02-23-2010 05:58 PM

I think college can shape your personal character, but on an emotional level? EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY!

I'm not such what the attendance policies are like on other campuses, but here it's two unexcused days and then after that, you drop a FULL letter grade (some professors it's only half).

While I agree that if you're paying money to go to a class, you should make it your priority to go for what you paid for. But on the other hand, it's absolutely RIDICULOUS that if I'm sick, or if I have a legitimate reason not to be in class, that I'm basically paying the college to drop my letter grade just because I wasn't there for a class or two. Bullcrap. Especially for the fact that I commute to campus (20 minute drive), and for all anyone knows the weather could have been bad, or I could have had car trouble.

Not to mention the fact that some people (like moi), are working a 20+ hour a week job, along with a 15+ credit hour college schedule, and the stress does get to you. And I'm sure to people who have financial aid, and don't need a job it's all fine and dandy, but there is absolutely no consideration for the working student.

It's not uncommon for me to find at least ONE person either crying, sick, or looking very upset on campus whenever I go.

No, policies at colleges can be ridiculous.

ISOS Duke 02-23-2010 06:09 PM

When I say healthy, I don't mean education wise, I mean actual health and yeah, even emotional. I know more education is good, but I mean at the costs, and not money wise.

^^^Kinda what I meant^^^

I get what you guys are saying though. I know how school is good and whatnot, but all I know is that I should probably stay home on days that I go to school but I can't afford it. If I miss one day I'm so far behind...

Tilly 02-23-2010 06:26 PM

Don't live in res, or hang out with people who live in res, they spread disease like rats. That's how you get sick fast.

god, it's like anything. To people super sustainable to stress and shit, of course you'll see them freak out and bawling in the chem building's 4th floor stairwell, but if you'd ever work with them, on a bad day they'd be bawling it up by the watercooler. And, jesus, you need to learn the meaning of knowing people in your classes. It's the only way to maintain a grade and make sure you don't die. When I missed last friday cuz I was in the ER, I got all my notes and assignments and then I just read my books like a keener to catch up plus. That's kind of what the books are there for.

I love university. I love the freedom and I love having coffee in class and learning what I want to learn and picking my own schedules. But I also am in a smaller university, with cheaper tuition.

If you don't like it, leave. It's not for you. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Better than paying thousands of dollars for a shitty arts degree that won't get you anywhere.

Kyatia 02-23-2010 06:28 PM

I don't think its healthy considering if your stressed you get sick easer and if you are already sick and you come to class you risk contaminating everyboady else and your not really sure if its just a cold or worse....

Elsa Shawcross 02-23-2010 06:46 PM

College will actually challenge your health with the higher demands you will receive. It's up to you to maintain your health at all times. You'll be forced to break your body clock when you need to do intensive research on the field you're taking up. Some of my friends who are Fine Arts students are actually only sleeping 3 hours a day finishing projects and such. I used to take up Engineering and it wasn't a walk in the park to do research on something like a microchip.

Just my two cents. :P

Nissa 02-23-2010 06:52 PM

Germ wise you mean? It's as healthy as any large body of humans in contact with each other can be. Also, unless there is something wrong with your immune system, it's probably pretty healthy for it. Nothing boosts your immune system like a constant workout. :)

nightlydeity 02-23-2010 08:48 PM

I puked on a prof. once....yea not my best moment. I also went to class one year with pink eye in both eyes for 2 weeks! If I didnt show up for both these classes, my grade would have gone down and I just couldnt let that happen. But then I thought afterward how many people I got sick just trying to make sure I didnt flunk that year. Some profs have sympathy for you, others flat out tell you to drop the class. Stress makes it all the worse. Luckily I havent been too sick other than those two scenarios, and those are things I just couldnt avoid.

