Tips for a first time dyer of hair?

Im going to dye my hair green using semi permanant dye called splat. I plan to do just the tips of my hair. My hair is dark brown so I have to bleach it to get the dye to stand out. Are there any hair care products that are recomended in washing my hair or condidtioning it? Ive heard that it is a lot to put the hair though...

Also I plan to cut the split ends off of my hair before or after i dye and bleach it? should i cut it off before or after?

If your hair is darkbrown I would recommend letting a professional hairdresser do the bleaching for you. Then afterwards you can dye it green yourself (if it lowers the price.. if it's the same price I would let the hairdresser do that too!)

The best is to cut your split ends off after you dyed your hair ^^ At least, that was what my hairdresser did!

I used to dye my hair pink.. but I would always let my mum (or a friend) do at least the bleaching since it's pretty dangerous stuff.. you seriously don't want to get it in your eyes or something @[email protected] So.. if you do decide to do it yourself, please be very carefull!

About what brand and sorts I can't really help you cause I'm from the Netherlands.. and unless you are from Holland too I don't think your country has the same brand!

I would cut it before dying it.
Bleaching damages the hair and in my experince, dries it out too (just the bleached parts), so I recommend having some good conditioner.
Also, it might take quite a bit of bleaching since your hair is dark. I bleached the ends of my hair once and it turned out more like a dark gold. The hair dresser said that was as light as she could get it but I don't believe her :stare:

omg dont EVER dye ur hair black and then decide u want to bleach it a week after >.< bad things happen... i know from experience...

blankgirl 02-23-2010 09:29 PM

@leah- i dont realy have a lot of money but i will look into the haidresser thing. (I got the kit on sale >.<) my hair is also pretty long so i should be able to cut off a good bit and still be ok

@gloom i have some good conditioner and shampoo but i might want to straghten my hair sometimes, i also have a product that i put on my hair to protect it from the heat. how long would you recomend that i should wait before i straghten my dyed hair?

@N-chan i have never dyed my hair before but i would like to, I probaly will never dye it black because its so dark there realy wouldnt be that much of a difference >.<

lol well ive dyed my hair black plenty of times and there wasnt much of a dif XD
but yeah, u should get ur hair trimmed first and then apply the bleach the correct way, let it set for however it says (usually 45 mins) (dont scratch ur head >.< itll burn and if u scratch it, itll make it worse) then fully wash ur hair and apply the dye, let it sit longer than it says to... just in case lol... but since u havent dyed or bleached ur hair before, the bleach should work really well.... my hair is wicked dark and the first time i bleached my hair, it came out white, so u should be fine =D

i suggest using manic panic hair dye, it works very well, but use the bottles, not the ones in the photo

ive used hot hot pink, enchanted forest, and purple haze... pink was the first one i did and it came out so bright and vivid, it just popped in the sunlight XD

Always cut your hair first. Tell the stylist what you are going to do so that she can visualize how it look and cut the hair suit it.
I would use Loreal's lightening dyes that work with dark hair. You NEVER bleach your hair on your own. Professional's should only do it.

Test the dye on your skin. Make sure there is no allergic reaction.
Have someone dye the tips. Don't do it on your own. You'll mess it up. I've tried.

Watch the sales. Make sure you get a color care and a moisturizer in your shampoo and conditioner. If you can. Save up and Nexxus humetress, it's the best on the market.

use a 30 volume bleach kit, and make sure its spread out evenly. this is your best best if you dont have the money to bleach professionally. be aware that after you get regrowth, you must bleach your roots last if you plan on bleaching again and re-doing your hair. i dont recommend using permanent dyes. my hair is currently a weird bluey green at the moment. you can see it in my profile.

Mm, 40 is recommended for the darkest hair. I have blonde/brown hair and my hairdresser always used 40.

Bleach burns. It burns a lot. There's a difference between the bleach burn and an allergic reaction, though. Bleach burn should go away within 24 hours. Allergy would last longer, I believe.

@Agnes: Have you ever tried to bleach a black t-shirt? Similar principal. You can only do so much without ruining it completely, and even then it won't be the lightest! Consider also the thicker the hair, the more likely there is colour deep down and if it was to "soak" longer, the odds of ruining the outer layers are much greater.

Be sure to sleep on a dark pillowcase for awhile as well as use a towel that you don't mind ruining. There will be colour bleeding.

