oooohh that indigo stallion is SO pretty

Chikuma 04-20-2010 03:37 AM

Hi ya Dark. Hey Birdie ^-^
Sorry I was away for a few days. Why are you sad Birdie?

Bound Birdie 04-20-2010 03:49 AM

Oh I had to see this long movie in my Sustainable Materials class

here is a far abbreviated version

Chikuma 04-20-2010 03:56 AM

That is depressing. Which is sad because so many plastics are recyclable. Kinda crazy that most of it comes from land.

Bound Birdie 04-20-2010 04:05 AM

yeah it's true I think the stat I heard was only 5% of plastic is recycled globally and even when you DO recycle plastic after so many times it just melts down to a toxic waste T.T It's actually kind of funny because you can make a cellulose plastic out of hemp that's more durable but biodegradable and my teacher is all pissed that America can't get over the "hemp stigma" as she called and just start making that stuff instead
but I really don't see them doing it anytime soon

Chikuma 04-20-2010 04:09 AM

Yeah it is sad because there are so many thing we could do that would be better for the planet but personally I think a bit thing that is in the way is people are always out to make money. Good for the planet and us isn't always profitable plus change isn't easy for people to accept.

Plastic out of hemp sounds cool. It kinda reminds me how they started using bamboo wood for flooring and such instead of different types of trees that take years to grow. Bamboo grows so fast and is so plentiful it was a great idea.

PS- like your avy ;)

Bound Birdie 04-20-2010 04:28 AM

lol thanks! This is actually birdie...normally lol well black hair only cuse its hard to keep my hair that color all the time T.T and no severed head lol >.<

Bamboo is pretty awesome matures in 5 to 7 years rather then 100. I Like cork flooring best though! Not only is it like soft and warm all the time but it's from the bark of the tree, so you never even cut the tree down! They found it's actually healthy for the tree to be able to produce a new bark every 10 years or so. Plus you can dye it and put a glaze over it to make it look REALLY shiny and cool or you can leave it all natural and earthy, and if you do that you don't even have to mop it! unless I mean you throw up on it or something o.O

I'm not even going to start on the economics of this though cuse it will only piss me off, long rant short in the long run most of this stuff could make them MORE money, (because the cost of product is a LOT lower) but it requires these major infrastructure changes and new equipment and there to lazy to change and worried about the up front costs.
As for hemp products well I could write a book on that lol but really if you want to know more about that there's this movie (do you have netflixs?) called Hemp Revolution, about how it can be used for EVERYTHING I'm not kidding, not just food and fabric but they made a octane out of it so we could fuel our cars and electricity with it! Plus paper and building materials. This guy was talking about how they had built a machine that could compress it it (like a particle board) into building supplies like 2X4's and shit o.O it's INSANE! What REALLY pisses me off to is industrial hemp isn't even a drug (there's like.3 thc as opposed to 5-30 like weed) so it makes no sense to not be taking advantage of it as an extremely cheap and readily available/renewable resource

Chikuma 04-20-2010 04:41 AM

Wow that flooring sounds cool. My friends want to get a glass counter top. Basically it's bits of broken glass they make a counter out of. They tend to be very colorful and cool. Yeah it is true on how frustrating it is on making good changes. I don't see why they won't start working with Hemp more, especially if it is so versatile.

It's funny because I think we need to make bigger steps in taking care of the planet but what frustrates me about a lot of environmentalists is they tend to know very little about the environment or how an ecosystem actually works. I hate to say this but cutting down trees is not going to kill the planet . . . it is renewable resource and often is healthy for forests if the cutting is done correctly. Granted I'm not saying go cutting everything down but there is a balance. It isn't use everything or save everything, often times the best place is somewhere in the middle. Like hunting, it isn't just for sport but to keep the deer population in balance so they don't over populate and send the ecosystem into an unbalance. You may or may not agree with me but that is how I feel.

It's sort of how people think humans shouldn't eat meat. I find this funny because in nature you have carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. It's okay for other animals to eat other animals but yet some people think it is wrong for humans, which are omnivores, not to eat meat. Granted if it's a personal choice not to then hey more power to you, guess it just gets on my nerves when some people make a big huge deal about it.

lol I hope this all makes sense, sort of went on a rant. I guess it comes down to the old saying "all things in moderation."