Saria Florite 02-23-2010 08:52 PM

I took a year off due to the fact that I have no idea what I want to do with my life.
I have the bad feeling if I don't take a course this year the only thing that will be bad for my health would be my grandmother -.-"

Nadhja 02-23-2010 09:21 PM

college is anti-healthy O.O
too many drugs and parties going on... or at least there r down here in JWU Providence lol
when ur not getting high or partying, ur eating urself fat

Xxbl00dyxangelxX 02-23-2010 09:43 PM

In high school we had an exam policy if you missed three days you had to take an exam and it was 20 percent of your grade..if you missed 6 days you had to take an exam and it determined whether you passed or failed the class.. so if you had an A in the class you could still fail the class.. They decided that that was kinda cruel and did away with it i think..but I'm not sure..because I'm in college now..

If I have 3 unexcused absences they drop a letter grade...so If I missed english and had a c in the class..at the end of the year if i had three absences it'd turn into a D..and I'd have to retake the class...not cool.

DuctTapeDuck 02-24-2010 01:07 AM

If you're ever not feeling up to par when you're at college, always take a look at your schedule. if you're pulling all nighters, procrastinating, hanging with friends and then going to classes, yea thats not too healthy. You're more likely to get sick that way and not want to go to class. Trust me, been through four years of that already lol. But really, its all about maintaining some sort of schedule. Even if that schedule includes a nice little nap at 2 in the afternoon then running to class with 5 minutes to spar hahahaa. Remember eating well, drinking enough fluids (and not just beer my friends! haha) and getting sleep is important!!

and yes while some college policies are ridiculous, think of it this way. I work 40 hours a week. 4 days a week, 10 hours a day. those are long days, and i'm always tired. If i wanna go out on the weekend i have to make sure i dont do too much or i'll be too tired for the week. On top of that, germs pass easily and frequently throughout my work place. If someone has a cold, expect everyone else to get it. we only get to call out 3 times (considered points) during a full year, Jan-dec for being sick. I also get 3 or 4 personal days a year. when you think about it? its not a lot at all, and very easy to get fired (they are VERY strict on time off). Not to mention if you're 6+ minutes late (they give us a 5 minute grace period) that is Half a point which is a part of the 3 points we get throughout the year.

Its all preparing you for the real world, and let me tell you, I would kill to be back in college right now. why oh why didnt i go for the 5 year plan! hahaha :)

Well going to school with your mom sounds....interesting? I couldn't stand to do that, honestly, because my mom would scare my friends and boss me around, which is very annoying. (Yeah...) The reccession really does suck tho...
College is healthy because you are getting a higher education, which results in more opportunities. (Yay!) Of course everyone gets sick, and maybe can't go in for class, but there are ways of getting past the 'catch-up game'.

Queen Fool 03-20-2010 11:16 PM

In my highschool, we can miss 10% of the days in a year, but if your parents call and bitch they ignore that rule. In the real world, you can't just not show up once a week and expect your boss to not care.

dieyousucker 03-21-2010 02:21 AM

college is closer to reality.. and yes! it is expensive! but its for your own future anyway... if you are too sick then why would you force yourself to go to class?... i myself drag myself to school even though i dont feel good... probably because i love going to school,, its like my home. all my life, i've been studying and now.. it all pays off, am graduating from college,, and i tell you... all the sacrifices i've done in the past was all worth it. ^_^

Mimiroppu 03-21-2010 09:53 AM

Health-wise... no. xD It stresses you out, forces you into sleep deprivation, and either because of scheduling or money problems, prevents you from eating good meals or full meals -- much less BALANCED meals! You get up and go when you're sick and run yourself ragged... which makes it all worse. Then when you finally can't actually get out of bed anymore, you fall so far behind and start the sleepless/stress process all over again! Also, the atmosphere at a lot of colleges isn't a good one. >__>

Taviren 03-23-2010 06:11 PM

I get what you're saying. I think I ended up skipping classes a grand total of seven days out of my entire four year college career. And even those days, I still went to my Japanese class. There's just no way to catch up in that class. I remember one time I had the stomach flu, I puked on the way to Japanese class, still went to class, and skipped the rest of my classes for the day.
