"Well. I asked him a question, and he didn't really answer it...he instead just said it would be better to talk about it now in case something actually happens. He also gave me a talking pep-talk." Léan grumbled slightly.
"Yeah, I noticed he's really good at not giving a straight answer," Glory commented dryly. "What did you ask?"
"Erm..." Léan's slight courage faltered. "I asked about what was on my mind...well...I tried asking and failed, and he knew what I was asking anyway."
Leaning over, Glory gave him a kiss.
"Then what was on your mind earlier?" she asked. "I know something was bothering you, so you can't just say 'nothing.'" |
"Well..." Léan frowned. "...Do you have any guesses? That might make it easier for me...I know what I want to say, it's just when I try to say I want to talk about b...um...pr...um..." He sighed. "It just won't come out of my mouth."
"Now that's just not fair," Glory said, pouting a little. "Any guess I make would just be a shot in the dark."
"Perhaps not, if you think outside of the box..." Léan looked deflated--his confidence, crushed. He couldn't understand why it was so hard to talk to people he loved and trusted.
Glory cuddled into his side, offering comfort.
"This is just a wild guess," she warned, "but something about family, maybe?" |
With something concrete to start on, Léan wrapped his arms around her, shoulders drooping a bit. He seemed a tad more comfortable. "...That depends on what you mean by family," he replied, tentatively. "It sort of relates to that."
"Relates like how?" Glory asked. Before she could stop herself, she added, "your family, my family, our family, what?" When she realized what she said, she blushed a bit.
Léan cleared his throat, and then scratched his head slightly. "...I don't believe it's occurred to either of us yet, but...I forgot what the effects of, erm...being together...have underwater," he muttered, looking quite embarrassed. "On land, it's not a problem...but underwater, um...it is...and it totally slipped my mind..."
Glory's mind was clicking pieces together quickly, but she refused to let it settle on it's chosen conclusion just yet.
"Explain this to me so it makes sense," she said. |
Léan shifted uncomfortably. "On land, I become...infertile. I need water to, erm...correct that. Only natural, considering I'm a marine creature and not a land creature. So, there is no need to worry on land...underwater, however...that is a problem, and one I neglected to remember..." He looked rather ashamed of himself. "I would watch for signs. There is no way to tell early."
Yeah, that was the conclusion she had been trying not to come to.
"That's going to be a problem," she said. "Though isn't there a chance that it... didn't work?" |
"There is a chance. Which is why I'd keep an eye on things...there are signs. Not that I would know any...but Lleu does. Just...if you notice anything odd, talk to Lleu. He'll be able to confirm things. Unfortunately...there is no way to test it. It will always turn up negative with human testing methods."
Léan seemed like he felt very bad about letting it slip his mind. Then again, he'd never had to think about it before in all his life... |
Even though she was starting to get unnerved herself, Glory noticed that he seemed to be beating himself up over it. She snugged closer to him.
"I never had to think about it before, either," she pointed out softly. |
Léan closed his eyes, burying his face affectionately in the crook of her neck. He still seemed upset over it, since he hadn't meant for anything to happen so soon, if at all. But he appeared to be relieved that she didn't seem angry at all.
"...If you really are, then...you will have to find a way to hide it..." Léan informed her, quietly. "Recall that even though you are technically a human, it would have happened while you were in the form of a mermaid...and, for us...it only takes about two months...that would mean rapid growth." |
"I'll talk to Nana," Glory said. "The easiest thing would be to pull me from school, and just home-school me for the rest of the year. That is, if it comes to that."
That had Léan feeling even worse. He let out an exasperated sort of sigh. "I don't want it to come to that if it's not best for you...but...if that's what you need to do...you could have Viktor teach you," he suggested, nodding. "On weekends, and after school. He is, after all, in many advanced classes..."
"Maybe," Glory said. "We'll figure this all out if we need to." She snuggled closer to him. She hesitated a little on her next question. "What do you think about this?"
Léan shifted a bit. His back straightened just a tad, and his shoulders raised slightly. He had already openly voiced his dislike for children, and no desire to have any. He sighed, and then shrugged. "I suppose...I'm neutral. If it happens, it happens."
"But you wouldn't be happy about it," Glory said. Her own shoulders tightened a bit.
"I don't like the thought. I have a feeling I will end up hurting a small child. It's why I don't want to be so near Eden all the time..."
As Archie had mentioned before...no matter how much he denied it, deep down, Léan knew he was very much like his father. He didn't want to take the chance of his personality and way of doing things harming a child...he didn't want anyone else to suffer as he and his brother had to. |
"I have faith in you," Glory replied softly. She didn't like the idea of him not wanting any children they had. "Besides, we don't even know if we even have to worry about it yet."
Léan frowned, and then let loose a long, soft sigh. "...I am willing to try, but...I can't make any promises..." He seemed...frightened, almost. "I don't want to end up hurting anyone..."
