"Probably not," Glory agreed. "Nana should be okay for a couple days, I hope."

"She should be all right if she takes your warning seriously," Léan murmured, barely paying attention to the show anymore.

"I think even if she doesn't take the warning too seriously, she should figure out something is up when Archie and Damon leave," Glory said. "She's not stupid, she'll know something is wrong, and that it's probably best to stay away from the water, at least."

Léan nodded, privately agreeing. He was worried, of course, but he was sure everything would be all right in the end...as long as his father didn't lure anyone into the water.

Glory started flipping channels again as the show on Food Network ended. Eventually, she settled on Discovery, where Deadliest Catch was running a marathon.

Léan watched the show curiously. For someone who naturally disliked humans, he sure didn't know a whole lot about their world. He did know about the fishing industry, as well as the crabbing industry, however...all too well...

"They're running the marathon in honor of Captain Phil," Glory commented. "He ran the Cornelia Marie, but he had a stroke back during the opelio season this year and died. I think the marathon is running because they finally aired Phil's final episode."

"Ah, I see...that's thoughtful." Léan looked puzzled about something. "Erm...I hope I don't sound stupid, but what is a stroke?"

"It's when a blood vessel in your brain gets blocked, or bursts, and oxygen can't get to your brain," Glory replied. "The parts that don't get oxygen die, so even if you live, you're not really all there anymore. That's what happened to Phil, except it killed him."

Léan nodded, frowning. "I've never heard of anything like that happening to any of my kind...perhaps our body chemistries are more different than I thought..."

"Maybe," Glory replied. "Actually, I think the bursting blood vessel is an aneurysm, not a stroke. A stroke is the blocked vessel. Just about the same thing happens, though an aneurysm is more likely to be lethal." She shrugged. "I used to read a lot as a kid, so I came across things like this in my reading."

Léan tilted his head. "Hm...we don't have many health problems, as a whole. Humans are such oddly-built creatures...we do have cancer, however, just like you do."

"Come on, humans are unintelligent design at its finest," Glory said. "People who are into conspiracy theories say that we have so many diseases because nature is trying to reign us back in. Not that I blame it, though."

No, no, if you want to see unintelligent design...have you ever since Viktor's pet dog, Marston? He is...what does he call it...a bulldog? That is unintelligent design," Léan hummed, amused.

"I've seen worse than that," Glory said. Going over to her bag, she pulled out her laptop and plugged it into the internet jack in the wall. After typing for a moment, she brought up a picture of a platypus. "THIS is unintelligent design."

Léan stared at the platypus for a long moment. "...I agree, you've bested me," he admitted, scrunching his nose up. "That...thing looks it shouldn't even exist."

"Ah, but it does," Glory said. It's called a platypus. It's a mammal, but it's semi-aquatic, and it lays eggs, it's the weirdest thing ever."

Léan stared at the creature more intently. He had a funny look on his face, almost like he didn't believe her. "That is one of the strangest creatures I've ever seen. Then again, I've seen giant squids..."

"Dumbo octopus are weirder than giant squids," Glory said. "Giant squids are just big calamari."

"Cala-what?" Léan shook his head, frowning. "Never mind, never mind. I don't want to know." He closed his eyes. Of course, he was still quite worried about his father being around...

"Yeah, probably best if I don't tell you what that one is," Glory agreed. She did a few more things on her computer before she unplugged it from the internet connection. "I could open up my music player, if you want. You could see the kind of things I listen to on a regular basis. Probably a lot different than what you're used to."

"Most likely. That could be interesting," Léan mused. He vaulted himself up a little so he could surface at the top of the tank and lean over it. He would hear the music more clearly this way.

"Alright," Glory said. She pulled up her iTunes home page on her desktop and hit the shuffle button. Her taste in music was eclectic, so it would go through everything from classical to rock to country. She grinned when it started on a Lady Antebellum song, one of her favorites from the group. "Ahh... I love country music," she commented.

Léan looked puzzled at the sounds. He had heard human music, due to the time he spent on land with Selena, but it had all been techno and pop. He listened intently, recoiling at some of the odder sounds. It was strange to watch.

Glory tapped her foot in time with the music, humming along. Country music always made her feel better, no matter what was on her mind, and American Honey was a particular favorite of hers.
"I've got something like a day and a half's worth of songs in my library at the moment," she commented. "Somewhere over a thousand tracks, and I add some occasionally, when a new one comes out that I like." |