Besides all that, my only other warning to you is consider things like having a job and what hair colour can do. Many places will not hire someone with an unnatural colour of hair. Some places have grounds to fire you if you dye your hair an unnatural colour.

If your hair is brown, let the professional bleach it, sure the box may be cheaper if you do it at home...but if you dont know what you are doing, you could actually spend more money in the long run trying to repair it. Take it from a girl who past the colorist portion of beauty school, and nothing else....lol. After letting the professional bleach your hair, you can ask her about projects to use, something off the shelves Dove, Tresemme, Nexxus, and believe it or not Horse Main and Tail shampoos and conditioners will work wonders on damaged hair, Dove, Nexxus, and Tresemme both have great color keepers, but I cant realy think of any for girl color you can get off the shelve. Manic Panic though is a great hot color dye (as I see above some one posting). Their color lasts and conditions (plus glows under black light!). If you watch your professional bleach your hair, it should be easy to do the box sets to maintain your roots (though I truly wouldnt advice it if your hair isnt at all close to blond).

It depends on the amount you wash your hair (and whether or not the shampoo is for color) and the type of dye. Brights fade to pales, and some colors will mix if you are blond not platinum (like blue goes to green).

manic panic, for me, lasted a couple of weeks, it does fade but its so bright... i dont ever advize going to bed with wet hair lol (random fact) itll bleed all over ur bed (personal experience)
as for bleaching ur hair urself, i wouldnt do it.... i had my sis bleach it for me cause ull get a better result, even if the person doesnt know what theyre doing, cause they can c ur whole head, not just the front and sides
i whole-heartedly believe in doing things urself instead of wasting a lot of money on the professionals, cause even they mess up (example: ive done all of my piercings except for my tongue, my ex got his tongue pierced by the same guy and he messed it up big time)
if it doesnt come out right, u just have to remember that its just hair, itll grow out lol

Cut your hair first, and if you're going to do this at home, get a friend to help you- preferably one who's good with her hands or has experience in hairdressing.

For dark brown hair I would recommend going with a developer up to 30 but no higher (especially for virgin hair since it's never been chemically treated.)
The higher the number, the more peroxide, the faster it lifts, and the quicker it can damage the hair.
You don't need to go for a white-blonde if you're dying your ends green- a medium to pale yellow will give you a vibrant green and actually keep it from fading as quickly since there is still a minute amount of pigment left in the hair to hold the green in.

I love Paul Mitchell's Inkworks, but they're hard to come by if you don't have access to a CosmoProf or other stylist shop- Manic Panic is also a great line. And keep in mind that you can always touch up with your remaining product as the green fades.

I have been dying my hair for years. If you go to my profile, you'll see a few pics of me with my glorious green locks.

1) Without washing, bleach hair to that false beach blonde color. The time will differ depending on how dark your hair is.

2) Wash thoroughly and condition! Towel dry.

3) Apply color from bottom, up. Remember that the hair on the bottom/ closer to the neck is more resilient to change so it might take a couple of jobs to get that part the same color as the rest of you.

4) Rinse, do not shampoo. Condition.

When it comes to re-charging your hair, remember this: Never dye dirty. Bleaching is fine but you want to wash your hair before dying.

Depending on the type of dye, you might not want to wash it for a couple of days.

I am currently sporting the Iguana Green from Special Effects. I find that their color lasts a bit longer than Punky Color and FAR longer than Manic Panic. The dye is a bit more abrasive to your hair so I don't recommend recharging more than once a month.

I do have the same shade green you'll be using by Slat. I don't have a review for them.

I am not a fan of Manic Panic at all. I feel that their colors are weak and that they do not last long enough.

I am a Punky Colour (Jerome Russell product) veteran. Their product smells nice and feels great on my scalp. It's more conditioning than most dyes. It lasts anywhere between 4 and 6 weeks depending on what kind of shampoo you use.

You also have to keep in mind the hair care you use and routines you do. Color safe shampoo and conditioner typically is better for colored hair but, I would stick with the manufacturers form of color safe hair care since these will work WITH the dye you have chosen. I have also found that when you blow dry your hair, the color shines brighter. But you need to remember that you should not be washing your hair every day. The oils that your scalp makes for your hair is good for your hair. Also don't blow dry every day. Some people seem to think this has a healing effect on your hair but it really only damages it. Usually if you blow-dry every two to three days, you get the same effect even after the shower.

...mom knows a lot about hair...if you have any questions, let me know.
