"I've never had any experience with ghosts, or anything supernatural," Selena countered, still looking somewhat upset. "So I reacted differently. Why is it such a big deal that I feel that way...?"
She put her head back down on the table. "Never mind. If you're just going to tell me it's my loss again and that I should have thought it over, then don't say anything..." |
"I just don't get it," Glory said finally. "Maybe it's because I grew up differently or something, but I guess I just don't understand how you don't like it." She shrugged. "Like I said, I spent all summer in the water, so I just see them as people. If anything, I'm the one out of place, not them."
Selena shrugged, lifting her head again. "I don't think I'll ever see it differently. I don't understand your point of view...I guess that's just how it is..." She glanced off into space, quietly.
"Did we just... come to an agreement about this?" Glory asked after a moment, a bit in disbelief. "Is the sky falling? Are pigs flying?"
"I hope the sky isn't falling, and pigs aren't flying. That would be weird," Selena replied simply, also in disbelief. "I guess we did..."
"That just seems wrong of a couple of levels, but we can ignore it for the moment," Glory agreed. "So... truce? In exchange for dropping the subject of the supernatural?"
"Fine...truce..." Selena picked a bit more at her food, starting to eat the spaghetti she'd gotten before it started getting cold. No use in wasting food.
"You key my car again and all bets are off," Glory teased. "I'm rather fond of that car." Absently, she practically inhaled her cookie, waiting for the bell to ring.
Selena was also practically inhaling her spaghetti. "I won't key it unless you give me good reason to..."
She paused, then stared at the ground. "Can you tell him that I'm sorry...?" she asked, sounding a little guilty. "I didn't mean to hurt him...I wasn't thinking of him as a person, because I was afraid. I was thinking of him as an animal, or a monster." |
"You can tell him yourself, if you like," Glory offered. "I'm home for about two hours between school and work, so I could give you a ride to my place after school and then drop you off back home before I head to work. You don't have to," she added quickly, "it's just a suggestion."
The suggestion seemed to scare Selena. "I...don't think he would like that," she said finally. She was sure he either hated her, was terrified of her, or grew very upset whenever she was mentioned.
"You know, when I first met him, he asked me why I wasn't scared," Glory said. "I told him that I had no reason to be scared, since I could take one step back from the shore and be on dry land where he couldn't reach me. He's definitely mellowed out lately, too, though I haven't figured out why. But I could talk to him, if you like." Glory knew she was running the risk of them getting back together, but she also knew that getting some sort of closure would be good for both of them. So why did her heart ache a bit at the thought of them being together again?
Selena shook her head slowly, finishing her spaghetti up. "I still say he wouldn't like me being there. I'd rather just have you talk to him." She was also still afraid, but she didn't mention that tidbit of information.
"Alright," Glory gave in. "I'll talk to him." Though she couldn't guarantee what Léan's reaction would be... She stood up when the bell rang, putting her chair back at the table where it belonged. "Since Viktor is gone for the day, I could give you a ride home, if you like. You'd just have to give me directions."
Selena breathed a sigh of relief, then stood up, dumping her garbage into the trash can and setting her tray on the conveyor belt, which would take it back to be washed.
"That would be nice of you, if you really don't mind..." she replied, a little awkwardly. "I can give you directions then..." |
"I don't mind," Glory replied. She grinned. "Obviously, you know which car is mine, so meet me there at dismissal. Fair warning, my car is a junker. The AC is temperamental, the front passenger-side window doesn't work, and the exhaust pipe rattles against the undercarriage when it idles."
"Better than my current state on vehicles. I don't have one," Selena retorted, amused. "I used to be stuck with my bike until Viktor offered to drive me to school. I'll meet you there..."
"Alright," Glory said.
The rest of the school day was rather boring, compared to her bizarre lunch with Selena. Who would have thought they would come to an understanding? Maybe they were more alike than they thought. Gathering her things after the final bell, Glory made her way out to her car, and wasn't surprised to see Selena already there waiting for her. "Scratch remover works miracles sometimes," she commented as she unlocked the doors. |
"If you're talking about Viktor's scratch remover, then yes, it does," Selena replied, tonelessly. "He must have gotten over a dozen scratches on his car off with it."
She slid into the passenger seat, setting her things down in the back seat. She still looked tired and downtrodden, probably about this whole ordeal with Viktor. |
"From one girl to another," Glory said as she pulled out of the parking lot, "Chocolate works wonders on a bad mood, especially foreign chocolate. My personal favorite is German, although whoever came up with Lindt is a genius."
"I like Swiss chocolate," Selena commented, offhandedly. "Lindt is really good...not that I have much in the sweets department at home. My mother is a health freak."
She didn't say anything about a father. She didn't have one. |
"Better than my mom, I guess," Glory replied. "Though Nana gets on my case about it, sometimes. She makes good food, though, so I don't complain."
"Wish I had a Nana," Selena mused, watching the passing buildings as they left the school. "All I have is my mother. No grandparents, no aunts or uncles...I do have a sister. An identical twin sister. But I've never met her. My mother gave her up at birth. She lives in England."
"I was given to my aunt when I was twelve," Glory replied. "My mom was delcared an unfit parent. I ran away three times before the judge reconsidered when I was fifteen and let me stay with Nana. I'm an only child, though." She grinned a bit. "Léan complains about his brother, and I keep telling him he's lucky to have him. Again, his brother is like a squirrel on crack, but still."
"I've seen a drugged-up squirrel before. Thanks to Animal Planet. It wasn't fun," Selena retorted, stretching a bit. "I wish I could meet my sister. But I don't have the money to, and neither does she..."
