I decided to talk about it with my brother (he plays D&D and stuff) and I agree with him. Mages being a race is just utterly ridiculous. It's not like any human in real life who is considered psychic, has a sixth sense, etc. is consider someone of an entirely different race. They are a human who has their mind tapped into enough to be able to do it. Sure, it could pass genetically, but at the same time it might not.
On the hair note (since I just randomly remembered this being mentioned), there's actually a genetics chart thing you learn in biology on how that works. There's some traits in humans and whatnot that they are not sure of, but it could be like that. Like, blonde male X blonde female can equal brunette baby if both parents have brunette in their bloodline because brunette is more dominant than blonde. I believe it was eye color that my teacher said was uncertain. Then there's some people who feel they are witches, etc. in real life who train to be this way and learn spells and whatnot. Same time there's people just born that way. Whether it is actually real or not is up to the beholder. So, it'd make more sense if human magic users trained themselves that way or were born with a little magic and then learned how to use it. I really don't think any human would be born with immense powers and automatically be able to use them at will. Thus, if untrained, I feel they'd be a preeeeeeeeetty shitty magic user. Then it'd vary on races. Since some races are more magically inclined (well, in my world). Like elves would probably be better with it than humans. It'd be more logical for the character sheets with "human/mage" (or wizard... I don't remember) to just be changed to "human". It's almost like if I filled out a character sheet and put "human/artist", since you can be born with the ability to be an artist and can be trained to do so, but can stay sucky if you never try and perfect it. If that makes sense~ |