Bound Birdie 04-20-2010 05:10 AM

lol nope I totally agree >.< * cheesy Buddhist accent* "Balance is KEY! The light and the dark, one can not exist without both"
I think the big REAL problem is overpopulation. WE are out of balance WITH nature (people > planet) o.O Its a touchy subject I know but seriously things are way out of hand. Like with trees used to be there were thousands more trees then people, who would cut a few down use them for there home, furniture, fires and then they would PLANT some to make up for it. Now there are thousands more people then trees, and they all want everything that we use trees for and we don't properly replace them *huff* You right they are completely renewable but it takes time, and we seem to need them before there done. Plus it's rare that were are responsible about anything it seems, and we have mcdonalds plowing down rainforest to make space for there cows o.O Like you said it's all about the money
personally I could never give up meat... chicken is TASTY ...and most of the chickens I meet I pretty mean so I don't really feel bad for them.XD I dunno I would like to know how the animal was cared for. Like free range (They don't sound spoiled do they) chicken I think does taste better. Animals get to live a long happy life and then be consumed as nature intended >.< Though I think what would honestly happen would be : Me owning my own chickens, not eating them but for the eggs, but then one would piss me off and BOOM chicken dinner! o.O which probably is horrible of me and the other chickens with think I'm a tyrant lol
Oh I DO know what your talking about! there doing a lot of cool stuff with recycled glass, have you seen the "pebbles" ? They tumble the glass so it's all smooth and you can make paths out of it and stuff! I was these REALLY pretty purple ones that I would totally use for a garden pathway  but there so expensive *pouts* it will have to be a short path XD

Chikuma 04-20-2010 05:22 AM

I honestly don't think overpopulation is a problem. Two reasons for this 1- ever drive through Idaho? There are still many very empty places on this planet. 2- Mother nature. I think Mother Nature honestly does a pretty good job of wiping lots of people off the face of the earth and many times in one fell swoop. I know that sounds horrible but it is pretty accurate. I think the main problem is instead of living in areas that may not be as desirable yet empty we all horde to certain areas and overcome the wildlife in specific places. I think things wouldn't be nearly so bad if we sort of spread out more evenly, if that makes sense.

Also we can't forget basic crime and war. Granted I know that the climb of births is higher than the deaths but I think in the end things will balance out.

Then again this is just my opinion.

Awe I killed the thread

Bound Birdie 04-22-2010 06:03 AM

Oh no! You didn't I wrote a big reply.... I dunno what happened to it...*pouts* No wonder I hadn't seen your reply.
Well In my response to your two reasons ... again lol these will be a little abbreviated then the original. Yes Idaho is beautiful! lol maybe it's my anti socialness but I love all the farms and sheep ranches >.< So green and yes a very small amount of people >.< But yeah Wyoming o.O North Dakota lot's of these places seem really dead, but they still have there own bustling metropolis and if you took the millions of people crammed into the small amount of space in places like new york and LA and tried to give everyone 5 acres of land you would run pretty quick. Plus murder and what not just even out catholics >.< Not to mention that it's become a fad to have as many kids as you can to get a tv show...
I will agree with you that mother nature does it's best to keep us in check with natural disasters. The more we pollute the more the temperature rises and offsets the balance in air. Weather is what fixes the imbalances and that's why were having more and more crazy disasters. (well we've always had some but they say there has been a dramatic increase in the past 20 years) I dunno maybe I think we over populated because I think there SHOULD be lots of place that have no human existence and I think it's really sad that you can see the handy work of men everywhere even in some extreamly remote places. Or it could just be that I hate people and don't think we can as a collective be responsible. Have you heard about the "eco foot print" thing? I dunno I think the earth could support a population of this size if we were all responsible and caring but I just worry about the way were headed and I don't see things like "the octa-mom" helping you know?
Sorry for the huge debate... I guess it's not to abbreviated lol but I just wanted you know where I was coming from!

Oh and THANK YOU for the commons! Again jeeze you gotta give me a chance to catch up to you >.<
